Nelson was disdainful of their intelligence, feeling speechless that such subordinates were following him.
“Dr. Ben, you are so naive.”
“How was I supposed to know? She acted so convincingly!”
Nelson paused slightly outside the door. Callie was a liar who didn’t even blink.
Callie’s injuries were not fatal, and with Ben’s one-on-one treatment, she healed quickly.
Nelson had instructed the servants not to let his grandfather know about these matters, so Callie had not been disturbed by anyone these days.
Ben occasionally took her to get some fresh air in the courtyard of the Paucaster Villa Complex. There was a small pond with koi fish, and in late spring and early summer, the flowers were in full bloom, filling the air with the fragrance of gardenias.
The Paucaster Villa Complex was a quiet place amidst the hustle and bustle, with the Ylosea TV station standing not far to the left.
Unknowingly, Callie had been seeing this environment for almost a year.
“Dr. Ben, why did you decide to become Nelson’s private doctor? With your skills, you could easily become a renowned doctor at any top-tier hospital and receive many accolades.”
Ben watered the flowers with a watering can. “My main job is still at the hospital. Actually, Mr. Oconnor trained me. He funded my studies abroad, which is why I am where I am today.”
“We shouldn’t be so superficial. The purpose of being a doctor is to save lives and help people.”
Ben smiled, looking at this woman. He never expected Nelson’s wife to be her.
“The day you got injured, I had just stepped into the operating room. The patient had already been anesthetized when the director suddenly came in person and insisted that I go save someone. The chief surgeon was quickly replaced, and I was taken away. At that time, I thought I was going to save some high-ranking official. I didn’t expect it to be you. Even more unexpected was that you were Nelson’s wife.”
Callie hadn’t anticipated this twist. “Would he really do that?”
Ben neither confirmed nor denied it. “Don’t underestimate your importance to him.”
Callie took a deep breath, feeling a twinge of pain from her wound. She was a bit lost. “Really… but when it came to choosing between two options, he didn’t choose me.”
The phone beside her rang. It was Regan, who sent a message: How are you? Are you okay?
It seemed that the Ellison family already knew about this major event.
Callie typed on her phone: What is the Ellison family’s attitude?
– Furious.
– Callie, don’t underestimate Marilyn’s status in the Ellison family. They have explicitly forbidden Marilyn from contacting Nelson. They don’t fear the Oconnor Group; they only care about their daughter’s safety.
Callie stared at those words for a long time. It must be nice to have family support.
She asked, What about you? How are you in the Ellison family?
After a while, Regan replied: Living under someone else’s roof, just like that.
It seemed Regan’s situation wasn’t very good.
Callie: Aren’t you and Marilyn friends?
After some time, Regan said: My relationship with her now isn’t as good as with you.
The complexities of wealthy families were hard to judge. Callie just felt it was too bleak.
Nelson had been very busy recently. After dealing with Cora’s matter, he had to handle various other issues, working for several days without rest.
The secretary observed carefully. Although Nelson seemed indifferent to Callie, there appeared to be a deep sense of guilt about him. But where did this guilt come from?
Through the rear-view mirror, the secretary saw Nelson resting his eyes in the back seat and hesitantly spoke up: “Sir, Dale and the others know you’ve arrived and want to see you.”
“No.” The reply left no room for negotiation.
The secretary fell silent.
