“Harper? Grandfather, what is Harper doing here?” Cade stood up in awe. Why was his ex-girlfriend standing in those clothes and addressing him so formally in his office?
“She would be resuming as your new assistant while Sue goes back to the general office and awaits reassignment,” Charles said.
Sue stood there; she felt rage course through her body; she could not believe that Charles got played so easily. How could he allow someone who he had removed from his grandson’s life a while back to walk in on her own two feet back into his life, and this time she was giving him access? She wanted to slap this old man across the face and attack him, but there was nothing she could do about any of it. She was bound.
Sue took a step forward and forced a smile on her face to stay professional. There was no way she was going down at all; she was going to rise to the top by all means. She did not stay loyal to the Vale family, only to be humiliated and included in their petty fight like this.
“It was a pleasure serving you, Mr. Vale. I will prepare a thorough handover note for my successor, and I will be out of your hair soon,” she said, bowing her body in a one-eighty-degree manner.
“What?” Cade said, looking around. It was happening all too fast that he could not understand what was going on. Sue began walking for the door and Cade stopped her. “Where are you going?”
“To the general office,” her voice was shaky, but she managed to suppress all of the tears she felt coming on.
“Why would you go there? You work for me.”
“I have been reassigned,” she said before walking out at once.
“Mr Charles Vale? What is this? Explain yourself at once!” Cade demanded. How did he just burst in here and ask that his assistant be changed? There were no explanations, just some riddled charges against her and they both knew that those charges held no weight. If they got investigated, there would be no link to her. Why was his grandfather giving in so easily? How could he bring Harper in here?
“Harper, let us be,” Charles signalled to her and she smiled with a small nod before leaving the office. Cade walked to the door and shut all of the blinds over all the glass walls and windows.
“Grandpa? What is this? why would you do this? None of these makes any sense.”
“You know Cade sometimes there are many things you might need to give up for the good of the greater future,” Charles said.
“Like what? I understand that they might want to use Sue to take me down and that I might need to be careful. Maybe even agrees to change her for the time being, but does it make sense to bring Harper in?” Cade asked, pacing up and down the floor space. “Do you even know who she is?”
“Harper Davis, twenty-three years of age. Five foot eight inches and one hundred and fifty-four pounds in weight,” Charles began, like he was reading off a piece of paper. Attended the same university as the great Cade Vale and dated for quite a while. Cade Vale was considering marriage with her until his grandfather made him break up with her. Harper Davis came in here with hopes of getting back with her first love, Cade but unfortunately, he was already married and now she plans to break him up from his wife and have him all to herself.”
“You know all of this and yet you still let her get so close to me?” Cade could understand. If he knew all of this, who could he easily bring her into his office knowing that she had bad intentions against him?
“Abigail and Cael think they have an insane, foolproof plan going on. If I had rejected it, they would try all the ways they know to bring you down. The only way I could have protected you was this way.”
Cade wants to ask him questions about his mom. He was curious to know if he had been the one that had caused the separation. Was this one of the things he had thought to be the right thing to do? Did he know that almost all of his decisions to do the right thing ended up wrongly?
“So do I just let her in here to find things she can conjure up to blackmail me? Do you know that she would not do her job well and would only lag me down? I agree that they want to get rid of Sue but must you agree to them planting an accomplice in my office?” Cade asked.
“With time, you would understand all of my decisions.”
Cade did not want to go on and on about the situation again. He could not believe that his grandfather had once again had the upper hand. He was meeting with his mom that evening. He wanted to hear her story before he brought it up with his grandfather, and then he would know what to do next.
Charles assured Cade that as long as he could fight to keep Harper off, he was fine. He would need to have Harper work on important things and do all of the work by himself; that way he could still keep confidential matters private, and there would be nothing that could go wrong.
“Have you ever worked as an assistant?”
“I believe anyone can learn to do anything as long as they have an objective and some will,” Harper answered. Cade looked around for the camera because she was talking like she was on a reality show.
“I will have said that you should study with one of the other assistants, but I do not have time for that. As of now I have a meeting out so get the car ready for us to go.”
“Is that all you are going to say?” She asked, standing there shocked, that he was treating her exactly like the assistants and secretaries she had seen in movies.
“Am I supposed to say anything else? Mind you, this is extremely inappropriate to ask your boss,” he said harshly. “So get going.”
“Hey babe?”
