Minutes later, Chris Shelby arrived at East Coast’s premier hospital. He went to Amy’s mother’s room where he saw Amy chatting with her mother.
“Amy, where have you just been?” her mother asked.
Amy smiled and replied, “Mom, I haven’t been anywhere.”
Sighing, the woman looked at Amy and said, “I know you’re out of money, maybe we shouldn’t stay at the hospital.”
“That’s not an option!” Amy responded anxiously.
“Mom, don’t worry about the money, I will find a way to pay for your treatment,” Amy reassured her.
“Amy, it’s all my fault,” her mother said, tears welling up in her eyes.
At that moment, Chris Shelby entered the room. “Hello, is Miss Amy here? Could you come out for a moment, I need to speak with you,” he said to Amy.
After speaking, Chris turned and left. He did not want to confront Amy in front of her mother, nor let the woman know that her daughter was a thief!
Hesitant, Amy asked, “Mom, who is that man?”
“He’s a friend of mine,” Amy replied with a smile. “I’ll be right back, I’m just stepping out for a moment.”
Outside in the hospital corridor, Chris directly addressed her. “Are you Amy?”
Looking puzzled, Amy responded, “Sir, who are you? I don’t know you!”
“Sir?” Chris’s mouth twitched.
With a smirk, Chris said, “You don’t remember me so soon? I believe you still have my property.”
Amy immediately thought of the black iron token in her pocket. Seeing Chris, she panicked.
“You’re talking nonsense! How could your things be with me?” Amy retorted.
“Still trying to lie at this point?” Chris mocked.
“I don’t understand what you’re saying. Get out! If you harass me again, believe me, I’ll call the police.”
“Call the police? Fine, let’s call the police right now!” Chris said as he took out his phone to dial.
Seeing him about to call, Amy cried, “Please, don’t call the police!”
“Oh, so you admit you stole from me?” Chris said scornfully.
“Yes, I stole your things. Please, don’t call the police. My mom is ill, and if you call, I’ll go to jail. Then no one will be there to look after her,” Amy pleaded, her head bowed.
Chris scoffed, “Then give it back now!”
Amy handed over the black token to Chris who sighed in relief upon receiving it. This token was crucial to the House of Rainstorms and the secrets of Prince Felix’s tomb-a loss would have been significant.
Chris pocketed the black token and asked, “Tell me, why did you become a thief?”
“Please, don’t tell my mom,” Amy begged, guilt written all over her face. “In her eyes, I have always been a good daughter. It would break her heart to know I’m a thief.”
“Is that so?” Chris remarked noncommittally. “You have hands and feet; you could easily find a job instead of stealing.”
Amy, on the verge of tears, said, “I dropped out before finishing middle school and can’t find a good job without any qualifications. I also need to care for my seriously ill mother and don’t have time to work.”
Hearing this, Chris Shelby softened a bit.
He was initially furious that the black token had been stolen.
On his way here, he had even considered handing Amy over to the East Coast patrol office.
Now, seeing Amy like this, Chris Shelby asked, “What about your father?”
“My father is dead!” Amy replied, kneeling before Chris Shelby and pleading, “Please spare me this time. Don’t call the police. If I go to jail, there will be no one to take care of my mom.”
“Ah,” Chris Shelby sighed, “Don’t worry, I won’t call the police on you.”
Relieved by his words, Amy relaxed a bit.
“What illness does your mother have?” Chris Shelby inquired.
“She has cancer…” Amy said, unable to hold back her tears.
Seeing this, Chris Shelby was deeply moved.
Not being a heartless man and as the ruler of the East Coast, he genuinely wanted to improve the lives of his people.
Yet, the gap between the rich and the poor was not something Chris Shelby could change alone.
All he could do was try his best to help everyone.
“Don’t worry, I will have someone cure your mother’s illness.”
“Really?” Amy looked at Chris Shelby, incredulously.
Without another word, Chris Shelby directly called Dr. McKinney, the head of East Coast’s premier hospital.
Upon learning of Chris Shelby’s arrival, Dr. McKinney immediately rushed over.
“Mr. Shelby, what brings you here?” Dr. McKinney asked, his face a portrait of fear and respect.
Since the last time Chris Shelby had a serious fight at the hospital, Dr. McKinney’s fear of Chris Shelby had deepened.
Chris Shelby pointed at Amy and declared, “I will cover all her mother’s medical expenses! Find the best doctor to treat her.”
“Yes, yes, yes!” Dr. McKinney nodded continuously.
“Uncle, you…” Amy looked at Chris Shelby, her face filled with disbelief.
Amy was no fool; even the hospital director was so reverent towards Chris Shelby.
Clearly, Chris Shelby was a significant figure.
Chris Shelby told Amy, “After your mother’s illness is cured, you must stop stealing.”
Amy nodded vigorously, “Uncle, rest assured, once my mom is better, I definitely won’t steal anymore.”
Hearing this, a smile appeared on Chris Shelby’s face.
For Chris Shelby, helping others and encouraging them toward goodness was worth much more than any amount of money.
“Uncle, when I have money, I will definitely repay you. Should I write you an IOU?”
As Amy prepared to write, Chris Shelby waved his hand, “No need. The money means little to me. As long as you stop stealing, my money is well spent.”
“Uncle…” Amy’s eyes welled up with gratitude.
Chris Shelby was determined to help to the end and prevent Amy from repeating her mistakes.
“Tomorrow, you can go to the Chester Group and find a person named Juliette. She will arrange a job for you.”
