“Jaxon, they are so beautiful,” Ruby whispered to him as they watched their daughters sleep.
It all still felt unreal to her. Just a few days ago, she still had both of them in her stomach and she had been as large as a whale. But now, she had two little humans who she called her own children.
They were both their father’s daughters. They had the same slightly tan skin as Jaxon with blond hair. They were identical with the exception of their eyes.
One had really deep blue eyes like her and the other had lighter blue eyes like Jaxon.
“They are.” He said.
“Shh, be quiet or you’ll wake Emerald up,” Ruby hissed as she glanced at the thankfully still-sleeping baby. Emerald was his mini-me, her eyes were the same shade as his and she had a knack for waking up at the slightest noise. Ruby knew it had been a nightmare to get her to go to bed the first two nights they had come home.
“Are you sure Avery won’t be the one to wake up?” He said, then pointed towards the baby who was moving a lot in her sleep.
Oh no, she had just put them to bed ten minutes ago and she wasn’t ready to do it again. Avery was sure to cry if she woke up and that would wake Emerald up as well.
She held Jaxon’s arm tightly, her fingers digging into the sleeves of his shirt as she held her breath. Sleep, sleep, she mentally willed the baby to stop moving.
Avery stopped twitching in her sleep and Ruby let out the breath she didn’t know she was holding.
“It’s a shame they’re sleeping now, I still wanted to play with them.” Jaxon let out, and everything in his expression spelled out a disappointment. Ruby swore that since she had had the girls, Jaxon hadn’t put them down for more than two hours.
He was always taking them in his arms and talking to them like they understood what he was saying, and he swore they did too. He was smitten with them. She smiled thinking how the girls had him wrapped around their pinky fingers and they weren’t even a month old yet.
She couldn’t wait for them to start walking and talking, that’s when the real fun would begin.
“Come on, let’s stop watching them like creeps and leave them alone.”
“But-”
“No buts, you’ll see them again when they wake up. They are not going to just up and disappear Jaxon.” She whispered fiercely as she pushed him out of the nursery.
Aside from being with her, Jaxon had practically lived in the nursery during the day. She guessed the feeling of having little ones to care for was just as unreal to him as it was to her and he had to look at them constantly to put his mind at ease.
A few hours passed and the girls had long woken up. Ophelia had come to visit and had the squirming Emerald in her hands. She cooed at Emerald for a while but that only lasted a really short while before Emerald started crying to get fed.
Ruby did that, still getting used to the feeling of a baby latching on her breast. It took on a whole other level when she still had to get used to breastfeeding both girls at the same time.
She finished nursing Emerald and Ophelia practically snatched the baby out of her arms.
“You have to burp her,” she called out and Ophelia gently took the baby on her shoulder.
“I know that.” Ophelia rolled her eyes as she started burping the baby.
“I was just saying.”
“Well just so you know, I took childbirth classes both pre and post to prepare.” Ophelia declared proudly and Ruby’s brows shot up her forehead.
“Really? But you weren’t the one pregnant,”
“Hush now, if one of us is pregnant, we both are. Can’t you see I’m practically their second mother? I’m sure they love me so much.” Ophelia let out, a wide smile gracing her lips. It was Ruby’s turn to roll her own eyes.
“Well you better be careful their mother Ophelia or the baby will throw up in you.” Jaxon shot a comment from across the room earning a fit of giggles from Ruby.
And as if to prove Jaxon right, Emerald did throw up on her much to Jaxon’s satisfaction.
“That’s my girl.” Jaxon let out and Ruby shook her head.
She looked down at Avery who was staring up at her with wide ocean eyes.
“You won’t throw up on me, will you Avery” She whispered the question to the baby who blinked up at her.
Jaxon took Emerald away from Ophelia who was still pissed at him. She rushed up the stairs to change her shirt just as the doorbell chimed.
Jaxon answered and the whole family stepped through, both blood and acquired.
Keith, Nana, and Damon stepped through holding a battalion of gifts in their hands.
“Where are my grandbabies?” Keith’s sharp voice rang out and the girls squirmed in protest.
“Not so loud Grandpa, they don’t like that.” Jaxon let out before handing Emerald to him.
Nana rushed over to her and took Avery in her arms and began cooing at her.
“Oh, she’s so beautiful, Keith, look at her. Look at them! They’re just dolls.” Nana said, her lips drawn in a wide smile.
Damon congratulated Ruby with a smile and a gift before giving Jaxon a manly clap on the back.
“How does it feel to be a dad, a girl dad at that?” Damon asked, wiggling his eyebrows as he did so.
Jaxon simply glanced at the girls in Keith’s and Nana’s hands and smiled.
“Amazing.”
“Woah, who knew being a dad would make you go soft,” Damon commented.
Ophelia had stepped into the room again and everyone was chatting happily and congratulating her and Jaxon.
“Ruby, I’m letting you know simply because you’re the girls’s mother, but I’m taking them with me and they are going to stay with me for a year.” Keith suddenly declared looking very serious and everyone laughed.
Her cheeks hurt from smiling so much and Ruby thought of how her life had changed by just signing a contract.
