Everything was a mess. Jaxon’s phone kept buzzing with notifications and calls and he knew
there was no turning back now. He had to take care of everything and face the problem head-on.
The news was everywhere and people wanted an explanation. The media was going crazy and
In such a short period it became a hot trending topic.
Ruby was anxious, she didn’t want him to leave the house. She didn’t want him to get swamped
by reporters. If it was possible she wanted him to remain at home till everything died down but
she doubted if that would change anything.
“It’s going to be fine Gem, I just need to go to the office and speak with the PR department to
know our next line of action. I’ll also need to speak to my lawyers and do something about your sister because she is getting out of hand.” Jaxon angrily said as he came out of the walk-in closet all dressed up for work.
He could find her and kill her, but he knew Ruby still loved her stupid sister. So he would keep her behind bars for life. He could care less if she was pregnant.
“I’m just scared. What if you get swamped on your way in and end up getting hurt? Can’t you just do all that from home…” Ruby held his arm tightly as she looked up into his eyes.
Her eyebrows were creased in worry; her demeanor showed how tired she was, and Jaxon smiled as he cupped her cheeks.
“Nothing is going to happen to me Gem, I’m already used to dealing with the media and public
by now, it will all be fine. I need to go.” Ruby’s shoulders slumped in resignation.
“Fine! But please take very good care of yourself.” Jaxon leaned down and placed a sweet peck on her lips.
“I will. Bye.” Ruby watched sadly as Jaxon walked out of the room and a few moments later she
heard the car drive off.
Her brow furrowed with worry as she paced back and forth, her mind whirling with concern for
Jaxon.
She had fate in his capabilities to take care of it all but she was still worried.
She knew how the business world worked and she was worried that his company would lose investors and projects because of the issue at hand now.
Ruby wished she could assist him in one way or the other but what did she know? She felt useless. She felt like everything that was happening was her fault and she couldn’t even lend him a helping hand.
She was brought out of her thoughts by the shirt sound of her phone ringing. She stretched her hand, picked it off the drawer, and answered without checking the caller ID.
“Tell me it’s not true.” Ruby winced at the loud voice.
“It’s not true, right?” Ophelia groaned from the other end. She was angry and disappointed at Ruby.
She thought she knew her so well only to find out that she sold herself to Jaxon for money. She had always suspected how they met. Who knew Ruby still lied to her after the time had an argument?
Ophelia was not in the mood for games, she just wanted to hear the whole thing from Ruby’s mouth.
“How could you! I thought we were best friends! How could you keep such a big thing from me?
Is it even true? I had to find out from the news… the news!” Ophelia angrily chastised. Her voice
was razor-sharp, each word a dagger of accusation as she confronted Ruby.
Ruby had seen that coming, and she wanted to avoid it for as long as possible, but she had already answered the phone.
“Yes, it’s true, and I’m sorry you had to find out like that, but honestly speaking, no one was supposed to know.” Ruby softly said.
“How? Why? Why did you do that? Why did you even agree to it? This whole thing is insane!”
Ophelia couldn’t believe that Ruby could do such a thing. The whole thing was unbelievable to her and she wanted an explanation.
“Just calm down, I’ll tell you everything okay.” Ruby softly said.
“I can’t calm down! I need answers. You have to tell me everything without skipping a single
detail. That’s if you don’t lie again.” Ophelia was impatient. She was filled with curiosity, she just wanted to know how everything started and how they got to where they were today. The whole truth.
“Fine! Remember when Kim was still in the hospital and I was working multiple jobs, trying to
save enough money for her operation and treatments… I was swimming in debt and it felt like everything was against me. I was desperate, I wanted to save my sister, I wanted her to be
healthy, pay off my debts, and live a simple life like everyone else but everyday things kept getting worse and worse, until I stumbled upon Jaxon.”
“Stumbled? How can one stumble upon a billionaire?” Ophelia asked.
“I guess fate thought that I had suffered enough and it decided to favor me. The day I encountered him was one of the worst days of my life, I had received a call from the hospital saying that they would stop Kimberly’s treatment since I couldn’t complete the money and I’ve met a bunch of problematic customers at my workplace.
Jaxon was one of such customers and I overheard him speaking on the phone. He was angrily yelling because his contracted wife had backed off at the
last minute. I didn’t know what came over me but I approached him and offered to marry him in
exchange for money to treat Kimberly.
So we got married and he only looked for me when he had important events and such. That was
how everything started.”
“Wow! So you never won the lottery.” Ophelia felt speechless, she knew Ruby was having a hard time when Kimberly was in the hospital but she didn’t know it was so bad. She felt sad.
“I’m so disappointed in you Ruby. Why didn’t you tell me you were having such a difficult time?”
“I know that I don’t have much but I would have helped you with the little I had!” Ruby softly smiled.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I’m sorry you had to find out about the contract from the news but it’s
Fine, Jaxon will take care of it.” Ruby didn’t know if the last part was meant for Ophelia or herself.
“Is the contract still valid? Does that mean that your whole marriage is a sham and you are not in love?” Ophelia asked.
“The contract has expired and our marriage is real. It was a contract at first but we have grown to love each other. What we have going on is as real as it gets.”
“I’m glad. Please take care of yourself and stay indoors, I’ll try and visit you soon.” Ophelia
sweetly said and Ruby smiled.
“I will and you too,” Ruby replied.
“Stay away from social media, the comments are not encouraging. Stay safe and Happy.”
Ophelia ended the call and Ruby’s curiosity was piqued. She knew the contract and Jaxon would be trending online but she didn’t check.
She hurriedly entered X and typed Jaxon Vaughn in the search bar.
So many posts popped up and she opened one that a popular blogger posted. It was a picture of Jaxon and Ruby along with the contract. She entered the comment section and her eyes widened.
“Is he so unloved that he had to pay to get himself a partner? I feel so stupid for ever seeing him as my role model.”
“So all this while I’ve been stanning him and his whore?”
“Guess it’s true that he is gay cause why would a man as sexy as himself engage in a contract
marriage?”
“I’m sure he did it to cover up the fact that he is a fucking faggot!”
The comments were awful! Ruby couldn’t take it anymore and dropped the phone beside her.
She slumped on the bed and sighed. After reading the comments she felt even more worried for Jaxon. She just hoped he would be fine.
