The weather was lovely today. Clear skies, warm sun, and mild traffic. It was the perfect day for spending time out in the sun and doing outdoor activities.
Too bad Kim was in a sour mood and the last thing on her mind was anything fun. It irritated her that even the weather seemed to be in a happier mood than she was.
It had been two weeks since Ruby fell down the stairs and broke her leg, and then, she had thought everything was going in her favor.
They weren’t. In all the time that passed, her plans had been futile and no matter how hard she tried to get the ball rolling, it remained where it was.
She had never known frustration like this existed. But these weeks had taught her it did, along with some virtues.
Kim had not thought that patience was a word that would ever be associated with her but she had continued to surprise herself.
She had patiently tried to get closer to Jaxon but no matter what she did, it would not happen. The whole reason why she had planned the accident in the first place was to put a gap between him and Ruby.
But somehow, she had managed to pull them closer and that frustrated her to no end. It was like they were joined at the hip. Anywhere Ruby was, be sure that Jaxon was there as well, hovering over her like a nursemaid.
Jaxon was always around her and he helped and doted on her constantly. It made it extremely difficult for Kim to find some alone time with him, so seducing him had been out of the question.
Kim had wracked her brain for a solution to the problem but she’d been coming up short. She had already done the extreme by causing the accident so what more could she do to tear them apart?
She shook herself out of her thoughts, glanced at the clock, and sighed. She had spent over thirty minutes thinking and her breakfast had gone cold.
No one was there with her, so thankfully, she wouldn’t have to explain why her mind was somewhere else.
She pushed the cold bacon and eggs around her plate and then abandoned it. Instead, she took a cup of tea and started the slow process of drinking it when she heard the loud thud of footsteps.
She looked in the direction of the door and the tall frame of Jaxon came into view. Kim nearly jumped at the sight of him.
She hadn’t expected to see him at all, she had even thought it was Ruslan or someone else she’d heard.
Her eyes roamed over him shamelessly as she took in his suit-clad body. He looked ready to head for the office and Kim thought it made sense since he hadn’t been to work since Ruby had had her accident and had spent all that time taking care of Ruby.
Those first few days, she had felt so jealous of Ruby because how was it possible she had gotten one of the country’s top businessmen to stop working for her?
Ruby wasn’t even all that so what was so special about her anyway?
Kim stared at Jaxon longer than she should have then sighed. This was her chance! And it was the first time in two weeks she had got to be remotely close to him with no one interrupting. Kim knew this was her chance to revive her dying plan.
“Are you heading to work today?” She immediately thought her question was foolish. Where else would he be heading to dressed like that?
She face palmed internally but nothing showed on her face.
There was silence in the room after she asked her question and she thought he wasn’t going to answer and ignore her as before. She had started to turn away from him when he spoke.
“I am,” Jaxon said flatly and she almost jumped with joy. It wasn’t the response she had hoped for, but at least that was something; he had said something to her.
“How’s Ruby feeling?” She asked again. It happened that she was trying to keep him from leaving as soon as possible.
“Why don’t you ask her?” He asked instead. Okay, she was not prepared for him to ask her a question instead. Although the way he put it, she could hear his underlying tone and it didn’t sound happy.
“I don’t want to disturb her.” She told him and she watched as he glanced at her.
“She’s fine.” He told her then went back to whatever he was doing. She saw him fixing up his suit, and with newfound courage, she rose from her seat and approached him. She walked to him and then stopped a few steps in front of him.
“Let me help you with that.” She told him then gestured to the undone tie around his neck.
She moved closer and stretched her hands forward. But before she could do anything, Jaxon had stepped a good few footsteps from her as if she had burned him.
“I just want to help,” she whispered in a breathy voice. Kim tried to move closer with discrete steps, but Jaxon took another mere step back, widening the space between them. She stopped pushing and let a smile grace her lips.
“Okay since you don’t need help, why don’t you tell me how you’re doing? It must not be easy taking care of Ruby.” Her hands were behind her back and her fingers were crossed for good luck so that he would answer.
“I don’t see how that’s your business.” He replied bluntly. Kim didn’t get discouraged, instead, she said,
“Oh, but it is. I do care about you Jaxon.” She told him shamelessly. She tried to get close to him again but Jaxon had had enough.
“Don’t touch me.” He said in a low voice that stopped Kim in her tracks. Jaxon regarded with a hard expression and then said,
“I know you’re the one who caused Ruby’s accident but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to hurt Ruby. Stay far away from me from now on or the next time, I won’t hesitate to throw you out.” Jaxon voiced. He didn’t bother to wait for an answer and just left for work.
