Ruby was scared.
She felt like her whole senses were shivering in fright as Jaxon drove them to the hotel. She couldn’t sit still, she kept tapping her feet on the floor and Jaxon worriedly glanced at her from time to time.
“They are safe now Gem, you don’t need to worry so much,” Jaxon said softly. Ruby sighed and turned to face him. She looked like she had just seen a scary movie and Jaxon almost cursed out loud.
He grabbed her hand and brought it to his lips, he placed a soft kiss and rested their intertwined hands on his laps while he drove.
Ruby nodded and took a deep breath to calm herself.
Jaxon parked in the hotel’s parking lot and turned to Ruby. He leaned forward and unbuckled her seat belt.
“I won’t be going in with you ’cause I know you’ll want to have some alone time with them. But! I don’t want you to cry when you get there, they are both fine and safe, nothing happened so don’t get too worked up. Okay?” Jaxon cupped Ruby’s cheeks and stared directly into her eyes as he spoke.
Ruby smiled softly and nodded.
“Inform them that they both don’t have to worry about accommodation, I’ve prepared an apartment for them and the driver will be coming to pick them up once you’re done.”
Ruby felt happy, she didn’t know what she would have done if she didn’t have Jaxon. He always has a way of diving all her problems in a blink of an eye. She loved moments like this when Jaxon knew exactly what to do and say to make things better.
Ruby wrapped her arms around his neck and gently pulled him closer. Their lips connected and they softly started kissing, the kisses deepened as their tongues intertwined in a sweet dance.
Jaxon pulled away and Ruby almost whined at the loss of warmth. He placed a lingering peck on her lips and sat back in the driver’s seat.
“Go and meet your sister Gem. I’ll be right here waiting for you.” Jaxon winked.
Ruby glared at him as she opened the door and walked into the hotel. She got their room number from the receptionist and made her way to the room with her heart beating loudly in her chest.
She hoped both Kim and Ophelia were okay because she would never forgive herself if something happened to either of them because of her.
She knocked on the brown wooden door and Ophelia opened the door. Ruby looked at her from head to toe and she breathed out a sigh of relief and pulled Ophelia into a hug.
“I’m so glad you were not hurt,” Ruby whispered and Ophelia giggled as she pulled away from the hug.
“I’m fine and it’s all thanks to you and your husband’s men. I have never seen anything like that before.” Ruby’s smile dropped. She felt bad that they had to go through that because of her.
“I’m so sorry you had to go through that because of me.”
“It’s not your fault, it was bound to happen one of these days. Come in.” Ophelia said softly and led her into the room.
The storm of anxiety raging in Ruby’s mind dissipated as she saw Kim seated comfortably on the bed. Ruby smiled as she rushed to her and pulled her into a hug.
“I’m glad you are okay.” Kim felt like rolling her eyes as Ruby tightened her hold around her.
“And who says I’m okay?” Kim asked softly. Ruby pulled away from the hug and held her hand.
“Are you hurt? Do I need to get the doctor?” Ruby asked worriedly as she started scanning her whole body with her eyes.
“It would have been better if they were physical wounds…” Her face looked pale as she stared off into space as though she was reminiscing the whole ordeal.
“I’m so sorry you had to go through that. But you don’t have to worry about going back to that house and getting swamped again. Jaxon has arranged a new apartment for you guys and he even assigned a guard for you in case something happens… you’re going to be safe there.” Ruby felt sad as she softly tapped her head.
“No! No!” Kim screamed as her breath started coming out in short pants. Ruby didn’t know what to do as she held her hands.
“Kim… breathe!” Ruby softly shook her.
Ophelia sat beside her and softly ran her hand on her back in a soothing way.
“Don’t tell me that! All this is your fault. It was your identity that put me in danger in the first place and now you just want to push me aside?” Kim accused and Ruby felt heartbroken.
“Why would I do that? Jaxon has made all the necessary arrangements to make sure that what happened today doesn’t repeat itself, so you are safe now.” Ruby softly said.
“I’m scared okay! I can’t live alone… I don’t feel safe.” Kim started to shed tears.
“But you won’t be alone Kim, Ophelia will be there.” Ruby spoke in a soothing voice as if she was trying to pacify a child.
“I don’t want that. I want to stay with you!” Ruby’s eyes widened as she stared at Kimberly.
“With me? Why? What difference does it make?” Kimberly started sobbing loudly and Ruby didn’t know what to do. She looked at Ophelia and looked at her pitifully.
“Ruby is right Kim what difference does it make? We have been staying together for a while now so why the sudden need for change?” Ophelia asked.
“I knew it, you don’t care about me or my well-being! all you care about is yourself!” Kim angrily shouted as she wiped her tears.
“How could you say that of course I care about you but I’m a married woman now Kim, you can’t just waltz into my house when my husband has already gotten an apartment for you.” Ruby thought Kim was being unreasonable.
“I’m no longer safe because of you and you can’t even accommodate me for a few days? Wow! What an amazing sister I have.” Kimberly said sarcastically.
“You are being very unreasonable right now Kim,” Ophelia said.
“You stay out of it!” Kim glared at Ophelia.
“I care about you Kim and you know that but you have to understand…” Kimberly cut her off.
“No, you are just making excuses to run away from your responsibilities Ruby. You are the one being a very inconsiderate and bad sister right now.” Kimberly deadpanned.
