Ruby felt anxious as she lay down on the bed. Jaxon was taking a shower and she was left alone with her thoughts. She kept looking at her phone expecting a reply from Kim but there was still nothing from her side.
Ruby started to feel worried. Her heart started beating faster and she could feel the anxiety increasing. Her stomach started to form tight knots, she didn’t want to be negative but she felt like something was wrong with Kim.
She hurriedly opened her phone and dialed Kimberly’s number, the phone rang and Ruby felt like her heart would beat out of her chest as the phone kept ringing.
Her thoughts are a whirlwind of the worst-case scenarios, her imagination running wild with images of doom and disaster. She closed her eyes to clear her mind.
She dialed the number again and her chest tightened with a sense of foreboding, her heart beating erratically like a trapped bird fluttering against the cage of her ribcage.
She anxiously bit her nails and just as she was about to give up she heard Kim’s voice from the other end.
“Hello.” Ruby felt her tensed shoulders sag as relief washed over her. She felt like she could finally breathe properly and the tight knots in her stomach slowly unraveled.
“Where have you been!?” Ruby exclaimed.
Kimberly rolled her eyes in annoyance. She initially didn’t want to pick the call but she knew Ruby would keep calling or even come over if she didn’t pick.
” I went to take a shower.” Ruby sighed in relief, she felt like a heavy burden had been lifted off her shoulders.
“I’m glad you’re okay. I was so worried when you didn’t reply to my message and when you didn’t pick up my call I started to get all these negative thoughts… I was so scared.” Ruby said sadly.
“Oh please. Do you think I’ll harm myself over a man? I’m much more than that.” Kimberly joked and Ruby chuckled.
“I’m glad you sound good but are you okay? Do you need me to come to sleep over?” Ruby was still worried, she wanted to make sure that Kim was perfectly okay and capable of taking care of herself.
“I’m good. You don’t have to inconvenience yourself over such a small issue Ruby. I feel like I’m over it already.” Kimberly said.
“Are you sure you’re not saying this just to make me feel better?” Ruby asked.
“No. It’s just a breakup Ruby, I’m over it already. I’m done moping around for a man who doesn’t care about me.” Ruby felt like it was sudden after seeing Kim in such a bad condition earlier but she felt happy. As long as Kim is not hurting anymore she is fine.
“I’m so happy to hear that and I’m sure you will find someone better than Damon. It’s his loss.” Kimberly laughed and Ruby felt happy that she was finally okay.
“Damon who? I’ve long forgotten that someone like that was ever in my life. I’m ready to move on to the next phase of my life.” Ruby could hear the laughter in Kim’s voice as she said this.
“That’s good. I’m glad you’re okay. Don’t hesitate to call me if you need anything… I’ll always be here for you.”
“I know,” Kimberly replied.
“You’ve had a stressful day, let me allow you to rest and get your beauty sleep. Goodnight.” Ruby said with a huge smile on her face.
“Goodnight Ruby,” Kimberly replied and hung up the phone.
Ruby felt giddy as she dropped the phone and her whole was glowing as she smiled happily. Jaxon came out of the bathroom with a bathrobe and walked towards the bed. Ruby’s eyes sparkled as he sat down at the edge of the bed.
Jaxon smiled and placed a light peck on her lips.
“I can see you’re feeling much better now Gem.” Ruby smiled as she played with his fingers.
“I just spoke to Kim and she is feeling so much better now. I feel so relieved!” Ruby said excitedly.
“I’m glad you are feeling better Gem but you seriously need to stop getting so worked up whenever something happens to Kimberly. She is a grown woman now and she is capable of facing the consequences of her actions. You can’t keep coddling her like a child.” Ruby’s eyes widened as she stared at Jaxon.
“I can’t help myself, I can’t stop myself from getting worried whenever she is troubled. That is why I am the older sister, I have to protect her no matter what.” Jaxon groaned as he ran his hand through his damp hair.
“I never said you can’t protect her, Ruby but you need to stop worrying so much about her. Allow her to fight some of her battles herself.” Jaxon said.
“I can’t do that babe, she is all that I have. She is the only family I have left. If I don’t take care of her then who will? If I don’t look after her then who will? She is my responsibility, I have to protect her no matter what.” Jaxon sighed and stood up from the bed.
Ruby watched him walk away and didn’t know how to feel.
He went into the closet and came out a few minutes later in his pajama pants. Jaxon climbed the bed and pulled Ruby into his arms. He started to place kisses all over her face and Ruby giggled in his arms.
They both smiled as they slowly leaned forward and kissed. It was a soft and tender kiss, there was no atom of lust or hurry.
They pulled away from the kiss with smiles on their faces and Ruby sighed happily as she snuggled up to Jaxon and buried her face in his chest.
Jaxon smiled as he softly played with her hair and before long her body went limp in his arms. He felt content as he also closed his eyes and went to sleep with the love of his life held safely in his arms.
