Ruby knew it, she always had. The fact that June didn’t bother to hide that she was pining after Jaxon like he was the only man in the world irritated her. And now, here she was at the party playing a mini hostess which made her angrier than she already was.
“You know, you really have no shame going after a married man like that.” Ruby fired at June after they stepped aside to “talk”.
“Oh, so you want me to give you a trophy because you’re married to him?” June scoffed in question. Her eyes traveled down Ruby’s body and she snared.
“You’re not anything special because you are married to Jaxon.” June spat out after she had finished sizing her up. Ruby couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Blood rushed to her ears as she stared at June in pure fury.
Ruby knew where she came from and she knew that Jaxon was over a million times richer than her, but Ruby always prided herself that she was humble and had a strong sense of self and she would be damned if she let some insecure woman take it away from her all because she didn’t get the man.
“I’m nothing special, let me guess, and you think you are? Because?” Ruby left the question hanging as she regarded June with hyper-focused eyes. She watched as June’s face went beet red and saw her eyes shift from surprise to raw anger.
“How dare you?!”
“How dare I? I’m not the one who’s embarrassing herself by going after a man who didn’t choose her.” I told her. Ruby noticed the way June’s jaw subtly clenched. It was so small a movement that if she hadn’t been looking closely, she would have missed it.
“If I were you, I’d be ashamed of myself,” Ruby added after a moment. She thought June looked about ready to explode with the way she was breathing heavily. The glare she gave Ruby was so fierce that if looks could kill, she would probably be dead by now.
“What, nothing to say for yourself?” Ruby taunted as she donned a faint smile. This was the first time she had gotten June speechless. The last time they had met, she had promised herself that she wouldn’t let June walk all over her or make her feel inferior.
Anytime June came up about how she and Jaxon’s social classes were miles apart, she always felt down and would think she would never be good enough for him. The truth is, she didn’t want to feel that way anymore.
“Oh I am so going to deal with you Ruby, and when I’m done with you, you’ll wish you had never crossed me.” June threatened in a voice so quiet it sent chills down her spine. June, who was still as angry as before, walked away without so much as a second glance in her direction.
Ruby watched her go and felt triumphant at finally putting June in her place. Her mind then flashed to the threat June had given her not even ten minutes prior. But the next moment, she shook it off. What could June really do anyway? She could see June playing the victim in certain situations, especially when she paired it with her fake innocent look.
She didn’t think June would do anything illegal because that would seriously affect her, she could go to jail for a crime. Her company would also be affected by her unruly reputation.
Ruby didn’t know why all these things had come to mind. But she took her mind off it and went to find Jaxon. He was fairly easy to find because he was one of the tallest in the room and his head looked a few inches higher than everyone else’s.
She walked over to him and met him talking with Damon. When he noticed her, she went and stood at his side as soon as his eyes pinned her. Jaxon and Damon continued conversing and she was forced to entertain herself by people watching.
She stood there for another ten minutes before deciding she really wanted to use the bathroom and left Jaxon’s side. She found the bathroom and went in to do her business, but on being done she tried leaving the bathroom and found it locked. She tried again and it was still the same.
She turned back to the bathroom stalls and found no one. She was alone here so she couldn’t think of how the door locked her in. Or had the door jammed when she had closed it? She tried pounding on the door but nothing happened.
The bathroom was a good distance from the main hall so it would mean that the hall was dead silent if anyone heard. Or by some miracle, someone was passing by.
Ruby was worried but it hadn’t transformed into full-blown panicking. At least not yet. She thought of the speech she was meant to give and how the time was drawing closer.
That was when a lightbulb went off and she decided to call Jaxon. She had her fingers crossed in hope as waited and listened to the phone ring. It rang some more before going to voicemail. She tried a second time but this time around, it didn’t even ring.
Frustration set in when she realized she didn’t have any service and that no matter how many times she called, it never went through. She called Damon a few times as well but it was the same thing with him as well. His phone couldn’t be reached even though he was in the same building as her.
Full-blown panic had set in because she didn’t know how she would get out. She had called people and there was no service, she had pounded the door and no one had come.
She might just have to settle down and wait for someone to unlock the door, she thought grimly.
One of the major reasons and why she wanted to leave as soon as possible was the fact that the time for the toast was close. Jaxon’s grandfather had specially asked her if she would give one and she had agreed. Now here she was stuck in a bathroom with no idea of when she would get out.
