It was nighttime and Ruby was sleeping soundly in Jaxon’s arms as he played with her hair.
She looked so peaceful cuddled up in his arms and he smiled as he tightened his arm around her.
His phone started vibrating and he ignored the call. It started up and again and he groaned in annoyance as he untangled himself from Ruby and moved to the edge of the bed.
He picked up the phone and Damon’s name was flashing on the screen.
“Don’t you sleep?” Jaxon grumpily said and Damon laughed from the other side.
“I do but you don’t deserve to sleep while I’m still awake” Damon replied nonchalantly
“What do you want?” Jaxon groaned.
“If you want to know what I want then ask sweetly and drop the attitude.” Damon replied and Jaxon instantly regretted answering the call.
“If you want someone to listen to your bickering, then go get yourself a partner. It’s not that hard, just clean up, change half of your wardrobe and you’re good to go.” Jaxon smirked
“You did not just insult my choice of clothing. How dare you!” Damon felt genuinely offended and Jaxon laughed heartily.
“How dare you call a married man at night?” The other side went quiet and Jaxon almost dropped the phone thinking he hung up when Damon started speaking again.
“Since when did you care about being a married man? Aren’t you married only on paper?”Damon asked accusingly and Jaxon pinched the bridge of his nose.
“It’s none of your business. Focus on your nonexistent love life.” Jaxon taunted and Damon groaned.
“At least I have a chance to leisurely pick my partner.” Damon shot back
“Too bad all the prospective ladies are running away from you.” Jaxon replied.
“You are the absolute worst. How did I even become friends with you? You are rude, snobbish, cranky and annoying. I seriously don’t see the appeal.” Damon groaned
“Says the narcissist.” Jaxon shot back.
“Fuck you!” Damon exclaimed and Jaxon laughed at the insult.
“Stop looking for a fight and tell me why you called.”
“I was about to before your rude ass refused to greet me or ask about my well being.” Jaxon rolled his eyes.
“Can you please focus and get straight to the point.” Jaxon said seriously and Damon immediately composed.
“I’ve got news on Serena.” Jaxon’s ears perked up and he straightened up.
“What about her? What happened? Where is she?” Jaxon asked and Damon sighed.
“She is dead. She committed suicide.” Jaxon felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured on him.
“That can’t be right. Are you sure it was suicide?” Jaxon asked.
“Yes. I confirmed it and even checked the hospital and police records. Damon replied.
Serena and suicide? It didn’t make sense to Jaxon. He knew this lady. She was way too materialistic and full of life to commit suicide. Plus the timing seems suspicious to him.
“Something feels fishy Damon. I don’t think it was suicide.” Jaxon ran his hand through his hair.
“What?” Damon whispered.
“It feels wrong and the whole thing doesn’t add up. Why would she commit suicide? She had no reason to, everything was working out for her till she ran away of course. But why commit suicide now?”
“Are you saying what I think you are saying?” Damon didn’t know how to feel, he was confused and also shocked at the revelation.
“Yes. It is exactly what you are thinking. I need you to find out everything that happened. From the moment I proposed marriage to her down to the moment of her death. Do not make any mistakes and be as discreet as possible.” Jaxon said coldly.
“I understand. I’ll try my best to get the whole truth.” Damon replied.
“Be cautious and handle this with care please.” Jaxon warned.
“I understand boss.” Damon replied sarcastically.
“So when are you coming back?” Damon asked and Jaxon groaned as the playful Damon was back.
“Whenever I feel like coming back. Do you miss me?” Jaxon smirked.
“Ewww… in your dreams.” Damon made a fake gagging sound and Jaxon shook his head at his antics.
“You know your grandfather’s birthday is coming up right?” Damon asked.
“Of course.” Jaxon replied
“I hope you are not planning on missing the party?” Jaxon laughed at the displeasure and accusation in Damon’s voice.
“If I have to,” Jaxon replied in a stern voice. Not that he was not happy celebrating the birthday, but the old man loved going big and would invite the whole world.
That was what he didn’t like. A small family party was okay.
“Seriously jerk.”
“If you are done tormenting me. You can kindly hang up now.” Jaxon groaned.
“Not so fast, mister, you need to come back soon and deal with your workload. It’s getting suffocating. I seriously don’t get paid enough for this!” Damon whined and Jaxon rolled his eyes at how dramatic he was being.
“I’m doing 60% of the work from here so what exactly is suffocating you? Plus you get paid more than enough for the little job you do.” Damon’s eyes widened.
“You did not just call my job little. Have you forgotten the number of assistants you fired before you got me?” Damon angrily asked.
“Well, all you do is whine and play on your phone. Sometimes I wonder how you are assisting me.” Jaxon smiled widely.
“Say that one more time and I will quit!” Jaxon was satisfied by his friend’s reaction. He wanted to get back at him for taunting him earlier and he felt proud of himself.
“As if you would get another job that pays that well.” Jaxon smirked
“I hate you.” Damon shouted and Jaxon smirked as he hung up the call.
He dropped the phone by the bedside drawer and lay back down on the bed. He pulled Ruby close to him and she instantly hugged him like a koala.
He smiled as he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
