Chapter 23
Jaxon carefully dropped Ruby on the bed as he checked her pulse yet again. She was burning.
He held this frustrated look on his face as he had no idea about what to do in the situation that he was in.
He had not really taken care of anyone in his life, he was an only child, with no siblings.
He didn’t even know what was wrong with her or why she was burning. The only reasonable logic he could come up with as an educated person was that she might be having a fever.
But yet, how would he know how to deal with fever patients?
“Ruby..” he shook her body gently as her eyes fluttered.
“Ruby!” He called, she was awake.
“Ruby, come on open your eyes” He tapped get face gently, trying to wake her up.
“Are you okay?” He questioned, knowing that was a very stupid question to ask.
She did not look fine.
“My head hurts,” Ruby replied, her voice very low.
She suddenly felt weak on their way and she couldn’t even move her limb.
Jaxon’s face paled as he saw Ruby’s condition.
It was more than just a headache, that was for sure. What if she died?
He knew next to nothing about medicine or first aid.
“Ruby, I need you to tell me what’s going on, where exactly does it hurt?” Jaxon asked.
Ruby’s face was flushed, and she was shivering.
“I think I have a fever” Ruby replied as she suddenly began to feel cold.
“Damn it!” Jaxon cursed standing up on his feet.
“You better don’t die here. I’ll be back..” he informed pointing at her as he made his way out of the room.
The moment he locked the door behind him, he brought out his phone and he called Damon.
“Hey, man what’s up!” Damon asked, picking up the call almost immediately.
“Hey, um…” Jaxon drew out, caressing his temples.
“How do you deal with a fever patient?” He questioned, curiously. His voice was low.
“You call a doctor,” Damon replied in a mischievous voice.
“Shut up and tell me!!” He snapped at him. Damon had sisters, so there was a chance he had an idea about it.
“It’s quite simple,” Damon grinned from the other side of the phone.
“Then tell me!” Jaxon requested.
“It’s easy. The person should stay hydrated and if her body temperature is high, apply a cool damp cloth on her forehead, help her with a cold bath, hot soup and lastly cuddle her to sleep.” Damon explained, grinning from ear to ear.
“I never said there was a woman,” Jaxon hissed.
“Then who are you doing this for if not a wom,..”
“Shut up!” Jaxon interrupted as he ended the call.
He went back into the room to see Ruby curled up in the bed.
“This is definitely gonna be so hard..” He muttered to himself as he left the room, returning a few minutes later with a first aid kit, a bowl of water, and a cloth.
Doing exactly what Damon said, he placed the wet cloth on her forehead as he proceeded to dress the wound on her foot.
He inhaled, opening the first aid kit, where was he going to start from?
He brought out his phone and browsed on how to dress a wound.
As Jaxon looked at the myriad of gauze pads, cotton, and medical tape, he felt overwhelmed.
After reading the instructions carefully, he proceeded to clean the wound, keeping a straight face as he saw the angry red gash.
He gently dabbed at it with a cotton swab, applying antiseptic to prevent infection.
Ruby let out a pained groan as he stared at her briefly before looking away, to focus on what he was doing.
Jaxon ignored the groan, focusing intently on the wound before him. He couldn’t afford to be distracted, not when it was his first time treating a wound and he had to finish this and get out of there as soon as possible.
His fingers worked with mechanical efficiency, applying the antiseptic with a ruthless precision.
He could feel Ruby’s eyes on him, but he didn’t meet her gaze.
When he was done, he stood up abruptly, not even bothering to check the dressing.
“There,” he said, his voice firm and expressionless.
“That should keep it from getting worse.”
“And your fever..” he pursed his lips as he finally looked at her.
He bent over to feel her temperature and he realized it was coming down a bit.
It was her fear from earlier that caused all of this, he thought to himself.
Jaxon’s eyes narrowed as he considered Ruby’s condition. It was clear that the fever was a result of what happened earlier.
“You need to rest,” He informed. There was no trace of emotions in his voice.
Ruby nodded slowly, her lips pressed into a thin line.
“Yes, I can. Thank you for your help,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Good night” he wished, picking up the first aid kit as he left the room.
