Chapter 21
Ruby arrived home that day and felt more relieved than the past few days.
Jaxon’s driver had dropped her off and that made her avoid any unnecessary troubles.
She also collected a few foodstuffs from his kitchen which she had used to feed in the evening.
She just retired to bed when she was abruptly woken up by a sound.
She mumbled softly as she yawned sitting up from the bed, wondering where the sound must have come from.
It was the sounds of incoming footsteps.
She quickly climbed off the bed and turned on the torchlight of her phone and she walked slowly to the window to check what it was.
It was just a man dressed in black and it didn’t bother too much as her neighbors were fond of loitering around.
That was one disadvantage of living in a busy neighborhood.
She yawned and went back to bed, using the bed cover to cover herself, she was about to drift back to sleep when the sound of shattering glasses was heard.
“Ha!!” Ruby yelled in fright. It was her window that shattered. She quickly turned on the lights to see different broken glasses on the ground, a stone included.
Ruby’s heart pounded in her chest as she scanned the room, her eyes wide with fear.
There, on the floor, was a stone with a small note tied to it. She picked it up, shaking her fingers and brushing against the rough edges of the rock.
As she untied the note, her mind raced. Who would do this? And why? Her eyes widened as she read the words written on the paper: “I’m coming for you.”
Ruby’s breath caught in her throat. Who could have sent this? Was it someone she knew? But she only knew a few people and they were definitely not her enemy. Ophelia would never do this no matter how angry she was.
Her eyes suddenly flooded with tears as she jumped down from the bed, stepping on a few broken glasses in the process.
“Ahh,” she winced in pain as blood began to flow from her legs. The tears she’d been trying so hard to hold back began to flow down as well.
She shook in extreme fear as she realized that her house was surrounded, she could see the shadows of two men. Their heavy footsteps, getting louder.
The fear coursed through her veins like ice, the sound of the men’s footsteps echoing in her head.
Ruby stumbled towards the bedroom door, glancing back at the window. She knew she needed to get out of there before they reached her. But where could she go?
Ruby pressed her back against the door, desperate to think of a plan. The window was too small to climb out of, and if she opened the door, they would see her.
Suddenly, a crash from the living room downstairs sent a jolt of panic through her.
They were trying to get into her house.
The first thing she did was turn off the lights in her room, then she proceeded to call for help.
She ran to the door of her room and bolted it. Then she ran into her wardrobe, ignoring the pain she was feeling as her survival instinct had already kicked in.
Due to her small stature, she was able to fit in. She immediately closed the wardrobe.
With shaky hands and heavy breath, she went through her contact list. Ophelia would not answer her call. Kevin was definitely not the one to call.
She quickly clicked on Jaxon’s number, calling for help. Now she only wished he picked up.
She called him for the first time, and the second time, yet there was no response.
“Pick up jerk!” Ruby cried as she bit her lips hard, her heart pounding in her chest.
“Just pick up” Her lower lips quivered, as she parted silently that he picked up.
Just then, her prayer was answered as Jaxon’s deep voice peered out from the phone speakers.
“What do you want? It’s late” He sounded displeased, his voice cold and dry.
“Please help me” Ruby cried, her body going pale as she heard another loud bang on her door.
“What?” Jaxon suddenly sounded interested as he sat up from the chair he was sitting on. He was working when she called.
“Ple.. ase he…lp me…” Ruby stammered, in fear. Her body was already soaked with sweat.
“Help you with what?” Jaxon raised his voice in annoyance.
“I.. I…” She kept on stammering as she was too scared to sleep.
“Ruby, it’s midnight. What is it?” Jaxon asked.
“Some unknown men are trying to get into my house” She whimpered in a low voice.
“What?” Jaxon exclaimed standing up from the chair he was sitting on that instant.
“They’re trying to break through my door and they already broke my window..” she cried helplessly.
“Where are you now?” Jaxon questioned grabbing his car keys as he walked towards his garage.
“In my wardrobe. I’m there” she replied in a low voice as more tears streamed down from her face as another bang was heard. They had finally broken the door.
“They’re inside my house already!” Ruby cried, her whole body shaking out of fear.
“Look, Ruby” Jaxon had already gotten into his car as he drove off at high speed.
He knew something like this was bound to happen, she was never going to be safe there alone.
That’s why he kept some of his men on standby, in case anything of such happened. And it did.
“Remain where you are..” he instructed.
“Don’t make a single sound and don’t come out till I come to get you. Okay?” He carefully instructed as Ruby nodded.
“Good. I’ll be there soon. There’s no need to be scared”
“Please hurry” Ruby pleaded, her heart beating faster than ever.
“I’m on my way. Just do as I asked you to” And with that, Jaxon made another phone call.
“Bloody Bastards” he hissed, stepping on his brakes as the car drove faster.
