Chapter nine
“Ruby, are you in there??” Ophelia knocked on Ruby’s door loudly, in the early hours of the morning.
“Ruby!!!!” She yelled, knocking loudly, not caring if she disturbed the neighbors.
She had already called Ruby, but she got no answer.
“Who’s that?” Ruby muttered to herself as she stretched out her arms and legs, yawning loudly.
“RUBYYYYYY” Ophelia screamed.
“Oh my gosh!” Ruby gasped, startled as she fell off the couch she was lying on.
“Ophelia? What’s she doing here?” She asked herself, as she slowly sat up from the ground.
She was so exhausted that she slept off on the couch.
After walking miles last night, she finally found a taxi and the first thing she did was freshen up and then she fell asleep.
Jaxon was a real demon that needed to be avoided and she prayed that he never called her again.
“Ruby??” Ophelia called again, as she was sure that her friend was inside.
“I’m coming” Ruby replied as she stood up from the ground in a flash.
“Just a minute ” she added walking over to the door. She was just about to open the door when she paused and took a look around her sitting room.
Her dress, shoes, purse. They were still in the sitting room. If Ophelia saw them she would immediately recognize her.
“Oh shit” Ruby cursed, placing her hand over her mouth as she rushed to pick everything up from the ground.
She ran to her room, where she hid the dress and shoes properly.
“Ruby!! What the hell are you doing inside there? Are you going to take ages to open the door?” Ophelia asked in annoyance.
“I’m coming, ” Ruby replied, running back to the sitting room as she opened the door.
“You!!!” Ophelia groaned the moment Ruby opened the door as she raised her fist in the air like she wanted to hit Ruby.
“What took you so long?” She asked, walking into the house, while Ruby shut the door.
“I was sleeping,” Ruby replied.
“By this time of the day?? It’s fucking 10 in the morning” Ophelia pointed out, taking her seat.
“Sorry, I overslept. I was exhausted..”
“And what’s making you exhausted? You’ve paid Kim’s hospital bills. There’s no need for you to work hard anymore” Ophelia reasoned.
“It’s not that” Ruby scratched the back of her head as Ophelia fixed her eyes on her.
“Then it’s what?”
“What kept you up all night to make you this tired? The workaholic ruby never wakes up by 10, you should be an alarm” Ophelia teased. While Ruby was trying so hard to raise money for her sister, she usually left the house at six in the morning. Just so she could work many shifts.
“Don’t ask me” Ruby waved her off.
“Whatever, guess what?” Ophelia asked with an interesting look on her face.
“What?” Ruby asked, looking bored.
“You know my dad is the manager of June..” she began as Ruby immediately recognized the June she was talking about.
Ophelia was always talking about one June, a rich spinster who ran a successful business, now she knew it was the June she met last night.
“What about it?”
“So she hosted a party and invited some of her workers of course. My dad was invited, so I managed to convince him to go in his place and he agreed!!” Ophelia squealed happily.
“You know I actually wanted to meet my crush, Vaughn, because I heard he was attending with his wife and he did come with her”
“So?” Ruby raised a brow at Ophelia. She really was not in the mood to go back to that night, her scalp was still hurting.
“So?? Stop being such a bore.” Ophelia rolled her eyes.
“You can’t believe what happened there..” she continued.
“You see, I accidentally spilled my drink on a lady and apologized, but you can’t believe this, she was so rude and rejected my help. She actually avoided me like I was some kind of trash..” Ophelia scoffed, each time she thought of that, she couldn’t help but get angry.
“I kept on apologizing, but she kept on refusing, for a split second I thought she was a thief”
“Why would you think that?” Ruby suddenly butted in. If Ophelia had just let her go last night.
“Because she was acting like one”
“So because she avoided you, does that mean she’s a thief?? You don’t just go around blaming people. Some of them need their privacy..” Ruby stated, sounding paranoid.
“So you think I’m at fault? I’m your best friend, you should support me. And believe me, I felt insignificant due to the way she acted”
“Then you could have just avoided her, simple!”
“Look Ophelia, I’m not on anyone’s side, but one thing I’ve learned in life is to avoid those rich folks”
“She bumped into me first”
“Whatever, can we stop talking about that please?” Ruby pleaded as she placed her hand on her forehead lazily, and she closed her eyes.
“Come to think of it, why did I feel like you were at that party” Ophelia pursed her lips as Ruby snapped her eyes open.
“Me!! Why would I go there??” She questioned alerted.
“I don’t know” Ophelia shook her shoulders.
“But I actually felt that lady was you, I mean the aura and”
“Come on Ophelia “Ruby chuckled sheepishly.
“Why would I go to a party like that, who would even invite me??* She laughed.
“That’s true, there’s no way you could have gotten in” Ophelia nodded her head in agreement. But yesterday at some point, she believed that lady was Ruby.
“I want to sleep,” Ruby yawned.
“I have an afternoon shift and I need a lot of rest” she stated, as she lay in the cough.
“Come on” Ophelia grumbled.
“I’ve not even told you the most interesting part of it all..” she pouted, she had yet to tell Ruby that the lady was her crush, Mr Vaughn’s wife.
“I’m not interested in hearing it” Ruby confessed, closing her eyes.
“But I just came here, aren’t you going to keep me company??”
“I have to work for a living Ophelia, you don’t “Ruby emphasized.
“Why did you still need to work, I thought you won the lottery. You really haven’t told me how you won that money??” Ophelia grilled.
“Fix yourself something from the kitchen, we’ll talk later” Ruby mumbled pretending as if she was slowly drifting into sleep.
That was the only way to stop Ophelia from talking about the party and ask how she got the money.
“Damn you!!” Ophelia grumbled, standing up from the chair as she walked to the kitchen.
“Phew,” Ruby sighed in relief the moment she was gone.
