“Ms. Baker, please answer my question.”
I called out to Katie Baker, who was about to leave after receiving the bank card. She froze, then quickly turned around, her eyes welling with tears as she looked at Larry Tate. As expected, he stepped in to defend her.
“Summer Cooper, do you really have to make a scene in front of so many people?” he said. “What post? I’ve never heard Katie Baker mention it.”
I smiled, having anticipated his reaction. When I opened my browsing history, the post was already gone. But fortunately, I had taken screenshots.
“See the evidence now? You didn’t seem so protective when Anders was the one suffering.”
As I spoke, I turned my phone around, showing the screenshots to Larry Tate.
“Here’s your proof.”
He took the phone, his fingers moving slowly across the screen. I could clearly see that the more he read, the more Katie Baker’s body trembled. After a few minutes, my patience started wearing thin.
“Are you done yet?”
Larry Tate closed the phone, remaining silent, probably thinking up some excuse. Of course, he was always protecting Katie Baker.
“I didn’t know about this,” he finally said. As his words fell, Katie Baker clung to his arm, crying uncontrollably.
“Dr. Tate, I was just too jealous of Ms. Cooper,” she sobbed. “You clearly don’t love her anymore, yet she still clings to you.”
“We love each other. I just wanted a proper place in your life!”
But her heart-wrenching sobs only earned a single response from Larry Tate: “Who told you I don’t love Summer Cooper?”
Katie Baker froze, and even I frowned upon hearing that.
One of our old classmates, who had been watching the drama unfold, nudged him playfully. “Come on now. When Summer Cooper didn’t come back, we all thought you were fooling around with this girl.”
“Are you blind? Do you think I’d be interested in her?”
“What do you mean by that, Dr. Tate?”
Realizing that his words had crossed a line, Larry Tate cleared his throat before continuing. “I’ve never had feelings for you. Any care I showed was simply a senior doctor looking out for a rookie nurse.”
I let out a cold laugh. Looking out for her? He even took his “care” all the way to her home.
I jabbed my finger into Larry Tate’s chest, enunciating each word clearly, “Love me?”
“When Anders and I returned home, soaking wet at the airport, where were you?”
“When I had a high fever and Anders had to cook and take care of me, where were you?”
“When Anders was lying on the operating table, where were you?”
“Larry Tate, you’re just an emotional cheat, too cowardly to even admit it!”
