Erica’s POV
The phone rang for a while but my father picked it up and I could hear his weak voice on the
other end.
“Father?”
“Erica, my daughter, how are you? Could you give me a few minutes?
I listened as his old weary footsteps trudged along the floor.
“Finally, I could tell that he was alone as his voice was a little louder than before.
“Erica? Are you all right? Has anything happened to you?”
The urgency in his voice was frightening but I assured him that I was safe.
“How have the discussions with Dante been? How soon can we get the jewel and put a stop to
Hazan’s tyranny?”
The worry in his voice frightened me and I tried my best not to stutter.
“Discussions are moving as fast as possible. I hope to conclude them with him soon. It’s just that
there are some matters in his pack that are causing a slight delay in the negotiations.”
I heard my father exhale sadly and I felt awful for keeping something as important as this on hold
just because Dante and I couldn’t let go of our past.
“I understand that you are doing your best, Erica. It’s just that things here have gotten worse. Half
of our pack has evacuated for their own safety and the only ones that are left are the ones that
have nowhere to go and they’re struggling to find the basic amenities to survive. We’re trying our
best here to give relief to the less privileged but there’s only so much that we can do.”
Hearing how bad the situation had gotten shattered my heart and filled me with sorrow.
My pack members were counting on me. The longer I waited, the more I let them down.
“I am really trying my best, father. We just have to be patient.”
“I know that you are, Erica. I understand that you and Dante have a past. I have a feeling that it
might affect the negotiations but I trust you and I trust your judgment. I know that you always
have the pack at heart.”
My heart did a nervous flip in my chest. Of course, my father knew about Dante, he knew that
the kids were his, but I felt that I had let him down by letting Dante get to me all over again after
he kicked me out of his life.
“I will try harder Father.”
There was a thick silence between us and I could tell that we both wanted to say something but I
probed him first.
“Father, is there something that you want to tell me?”
He took a deep breath and stuttered for a while before he finally spoke.
“I had a dream, Erica. You were there. I can’t remember it but once I woke up, I felt uneasy in my
chest. I felt weak but at the same time, I felt something had been awakened in me. I need to
know if anything strange has happened to you in the past few days.”
It was almost as if he could read my mind and I felt encouraged to tell him what happened during
my meeting with Dante.
“I had scheduled a meeting with Dante and ended up getting into a slight squabble with his no-
good sister. I felt this rage exploding inside me and I shifted into my wolf. I couldn’t control it and I
was this large monstrous black wolf with bright red glowing eyes. My back nearly touched the
ceiling on my paws were so heavy that I cracked the marble tiles between under them. I was so
scared, father. I don’t know what to do. I know that I am a pure breed out for like you but what
truly am I?”
My father’s voice was filled with even more worry.
“It was just as I feared. You have wakened the wolf inside of you but it wasn’t supposed to
happen like this.”
I was even more confused.
“What are you talking about? What wasn’t supposed to happen like this?”
“Erica, you must listen to me. You are a pure-breed alpha wolf and as a pure-breed alpha, your
transformation is largely dependent on your emotions. The day I found you and you told me the
story of how Dante treated you, was the day that my fear began to grow it was why I treated you
so much love and care but it seemed like the damage that Dante had done was permanent and it
has affected your wolf.”
“I still don’t understand what you are saying, Father. What is going on.?
“Erica, your transformation and the type of wolf that you are gifted as a pure breed alpha is
largely dependent on how you feel. A pure breed alpha with so much negative emotion calls
forward a dark spirit that ravages and takes over the mind of the wolf. He feeds off your anger
and aggression and the angrier you are, the more likely you are to lose control. If your wolf was
black as you have said, it confirms that the hate and maltreatment that Dante gave you those
years ago has caused this dark spirit to latch onto your wolf.”
I was dumbfounded and filled with fear.
“There…There is a dark spirit in my wolf? Is there a way for me to get rid of it?”
“Sadly, I have no idea.. there’s only controlling the wolf and keeping your emotions in check so
that he doesn’t overwhelm you and turn you into a ruthless monster. This is why purebred
Alpha’s are so rare. Those who have allowed the dark spirits take hold of them are unable to
control it and become brutal and dangerous, so to avoid things like this, they choose to
interbreed with other wolves to spare their children of this gene. But you must know that it isn’t
all bad and that there is always hope. I promise that you will find a way through this and I will
always be here to help. But for now, I suggest that you stay away from anything that could trigger
the negativity inside you and surround yourself with as much love and positivity as possible.”
My father’s revelation left me dumbfounded and all I could do for now was nod, even though he
couldn’t see me. I was terrified of who I could be.
I looked at myself in the mirror and feared the possibility of harming my own children.
“No. I couldn’t let such thoughts grow in my mind.”
“I’ll be a fine father. Thank you for the information. I am happy that you were honest with me.”
The line went dead and I placed the phone face down on the table.
I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I stroked my face in fear.
It seemed almost impossible to believe I was hiding a monster inside of me.
