Callie understood, “It seems so.” She stood up and walked to the window, her back filled with sorrow. “I should have listened to you and not trusted Nelson, but it’s too late now.”
With his back turned, his expression was unclear. He seemed to take a sip of tea. “I’ll give you some money to pass on to Regan.”
“Why don’t you give it to her yourself?”
“To do you a favor, Miss Marsh,” Jaquan said lazily, leaning back on the cushion with a casual smile.
Callie leaned forward, her hair brushing his nose. She said, “Mr. Scott, are you trying to please me?”
“Always have been.”
That day, when she returned to her hotel, the receptionist informed her that someone had upgraded her to a suite.
Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the high-rise, Callie looked down at the night scene, knowing it was Jaquan’s doing.
He always seemed so considerate, but could he really be trusted?
Being a selfish person, after seeing Nelson’s true colors, she wouldn’t trust anyone.
When Jaquan’s money arrived, she arranged to meet Regan and got straight to the point. “I think you must be in need of money right now. This is from Jaquan, it should help you out temporarily.”
Regan looked unwell, curled up in her seat with a distant expression. “It’s quite a lot. I can’t take it.”
“You still have your pride. But as someone who’s been there, let me tell you, if you don’t take it, things will get even harder for you.”
Regan suddenly looked directly at her. “Callie, Nelson also gave me some money last night.”
At the sudden mention of his name, Callie lowered her eyes.
“Do you know why they are helping me?”
She shook her head.
“Because my father invested in a project that is their common enemy. They had no choice but to sacrifice the insignificant Padilla family. So their help is more like compensation.”
Regan suddenly had an air of having seen it all. A young lady who saw through the business world’s truths overnight knew there were no eternal friends in this world.
Callie understood the truth and opened her mouth slightly. No wonder Jaquan didn’t come himself.
“I don’t blame them,” Regan said with a bitter smile. “Callie, sometimes I envy you. At least you married a very capable man.”
Envy? Callie was silent. Her life wasn’t as perfect as it seemed either.
“By the way, I have something to tell you. I’m getting married. The wedding is in a week. Remember to come.” Regan casually dropped this bombshell and picked up her bag to leave.
Callie was stunned. Married? In a week? So soon!
“Business marriage. The young master of the Ellison family has always had designs on Regan.” In the Scott Group office, Jaquan bent over, focused on painting an oil painting.
Callie was too shocked. “Which Ellison family?”
“Which other Ellison family in Ylosea?”
She remembered now. It was the business giant Ellison family, also Marilyn’s family-the woman who put Jaquan and Nelson in a difficult position.
“What’s his name?”
Jaquan straightened up. “The Ellison family has two children. His name is Isaac Ellison, Marilyn’s brother.”
Callie had heard of him but wasn’t familiar. Once again, she realized how casual marriages could be.
“So, how about going with me next week?”
Callie was incredulous. “You ruined their family, and you still have the nerve to go?”
Jaquan looked innocent. “Not just me; Nelson will be there too. You can’t just scold me alone.”
