Georgia was caught in the depths of despair. The only name that came to her mind was Kayden, which puzzled herself as well. She wondered why his name slipped out so naturally in such a critical moment. Perhaps her reliance on him had already taken root deep within her heart.
Over the past few days, Kayden had indeed surprised her time and again. He always appeared just in time to shield her from danger and insult, or help her solve any troubles. Like the time when she thought she was about to lose face in front of Karis, only for Karis to be the one embarrassed.
Another example was what happened in the banquet held by the Vincent family. She hadn’t been eligible to attend, yet Kayden brought her along through some ingenious methods.
The most recent one was when the company suffered the computer crisis. He had helped her solve the issue, which allowed her to establish her place in the company and earn the respect of even the veteran employees.
This man had brought her so many surprises, and deep down, she had already acknowledged his presence in her life.
Thus, when danger struck, it’s almost out of her instinct to think of him. He was the only one who would work miracles for her. She trusted this man was gonna be her savior, though everyone else despised him.
It was like how one instinctively calls for their mother in times of crisis.
The name clearly left Damian momentarily stunned. “Kayden? Who?” he asked.
Georgia sobbed, her words coming out in fits and starts. “H-h-he is my husband. If you dare to touch me, he will let you pay the price. He’ll kill you in person.”
Damian slightly paused at her words. “So, your husband is quite formidable, is he?” he asked in a cold tone.
Georgia straightened her back. There was a hint of pride in her voice as she declared, “Of course, he’s the most powerful. With a single command, he can summon countless soldiers.”
It was the first time she had described Kayden as the most powerful. He had once been dismissed as a fool, a good-for-nothing, yet in this moment, he became her beacon of hope.
Her thoughts drifted back to last time when the contract was successfully signed. Those people specially came to the hotel to find Kayden by helicopters and armored vehicles. She might have exaggerated the scene, but it could very well save her life now.
“Give me a break, that’s bullshit!” Cheetah interjected, unable to contain himself. “Everyone in Hiphia knows that you married a fool. A fool can summon an army with a single command? You’ve gotta be kidding! Thank goodness I’m here; otherwise, you might have had them fooled.”
“Damian, she is just stalling for time. Her husband is a worthless fool. Don’t even mention him gathering soldiers. He’d probably be too scared to even stay standing if he’s here right now!” Cheetah tried his best to convince Damian.
Damian burst out laughing at these words. He stepped closer to Georgia and said, “If your husband is as powerful as you say, then I’m curious to see if he’ll come swooping in to save your ass before I end your life.”
He spread his hand wide, ready to end Georgia’s life with just one strike.
Georgia realized that Kayden wouldn’t be able to appear in time. After all, he hadn’t come home for days, and she had no idea where he was.
Looking blankly at Damian’s raised hand, she knew that her life would be forever frozen in this moment.
She let the teardrop slip from the corner of her eye with resignation. Maybe she truly wouldn’t see the sun rise tomorrow.
While at that critical moment, a figure silently jumped down from the rooftop.
Thud! He aimed a kick at Damian, sending him stumbling backward a few steps.
Damian didn’t fall, though; he steadied himself. He looked up to see a man in black standing before him. Indeed, that kick had come from this man. It was a scraggy man, who had gaunt cheeks, as if he’s all skin and bones.
Yet his gaze was unwavering, locking eyes with Damian as if to defeat him through sheer will.
Neither of them showed the slightest hint of fear. Their eyes remained fiercely locked in confrontation.
About ten seconds later, the skinny man moved slightly. He took a step forward to stand before Georgia, as if showing he would protect her no matter what.
Georgia stared at his back, feeling her heart was pounding crazily. Was it Kayden? He really made it in time?
“You’re her husband?” Damian couldn’t help but ask.
If that were true, it would truly be a case of “Beauty and Beast.” This skinny man had an average appearance, and one might even say he was somewhat ugly. While Damian didn’t pay much attention to those love stories, he understood the implications of “Beauty and Beast.”
The skinny man shook his head but said nothing. His response seemed to be a denial of Damian’s speculation.
A cold sneer escaped Damian. “You know what? It’s been years since anyone dared to kick me like that, and you are the first!” he said as he slowly patted his chest where he had been struck.
The man’s expression shifted slightly. He remained silent but turned to face Georgia. His facial features resembled those of ancient people, as if he came from a long-lost era. With his dark skin and chiseled features, he exuded an air of solemnity.
Georgia felt that staring at this man for any longer could inspire a sense of respect in her.
“Who, who are you?” There was a hint of confusion in her voice.
Instead of answering directly, the man made an unexpected move.
He knelt on one knee and bowed his head as he dared not meet Georgia’s gaze. He behaved like he’s swearing his loyalty to his master. “I am Britton Foster, the Right Envoy under Defender of the South. I greet you, my lady. I apologize for my late arrival to your aid and hope for your forgiveness. I will accept whatever punishment you may give me.”
His demeanor and posture were reminiscent of an ancient servant.
Georgia felt a mix of surprise and disbelief, as it’s her first time to receive such a grand display of respect.
What did he just call her? My lady! That was a title reserved for the wives of nobility in the past. It left Georgia completely perplexed. Could it be that…
Britton’s resolute voice interrupted Georgia’s thoughts. “My lady, you can punish me as you see fit after I eliminate our enemies! Rest assured, I will not allow anyone to harm you.”
Without waiting for Georgia’s response, he stood up and turned to face Damian once more.
There was a subtle change in Damian’s gaze. “Who on earth are you? And who is she?”
Britton still wore an expressionless look. He didn’t answer Damian’s questions but coldly declared, “Anyone who hurt her shall die!”
