I immediately held my head as I felt a sharp pain when I opened my eyes. “Honey!” Alex said quickly.
“What’s wrong? Why do you look so worried?” I asked. “And what happened?” The last thing I remember is being in his office, and when I stood up, I suddenly felt dizzy.
“You really scared me, honey. I thought something serious happened to you,” he answered, not responding to my question. I tried to sit up and realized that I was in a hospital.
“Wait a second, honey. The doctor will be here soon. She took care of you earlier and did some tests. She’ll be back with the results,” Alex reassured me. I nodded, and as I tried to get up, he quickly helped me.
“Thank you,” I said with a smile, which he returned with a nod.
“You’re always welcome. And there’s no need to thank me. You’re my wife, and it’s my responsibility to take care of you, okay?”
“I didn’t say anything.” Silence fell between us until my hospital room door opened, and a doctor in uniform walked in.
“Hi, how are you feeling, Mrs. McGregor?” she asked with a smile.
“I’m okay, just a slight headache.”
“That’s normal. You’ll often experience this, so always have someone with you. Don’t go anywhere alone.”
“Huh? Why? Is something wrong with her?” Alex asked, worried.
“Relax, Mr. McGregor. You might faint before your wife does,” the doctor laughed before looking at me. “You need to be extra careful because you’re five weeks pregnant, Mrs. McGregor.”
I couldn’t respond. My mind went blank. How could this happen? I shook my head slightly. Of course, I know how it happened, but why now?
“Yes! Yes! I’m going to be a dad?” Alex cheered, looking at me, his smile so wide it could split his face in two. “What’s wrong, honey?” His smile disappeared, replaced by concern.
“Nothing. I can’t celebrate anymore because you’re doing enough celebrating for the both of us.” The doctor laughed at what I said. I decided I’d tell Alex my worries when we were at home. I didn’t want the doctor to overhear and possibly faint herself-my mouth tends to have no filter.
I stayed at the hospital for a few more hours until I felt stable. The doctor came back and gave me vitamins for me and the baby, along with some reminders on how to take care of myself.
Alex listened carefully, not wanting to miss anything the doctor said, which made me smile. We finally went home, and while driving, I could see how happy my husband was.
Alex suggested we stop at a restaurant to eat before going home. He joked that we shouldn’t forget to feed ourselves, especially the baby, who needed nutrients.
When we arrived at the mansion, we were greeted by worried faces-Patt, Princess, and Enzo but Alex was so excited to tell them the news.
The three of them looked stunned. I wasn’t sure if it was shock, disbelief, or joy. “Are you sure?” Princess finally exclaimed.
“Yes, and as I remember, you took care of my wife’s grandparents, so I hope you’ll also take care of her when I’m not around,” Alex said, which made me raise an eyebrow.
“And you think I can’t take care of myself?” I asked, which made all three of them laugh.
“I know you can, but your situation is different now. The doctor said you need to be careful, right?” my husband replied, and my friends agreed.
“Fine, do whatever you want. I just want to go upstairs and sleep.” I stood up, and Alex did, too. I saw my friends exchange knowing looks, surely about Alex-his excitement was really off the charts.
The next morning, I was surprised to see Alex still at home during breakfast. “Why didn’t you go to your office?” I asked, reaching for the orange juice the maid had just placed on the table. He wasn’t beside me when I woke up, so I thought he’d already left.
“I couldn’t focus there, so I didn’t go to work today,” he replied, leaving me speechless. What’s gotten into him? “Don’t worry about my job. Von is there, and he’ll call if something comes up.”
“Alex, you can’t just skip work!” I exclaimed. What if this became a habit?
“Honey, please understand. I know you feel like you’re becoming a burden to me, but that’s not true. I’m just really excited and worried about you, especially after you fainted.”
“Now that I know my condition, I’ll be more careful. What you’re doing isn’t right.”
“Just let it be, honey. It’s only for now. Once Princess is okay, I’ll return to my normal routine.” I sighed, understanding where he was coming from.
“How about this-I promise I won’t leave the house. And if I really need to go somewhere, I’ll ensure you’re with me or that I’m not alone.”
“That sounds fair to me,” he said with a smile, and I felt relieved. I didn’t want his company to suffer just because I was pregnant. “But today, we have a schedule.”
I looked at him, the bread I was about to eat still hovering in the air. “What schedule? I don’t remember having anything planned except visiting Serendipity, which I already canceled.”
“We’re going to visit your grandparents. I know they’ll be thrilled.”
“Come on, Alex!” Knowing those two, they’d be even more over-the-top than my husband.
“Then we’re going to my parents. I called them, and they’re expecting us for dinner. We’ll have lunch with your grandparents first.”
I shook my head at all the plans he made for the day. Since I’d be with him, I wouldn’t refuse, even if I already anticipated a flood of reminders from my grandparents, especially Grandma.
I didn’t mind Alex’s plans. I was happy, too. But now that I’m pregnant, I can’t help but worry about our situation.
There are still things I need to resolve, and I know my life is in danger. I didn’t expect this pregnancy, but because of the joy on Alex’s face yesterday, I pushed aside my fears.
But that doesn’t mean everything is fine. As Alex said, our enemies are already making moves-what if my baby gets caught in the crossfire? I couldn’t bear to see Alex hurt, and I know that’s what would happen if anything happened to our child.
“Honey,” I jumped as Alex suddenly spoke, waving his hand in front of my face. “Whatever you’re thinking, it’s not going to happen, so relax. I will take care of you and our baby and protect you both, no matter what.” I nodded and smiled. I believed in him and in what he said.
