Three months later…
At 16:45, Xavier and Avery were on their way home when Avery’s phone started ringing. She furrowed her brows when she saw the caller ID.
She put the phone on speaker and said, “Hello, Uncle Lambert. Are you looking for me?”
Uncle Lambert replied, “I am sorry to disturb you, Avery. There was a fatal accident involving a truck and two taxis.
I was told that the Paramedics were sending the injured people to our hospital. We need your help.”
Avery indicated that she would be there in ten minutes. Wayne made a U-turn, then he drove back to the hospital.
Avery looked at her husband and said, “Honey, why don’t you go to the apartment to rest? I think it is going to be a long night.”
Xavier took her in his arms and kissed her, then Wayne drove his boss to the apartment. He then asked one of the bodyguards to fetch him. He accompanied his boss until his colleague fetched him.
Uncle Lambert provided the doctors with food while they were waiting for the patients. Forty people were involved in the accident, fourteen died on the scene and twenty-six were heavily injured.
Avery and other doctors managed to save twenty lives. The surgery lasted fourteen hours. At 8m, Avery called her husband and asked him to fetch her.
Her husband was waiting for her in the parking lot. Xavier asked her to wait for him in her office. Then he went to her to fetch her. Avery was so exhausted she wanted to bathe and sleep.
Xavier took his wife in a bridal style and walked to the parking lot. He placed her on the seat, then he fastened the seatbelt for her. He walked to the driver’s side and drove his car to the Taylor mansion.
Avery told her husband that they managed to save twenty patients, and then she fell into a deep sleep. Xavier drove the car slowly in order not to disturb his wife.
When they arrived home, he took her in his arms and walked to the mansion. He greeted his elders and went to their bedroom. He helped her to bathe, then he tucked her under the covers.
Xavier bade goodbye to the elders and went to work. He didn’t want to go to work today, but he didn’t have a choice. He had back-to-back meetings.
Avery woke up at 12 pm. She washed her face and brushed her teeth. Then she headed to the living room to greet the elders. She was about to greet her grandfather-in-law when she felt dizzy and then she fainted.
Grandpa Taylor was so scared and shouted, “Blade, bring the car around.” Caroline was in the garden when she heard her father-in-law shouting. She dropped the flowers and ran to the house.
When she entered the house, she found her father-in-law holding Avery in his arms. She was so scared and asked, “What happened, Dad?”
Her father-in-law replied, “I think she fainted because of exhaustion.” Then he walked to the driveway with her granddaughter in love in his arms.
Caroline called Dr Lambert and told him about her daughter-in-law’s situation. Fortunately, Dr Lambert was sleeping in the doctors’ rooms. Immediately he asked two nurses to go to the parking lot with a stretcher.
Caroline called her husband and told him about Avery’s illness. John dropped everything and rushed to the hospital.
When Dr Lambert saw the Taylor family car, he rushed to them. He placed Avery on the stretcher, then they rushed her to the emergency room.
Grandpa Taylor dialed his precious grandson’s number. When it was connected, he said, “My precious grandson, please come to the hospital urgently. My granddaughter in love is not well.”
Xavier was so scared and replied, “I am on my way, Grandpa.” He looked at his managers and said, “The meeting is adjourned. My wife is not well.” Then he hastened his pace and went to the underground parking lot.
Cole looked at his boss and said, “Let me drive you, Sir.” Xavier nodded his head and sat at the back.” Mr Taylor senior called August and said, “Please come to the hospital urgently, August. My granddaughter in love has fainted.”
Martins went to Siyabonga’s office and told him that he had just received a call from Mr Taylor senior indicating that Avery had fainted. Siyabonga took his car keys and said, “Let’s go, Sir.” Then Siyabonga drove the car to the hospital.
When Xavier arrived at the hospital, Avery was in her private ward talking to their grandfather. He sat on the bed beside her and asked with concern in his voice, “How are you feeling, Sweetheart?”
Avery smiled faintly and replied, “Don’t worry, my love. I fainted because of exhaustion. Uncle Lambert has taken the blood test.”
Blood drained from her husband’s face when he heard that his wife had fainted. He was reminded of her late wife, Valencia. She fainted because she had stomach cancer. He hugged his wife tightly, praying silently in his heart.
At that moment, Avery’s father and Siyabonga walked into the private ward. He heaved a sigh of relief when he found his daughter awake and talking to her husband.
August greeted everyone, then he approached his daughter and asked, “I am glad that you are awake, my dearest daughter.” Avery told her father that she worked the whole night. Hence, she fainted.
At that moment, Dr Lambert walked into the private ward grinning from ear to ear, and said, “Congratulations, young Mr Taylor and young Mrs Taylor. Young Mrs Taylor is eight weeks pregnant.”
Xavier hugged his wife tightly and kissed her on top of her head. He was over the moon. He looked at his wife with eyes full of love and said, “Thank you, my stunning wife.”
Grandpa Taylor hugged his son, John, beaming with joy. John turned to his best friend, August, grinning from ear to ear, and hugged him. Siyabonga was overjoyed.
Her mother-in-law kissed Avery on both cheeks and said, “I am so happy, Sweetheart.” Avery smiled and replied, “I am happy too, Mom.” Then her mother-in-law hugged her son tightly.
Dr Lambert smiled and said, “Young Mr Taylor, please take your wife home to rest.” He handed the prescription to Xavier, then he left.
His father-in-law took the prescription from his son-in-law and went to the pharmacy with Siyabonga. He congratulated his boss for being a grandfather. Mr Martins congratulated Siyabonga for being an uncle.
When they arrived home, Xavier took his wife to their bedroom to rest. Avery dialed her Godmother’s number. When it was connected, she said, “Godmother, you are going to be a grandmother. I am eight weeks pregnant.”
Her Godmother was so happy that she cried. When her husband and their sons heard the news, they thanked the Lord for His faithfulness. Their hearts leap with joy.
Then Avery called Aunt Bridge and told her the good news. Aunt Bridge was so happy for her.
Grandpa Taylor invited his in-laws to celebrate. August went home to fetch his wife and their son. The Evans family picked up Bridgette and their grandson since their son-in-law was still at work.
Two days later, Avery went shopping with her mother-in-law. Whilst they were shopping, they met Aunt Elizabeth and Lily.
Aunt Elizabeth looked at Avery with disdain in her eyes and said aloud, “Avery, you are such a waste of space. You have been married for two years, but you haven’t conceived yet. You’re just a hen that doesn’t lay eggs.
It’s clear to me that you are infertile. I will lend you my precious niece to be your surrogate, free of charge.” Then she laughed out loud, but the people who were near them didn’t take what she said as a joke. It had a bad taste in their mouth.
Avery was not offended. She looked at her mother-in-law, and they laughed out loud. Aunt Elizabeth was so embarrassed and humiliated. Avery held her mother-in-law’s arm and left.
Aunt Elizabeth wished the ground would open up and swallow her. People looked at her with disgust in their eyes.
A middle-aged woman shook her head and said, “You are so cruel. How could you embarrass a young lady like that?” Elizabeth sneered, “Don’t be a busybody.” Then she left with Lily in tow.
