Brayden took the medicine, looked at it, and placed it in the drawer of the bedside table.
Mrs. Wright sat on a sofa nearby. “Your father called today and said he plans to take two days off to come and see Jenna.”
Cody was extremely busy, so finding two days was not easy.
Jenna quickly shook her head. “Dad is so busy, there’s no need for him to come specifically.”
“Jenna, even though you and Jasper didn’t have a wedding, you are legally married. We are family. When you’re sick, it’s only right for your parents to be by your side. Even though he’s busy, your health is more important,” Mrs. Wright said, holding Jenna’s hand. “As long as our family of four is safe and healthy, I am content.”
“Mom, don’t be so sentimental,” Brayden couldn’t stand the atmosphere. “Do you want some water? I’ll get you a glass.”
Mrs. Wright wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. “I don’t need any.”
“Cough-” Jenna suddenly coughed, and both mother and son looked at her. Bright red blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
Brayden quickly grabbed a tissue to help her wipe it away, while Mrs. Wright hurried to get her medicine.
“This is terrible! She’s coughing up blood every day; when will it ever stop?”
“Call Sylvia, get Sylvia here!”
Brayden rushed to find Sylvia. In no time, Sylvia hurried into the room. Seeing Jenna’s weakened state, her heart clenched.
The teacher was right; Jenna’s condition was worsening and couldn’t be delayed any longer.
But… without the matching results, there was little Sylvia could do besides administering medication.
“Sylvia… am I going to die soon?” Jenna looked at Sylvia with dim eyes, as fragile as a candle in the wind, ready to be extinguished at any moment.
“No, no, I won’t let you die,” Sylvia held her cold hand. “Take your medicine; we’ll find a match.”
After comforting Jenna for a while longer, Sylvia left the room.
She went straight to the lab to draw blood. She had been so busy with other people’s matching tests that she hadn’t had time to test herself.
The nurses and doctors in the lab were swamped with matching tests, barely having a moment to breathe.
After drawing her blood, she saw Franklin waiting for her. Her long lashes fluttered as she looked at him with clear eyes. In the next moment, he strode over to her with his long legs.
His Italian tailored suit clung to his muscular frame, paired with a matching shirt buttoned up to his neck, revealing a long neck. Every accessory on him exuded an air of nobility.
He walked up to Sylvia with an imposing presence.
Seeing other men around looking at Sylvia with infatuated expressions, Franklin’s eyes flashed with a hint of ruthlessness and displeasure before returning to his usual indifferent look. He gazed down at Sylvia with a tender smile. “Does it hurt?”
Sylvia shook her head. “It’s just a test; it doesn’t hurt.”
Suddenly, Franklin pulled her into his arms with his strong arms tightly holding her soft body. He nuzzled her neck, inhaling her unique fragrance, and the intense emotions in his eyes disappeared in an instant.
“Let’s go home,” his deep voice whispered in her ear.
Sylvia smiled slightly and pecked his lips lightly. “Alright, be good. I still have work to do.”
The lab was short-staffed, and she decided to work overtime with her colleagues to get the matching results sooner.
Franklin pulled her into a secluded corner where few people would pass by.
His voice grew huskier. “Honey, give me a kiss, and I’ll let you go back to work.”
Sylvia grabbed his suit jacket tightly, not caring if it wrinkled.
A cold aura enveloped them as Franklin’s masculine scent filled her senses. She stood on tiptoe to kiss his thin lips but was about to pull away when he held her waist with one hand and pressed her head towards him with the other.
Her sweetness made Franklin unable to resist, kissing her deeply and passionately.
Finally, Sylvia went limp in his arms.
Franklin looked at her contentedly as she melted into his embrace. He kissed her eyes gently. “Don’t overwork yourself.”
He knew she desperately wanted to save Jenna but couldn’t neglect her own health.
His rough hand caressed Sylvia’s smooth skin while his lips kissed her face, lips, and neck lovingly but carefully so as not to leave marks that would embarrass her at work.
“Let go of me!” Sylvia pretended to glare at him.
Franklin only saw it as her being coy and whispered in her ear before leaving, “Don’t work too late tonight; I’ll come pick you up. Remember to call me.”
She wanted to tell him not to worry about her but swallowed the words back.
Sometimes, men need space to show their care too, right?
She nodded slightly, her eyes sparkling. “Okay.”
Franklin gently ruffled her hair, enjoying its softness under his fingers. “Good girl.”
After seeing Franklin off, Sylvia returned to the lab and immersed herself in the matching tests.
Time flew by quickly, and soon it was dinner time.
Some colleagues left for home while others stayed on duty.
“Dr. Sylvia, let’s go to the cafeteria for dinner,” a doctor called out.
Sylvia checked the time; it was already 6:30 PM. She looked at the blood sample in her hand. “I’ll finish this first; you guys go ahead.”
“Alright,” the doctor replied and left with the others.
Half an hour later, Sylvia stretched and stepped out of the lab only to freeze in place.
On a bench outside sat Franklin with his long legs crossed elegantly and a thermal lunchbox by his side.
Hearing movement, he looked up at her. “Come over and eat when you’re done.”
A warm feeling spread through Sylvia’s heart as she smiled brightly. “Why are you here?”
“I brought dinner for my dear wife,” Franklin said as he leaned in for a quick kiss on her lips. “I brought your favorite rib soup and stir-fried mushrooms with meat.”
His slender fingers opened the lunchbox, filling the hallway with delicious aromas that made Sylvia’s stomach growl with hunger.
She picked up chopsticks and began eating while Franklin leaned back lazily in his chair, watching her lovingly.
Seeing her eat obediently with her head down, exposing her fair neck like jade, Franklin felt his heart melt.
She quickly finished the food Franklin brought and drank the rib soup.
Looking up, she met Franklin’s affectionate gaze as he gently wiped away a grain of rice from the corner of her mouth with his finger. “You got some here.”
He mischievously put the grain into his mouth.
It was incredibly seductive.
Then he kissed her neck lightly. “Are you full?”
Sylvia nodded and noticed some rib soup on his lips glistening under the hallway lights. His deep eyes carried an innate nobility that softened his usually stern features.
Suppressing her racing heart, she asked, “Did you eat?”
“No, I want to eat you,” he said in a deep voice that resonated in Sylvia’s ears like an ancient well’s echoing depth.
Sylvia quickly looked around; luckily, no one was nearby.
Otherwise, she’d be too embarrassed to face anyone.
“Shut up! If someone hears you, how will I live?” She wanted to bite him. “Have some decency!”
Franklin chuckled at her flustered expression and pulled her into his arms again. “What’s wrong? Feeling restless?”
“Restless my foot! I’ve eaten; now leave so I can work.” Sylvia pushed him away.
Franklin seized the opportunity to hold both of her hands and pull her close again for another kiss before reluctantly letting go. “I’ll pick you up tonight. Don’t work too late.”
“Oh, just go already,” Sylvia said as she saw some colleagues returning down the hallway.
“I’m leaving,” Franklin said after giving her one last deep look before turning away.
Sylvia watched him leave before diving back into work.
Middle Evroya
Athena Women’s and Children’s Protection Association
A tall man was pleading with a woman in her thirties. “Sierra, please tell me where Evie is.”
Sierra sighed helplessly. “I really don’t know. Jasper, she hasn’t come back; I’m not lying.”
“But she took a flight back to Middle Evroya that day and there was a hijacking incident. How could she not be here?” Jasper felt frustrated; he believed Sierra must be keeping Evie’s whereabouts secret on Evie’s request.
Sierra genuinely hadn’t seen Evie. “Ask anyone else here if you don’t believe me. If I’m lying, may lightning strike me down.”
Seeing Sierra swear such an oath, Jasper couldn’t press further.
“Alright then. If you hear anything about her, let me know.”
“Try looking elsewhere; she’s really not here. Maybe she came to Middle Evroya but didn’t come back because she knew you’d look for her?” Sierra suggested.
Jasper felt another pang of pain at the thought. “Evie is such a silly girl. I’ll go now.”
