Sirena’s question jolted Rosalind from her reverie.
“Oh, sorry.” Rosalind nodded adsentmindedly, trying to refocus her attention.
“Is he your middle school classmate? Ulric mentioned having a desk partner who frequently skipped classes to work,” Sirena asked casually, as if they were old friends reminiscing.
However, beneath the casual tone, Rosalind sensed a subtle reminder of the disparity between herself and Ulric.
Sirena didn’t press further after her question, smoothly transitioning to the next topic.
At times, Rosalind couldn’t help but feel overly sensitive.
After about two hours of meticulous work, they finalized the contract.
Rosalind breathed a silent sigh of relief and stood up. “Thank you for your hard work, Lawyer Garner. I should be going now.”
“Wait! Why the rush? Ulric will be waking up soon. Let me call him, and we can have lunch together.”
Ulric… waking up soon?
She paused, listening to Sirena’s explanation. “I’m not sure what he was up to last night. I asked, but he didn’t say anything! After two back-to-back meetings this morning, he looked exhausted, so I suggested he take some rest.”
“…”
Rosalind thought, it’s understandable that Ulric wouldn’t say anything!
How could he explain to his former flame that he spent the night with a substitute?
“I won’t join you for lunch. I have other matters to attend to. Thank you, Lawyer Garner.”
With that, she turned to leave.
However, Sirena called her back, approaching in her high heels.
“Um… I have something to address directly. Please don’t take offense.”
“?”
“The hickey on your neck, you should cover it when you come to the main office. It doesn’t look good.” She pointed to the red mark on Rosalind’s neck. “Also, make sure to take proper precautions. Otherwise… neither the Walters family nor Ulric can afford the consequences.”
Actually, Rosalind had intentionally concealed it with foundation. Even her mother hadn’t noticed it at the hospital.
But perhaps due to a woman’s innate perceptiveness, Sirena must have scrutinized her closely.
“Miss Garner,” Rosalind’s voice remained composed and cool, “I appreciate your concern.”
“…”
“But why not remind Ulric not to leave such marks on me? That would be more helpful.”
She truly disliked this kind of passive-aggressive behavior, it was draining.
Undeniably, Sirena was Ulric’s first love. She possessed grace and capability. However, for now, Rosalind was still Ulric’s legally recognized wife.
Ethically and morally, Ulric had given her the right to stand up to Sirena.
Rosalind straightened her posture and walked out of Sirena’s office. She only relaxed slightly once she entered the elevator.
Just as she reached the entrance of the main office, Ulric’s call came through.
When she answered, his voice sounded groggy, as if he had just woken up. Sirena hadn’t been lying.
“Are you at the hospital?”
“No, I have an appointment with a colleague for prayers,” Rosalind replied, glancing up at the towering W Group building that pierced the sky, causing her to squint from the glare. “Is there something you need?”
“I’ll be home for dinner tonight.”
“Oh, send me your dinner preferences, and I’ll buy the ingredients on my way back.”
There was a pause on Ulric’s end before he suddenly asked, “Your tone sounds off. Is something wrong?”
“What could be wrong?” Rosalind laughed. “I was just immersed in work earlier. You go ahead and keep busy, I need to hurry and catch the subway to meet my colleague.”
She ended the call abruptly, then looked at the WhatsApp message from Tilda.
[Rosa, I’m already here! My cousin is with me, you don’t mind, right?]
[I don’t mind. Wait for me, I’ll join you shortly.]
