Nelson didn’t insist further.
After some time, the Vankey case was concluded and merged into the Oconnor Group.
The first snowfall of the year blanketed Ylosea, covering the ground in a layer of silver, with the distant sea lying calm and undisturbed.
Breath turned to frost.
During lunch break, Callie finished reading her book and looked out from the spring-like interior through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The view from over seventy floors up was a dazzling white, with snowflakes falling relentlessly to the ground.
She stepped out of the greenhouse and headed to Nelson’s office. Finding it empty, she guessed he was probably in a meeting again.
After waiting for a while without seeing him, she decided to take a thorough look around his office for the first time.
The documents on his desk were neatly arranged, and next to his laptop was a thermos cup, giving off the air of an old-fashioned official.
The important things were likely on his computer, but he had many computers, and she didn’t know the passwords.
The books on the shelves behind were numerous and varied. For anyone else, Callie might have thought they were just for show, but she knew the man who occupied this office well enough to be sure he had read them all. Any book she pulled out had his handwritten notes.
There were also several cacti and some green plants she couldn’t name on the desk, but no flowers.
Callie pondered for a moment, then went back to the greenhouse and brought two pots of jasmine. She replaced the cacti on his desk with them. The jasmine smelled nice, and seeing beautiful flowers might help him relax when he was tired from work.
Nelson still hadn’t returned.
So she left.
On her way downstairs at her usual time, she unexpectedly ran into Jett.
He appeared out of nowhere, patted her shoulder, and asked with a smile, “Miss Marsh, where did you just go?”
Caught off guard, Callie took two seconds to respond, “The rooftop…”
Jett was surprised. “The rooftop? Then I must have been mistaken. I thought I saw you coming out of Mr. Oconnor’s private elevator. It gave me a scare.”
Callie remained silent, feeling a thin layer of sweat on her back in the temperature-controlled room, a bit frightened.
Jett quickly changed the subject. “But what were you doing on the rooftop?”
Callie walked towards her office, raising her phone without missing a beat, “Taking pictures of the snow.”
Jett got excited immediately. “I took a lot of pictures today too!”
“My hometown also gets snow, but it doesn’t look as nice as it does here at Oconnor Group. Do you want to see my pictures?”
This boy was quite talkative. Callie didn’t respond, and he quickly switched topics again. “By the way, since it’s snowing today, I invited everyone to have hotpot. Miss Marsh, would you like to join us?”
This time his question was a bit cautious.
“Jett, you just started working here. Do you have the money for this?”
“… Well, I’m new here and thought it would be nice to get together with everyone.”
“I’ll see how it goes.”
When it was time to leave work, a group of people followed Jett enthusiastically to the elevator. Callie deliberately slowed down by two steps and only left after they had gone.
These days she had been coming and going with Nelson and might need to inform him.
She went to the garage but was surprised to find that Nelson’s car wasn’t there. After searching around, she still couldn’t find it.
Just then, Nelson called. As usual, his deep voice came through the phone, “Are you downstairs?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve sent a driver from Paucaster Villa Complex to pick you up. He’s on his way now; could you wait a bit?”
Callie realized something and asked in surprise, “What about you?”
“There’s been an accident at the Splendor Estate construction site. I’m heading to the hospital now,” he replied in his usual tone.
