“Did she hit you, Celina?” my aunt asked, pushing Donovan aside to interrogate me. Great.
“Yes” I confessed, wanting to kill Donovan for mentioning her “It was a stupid fight and we let it get a little out of hand.”
“A little? You have a severe injury, Celina, your forehead is hurt and your hands too.
I could see Donovan fixing his gaze on my hands, completely full of superficial cuts. His jaw tensed and his fists clenched.
“Don’t even think about it” I warned him, ignoring what my aunt was saying to me. I had got to know him well in a short time and being impulsive was one of his main characteristics.
Donovan shook his head, stubborn to listen to me. -Aunt, can you leave us alone for a moment?
“What? You and I are not done, you’re going to tell me every detail…”
“Later” I interrupted “I will tell you everything, but first let me be alone for a few minutes”
Reluctantly, she obeyed, but not before giving Donovan a killer look. My poor friend was really getting it.
“You’re not planning to do anything, right?” I wanted to make sure.
“She deserves a lesson” he muttered, looking at my forehead. He was too focused on my bruises to look me in the eyes.
“What? Are you going to kill her?” I mocked, but he did not smile back at me as he usually did, his angry expression was unbreakable.
“No, but I could make her life a living hell in a second” he said without hesitation. I didn’t need a avenger right now, but someone by my side helping me heal my wounds.
But I couldn’t tell him that.
I could never.
Not even I was sure what I was feeling.
“I don’t need it, Donovan, I can defend myself”
He rolled his eyes and let out a snort. “I can see that.”
I know it didn’t seem like I could defend myself after how the bitch left me in the hospital, but I could. It’s just that a few hours ago in the gym, I allowed myself to have a little mercy on her, which she completely squandered.
“I could have hit her if I wanted to, but I didn’t, and she took advantage of the moment to knee me”
“Do you see how she left you? I shouldn’t have let you go, I knew you were affected…”
“Are you suggesting that I started the fight?”
“Didn’t you?”
“No! She pulled my hair and threw me on the floor because I responded to one of her stupid provocations! And even though I was affected, I wasn’t going to instigate a fight with that idiot!”
“So, you mean… you were affected?” He wanted to know, he seemed genuinely intrigued.
Swallow me up, Earth
“I wasn’t affected by what you said. I like you as a friend and I like you as a friend, why are we even discussing this? It’s obvious what we are”
He was stunned for a moment, then his face turned tense. “I don’t believe you”
“What do you want me to say? “I raised my voice a bit, irritated by his insistence. What was he trying to achieve?
“What you want to tell me, Alicia.
“I got sick and needed to go to the bathroom. That’s all” I mumbled, getting nervous.
When he clenched his fists again by his side, I knew he was going to answer me and it wouldn’t be nice.
Before giving him time to do so, I let out a humorless laugh, this is getting on my nerves. “I’m not going to argue with you if that’s what you’re looking for”
I looked at his face and he relaxed a little, knowing that this conversation wouldn’t get very far if he dared to raise his voice. “I don’t want to argue, I just want you to tell me… Regarding what I said a while ago… I don’t know what I meant, I mean, I didn’t think, I just don’t want to mess up what we have and I didn’t mean to upset you, I mean, you know, Oh shit!”
Donovan punched the wall, exasperated.
“Why do you bother making a problem out of all this?” I spat, wishing he would stop.
This conversation was going nowhere and I was giving him the easy way out, but he didn’t want to give up, he didn’t understand what he wanted to win. Did he want me to confess so he could reject me? If he’s so sure that what he said affected me, what kind of answer did he want from me?
As if he was thinking very deeply about his next words, he exhaled a bit of air and then let it out. Suddenly, he inspected my face and cursed under his breath before quickly walking towards me.
My heart jumped as I felt his hand go to my left cheek and I almost died when his eyes found mine with unimaginable depth. “Because it’s not what you think, it’s…”
“Here are your things!”
The blonde entered the scene causing Donovan to quickly separate from me.
Ill-born boy…
“Who is he?” Donovan asked disdainfully, looking at us both in unison.
“Hello, I’m Cristian, but everyone calls me Cris” The blonde approached Donovan and held out his hand. “Nice to meet you, big fan.”
Donovan left Cris’s hand hanging in the air, he wasn’t going to shake it, no way.
“He brought me to the hospital” I let him know, but that didn’t relax the serious features of his face. A moment ago he had a sea of emotions, but now, he returned to his comfort zone.
“And I also prevented her from being accused of murder” Cris added, giving up on waiting for Donovan’s greeting.
The dark boy looked at me, expecting some kind of explanation from me about what Cris said. “He stopped me from killing Jessi” I clarified.
“How old are you?” Donovan asked.
“Seventeen like you guys, but I failed a year. I look younger, I know, I get told that a lot.
Donovan’s frown appeared more pronounced than ever.
I was about to tell Cris to leave so I could know what Donovan had to say to me, but no, he had other plans.
“It’s for the best” he murmured more to himself than to me. With a sad look, he fixed his eyes on me before leaving the room in a hurry.
“Where are you going?!”
Receiving no response from him, I got up from the stretcher trying to chase him. When I went out to the hallway, my aunt was sitting in one of the chairs next to the door. Passing her by, I tried to keep up with Donovan, but he was too fast and I still felt little pinches in my stomach, not as painful as before, but they were still there.
When I crossed the hospital’s main door, Donovan was already far away getting into his Chevy, he didn’t even turn around to look at me, but I knew he knew I had chased him.
He started the car and left.
He didn’t know it, but he was breaking me.
