She was judging me, the look she’s giving me right now is the same one my mother gives me every chance she gets.
“Where were you?”
The nerves are increasing. My mouth is dry and tears begin to appear in my eyes.
“At my apartment,” Nick answered, almost in a bored manner.
I lifted my head to have him in my line of sight. I was frozen and to hell with breathing. There was no need to tell her.
My heart clenches with every second of tense silence between us.
“And what were you doing there?” Olivia’s voice was shaky yet firm.
“Nothing,” I answered quickly. I noticed how Nick got upset at my response.
“I’m talking to him, not you,” she said and turned to look at Nick again. “Tell me.”
I was going to answer regardless of what she just said to me and try to fix the situation, but Nick beat me to it as always.
“First, don’t talk to her like that. Second, it’s none of your business and I don’t think you’d like it, you know, you never took it well that I wanted to be with her and even less when I kissed her eight years ago.”
I stared in shock at the boy beside me. He told her? She saw it? How… What?
“Answer me, Nick.”
He shrugged. “If you insist, we spent the whole day in bed kissing.”
Olivia pursed her lips, her nostrils seemed to breathe on their own and her face adopted a scarlet hue.
She glared at me and quickly approached me. She lifted her hand to slap me and I closed my eyes, awaiting the impact.
When the hit didn’t come, I opened them. Nick had his hand on her wrist. Apparently, he was squeezing it pretty hard because she made a face of pain.
“I won’t let you do to her, what you used to do to me.”
My stomach and soul sunk. Adrenaline began to rise throughout my body, making me want to jump on her and hit her.
She hurt Nick and now I know why.
The first time I saw her hit him when we were kids wasn’t the first nor the last opportunity she had to do so.
“You dare touch her and you’ll regret it. You’re my blood mother, but you never acted like one and now I don’t give a damn about what can happen to you. I don’t recommend messing with me or her.”
Nick’s pupils were dilated, his eyebrows were lowered and he was breathing heavily. He released her wrist as if he was disgusted just by touching her. She stepped away from him, fearing him.
“Your mother will know about this, Samantha. I’ll tell her myself. I don’t want you in my house anymore, you disgust me.”
I was furious. Not because of my mother, she would have to find out at some point, but the damned woman dares to say that I disgust her, when she was the abuser.
“I disgust you? You disgust me! You’re a damned! You used to hit your nephew! I would kill you right now if I could!”
“If I did, it was for his own good! He fantasized about you, Samantha! And you encouraged it! It’s your fault!”
Everything turned red. A wave of overprotection for Nick began to rise in my body. I approached her to kill her, or at least to do as much damage as possible. An arm took possession of my waist but I didn’t stop struggling to reach her and give her the blow she so deserves. I wanted to at least leave her with a black eye! How dare she touch him?!
I stopped fighting just when my butt hit Nick’s car door. He put his hands on my cheeks, stroking and gripping protectively. The anger began to fade with his touch.
“Can you stay here for a few minutes?” He whispered, staring straight into my eyes.
“What will you do?”
“Just please, listen to me this time and stay here,” he said irritably. He turned around and headed back to the house.
I was tempted to follow him and make sure he didn’t harm his aunt and instead do it myself. But I took a few breaths, trying to calm my heart that was pounding brutally against my chest and trying to drain all this adrenaline coursing through my body, begging to be expelled with acts of violence towards Olivia.
Once I was completely calm-which took me about five minutes-I wanted to call Eva to tell her everything that had happened and to ask if I could stay at her house until I found a job to pay for an apartment.
Too bad I was stupid enough to leave my bag at Olivia’s house.
I started to approach the house, to get my things and have Nick drive me to Eva’s house. Just as I was about to grab the doorknob, he came out with my suitcases and my bag.
He looked at me with some disapproval. “Take the keys from my pocket and open the trunk.”
I did exactly as he said and we approached the car, he put my things in the trunk and took out the keys to open the doors.
“You’re going to regret this, Nick,” I don’t know when Olivia approached us. But she was behind me, her threatening voice making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
“Go to hell, Olivia,” Nick’s voice turned hoarse. “Give the same message to my father.”
He put his hand on the small of my back, effectively pushing me into the passenger seat, slammed the door shut hard, and walked around to get into the car. He started the car and I looked through the rearview mirror at the damned woman. She was furious, I’m surprised she didn’t hit me when she was behind me.
Regardless, I know for sure that this is not the end of me and her. She’s going to make my life miserable, or at least she’ll try.
