“Hello?” Eva’s voice echoed in my ear.
“Can you come pick me up?” I asked directly.
“That fast? He’s got a small one, right?”
“I’m not in the mood for jokes.”
“I’m on my way.”
After 10 minutes, Eva was in front of the building. I quickly got into the car and buckled up, she still didn’t start the car. I turned my head in her direction and her eyes were boring into mine.
I explained everything to her, she didn’t say a word and started the car.
“He’s right, Sam,” she simply said.
“I know,” I sighed.
After a few seconds, I asked, “Can you take me home?”
“Forget it, we’re going partying tonight.”
“Sorry to say I’m not in the best mood.”
“Sorry to say I don’t care, you’re going to clear your head and drink… a lot,” she looked at me out of the corner of her eye.
We went to Eva’s house. She decided that she was going to lend me her clothes, said mine were too conservative, I didn’t deny it.
She practically forced me to wear a black dress that was way too tight. It highlighted many parts of my body that shouldn’t be highlighted. Then she did my makeup. She used too many strong and bright colors. She lined my eyes, used mascara, and painted my lips red. Then she straightened my hair and finished her masterpiece.
Technically this afternoon I was her doll, with my state of mind I didn’t want to argue with anyone, least of all her.
“Give me a few minutes and I’ll get ready, check out my work in the mirror on my closet door,” she said, then hurried into the bathroom.
I approached the mirror and was surprised to see my reflection. I’m not ugly, I know that. Many times I felt pretty, but I never felt sexy. Today I feel way too sexy and I like it.
This dress fits me perfectly, it doesn’t make me look vulgar or anything like that. It complements my hips-which are quite wide-and waist well.
The minutes for Eva turned into two hours. It was already nine o’clock at night and I was about to fall asleep in her bed.
“Okay, let’s go.”
I saw how she got ready. She’s wearing a red skirt that’s way too short and a black sleeveless blouse. Her hair is up and her makeup is like mine.
“Do I look okay?” she asked, unsure.
“You look perfect, let’s go,” I took my purse and we headed to the car.
“Whose party is it exactly?”
“Some guy from our class. Everyone knew about it, it’s strange that you didn’t.”
“I’m not as sociable as you, besides I never cared much about those things.”
“You sure are boring.”
I frowned. She laughed and stuck out her tongue.
The song “Centuries” by Fall Out Boy came on the radio and we started singing it off-key.
Then we sang all the songs that came after it, which were many. I’m surprised the dogs didn’t howl as we went along.
Music, apart from ours, began to be heard in the distance, we knew it was the house where the party was.
It was like Olivia’s, even bigger. There were a lot of guys outside and the music was very loud. There were plastic cups scattered all over the lawn.
We both got out of the car and went inside the house. Almost everyone there was a stranger to me, I had never seen them in my life, except for a few people from my class, I knew who they were by their faces, but no idea of their names.
“Do you want to dance, beautiful?” A guy whispered in my ear as he took me by the waist. I swiftly removed his hands and turned to see him. He’s a guy from my class.
“No thanks, I’m here with my friend,” He looked in the direction where Eva was, and shook his head.
“I don’t think she knows that,” I turned around to see what he was referring to. Eva was flirting with a guy. I’ve never seen him but he’s handsome.
I turned my gaze back to the guy and he was smiling.
“Do you want to dance now?” I shook my head. “Okay, you’re missing out,” he said, then left.
I grabbed Eva by the arm. “Hey, don’t leave me alone, I don’t know anyone here.”
“Okay, sorry.”
She asked the guy for his number and he gladly gave it to her. He looked me up and down and winked at me. I looked away and waited for Eva to finish.
“Are we going to drown our sorrows and dance?” Eva’s words came out with more enthusiasm than they should have.
“Let’s go.”
After two beers and a daiquiri, we were drunk enough to not be aware of anything we were doing.
We started laughing at anything, then we went to the dance floor to move a bit, I had never dared to dance in front of people, but this time I didn’t care.
I was moving my body in the middle of a crowd of people doing the same and noticed a group of people who were watching something further back.
I turned around to look for Eva and see what they were doing there. She was dancing with the same guy she gave her number to. I decided not to bother her and go to the crowd of people without her.
Normally I wouldn’t care what they were doing, but I’m not coherent enough to remember that, or am I? I don’t know.
I had to push a couple of people but I managed to see the circle of people playing cards at a table. Half of them scantily clad.
Among them was the person I least wanted to see today.
Some idiot pushed me forward causing me to fall and draw the attention of everyone at the table.
“Do we have another player?” A guy extended his hand and helped me up.
He was cute, but not handsome. He gave me a half-drunk smile. I was about to refuse and run away from there but someone interrupted me.
“She doesn’t play,” Nick answered for me. For the first time in a while, I looked at him closely. He had a cigarette in his hand and in the other five cards.
Who is he to tell me what I can or cannot do? Being drunk doesn’t help much with my irrational anger towards him.
