I hadn’t slept all night, so I looked frightening. I was applying makeup to somewhat disguise my deathly appearance when Eva called me.
She offered to drive me to the university, and I didn’t hesitate to accept.
Once I finished my makeup, I got dressed. I put on a floral dress and some sneakers. I tied my hair up in a ponytail and grabbed my backpack.
When I got downstairs, Nick was sitting on the sofa. I went straight to the kitchen to make some coffee, but when I turned around to get the sugar, he was sitting on the countertop.
“So, you never told me why you and your boyfriend broke up,” he said, lying down on the counter as I stayed in my place. “You said that if I told you why I left your room that day, you’d tell me what happened with your boyfriend.”
I took a long sigh and grabbed the sugar that was next to him. “The day you played the prank making me out to be a whore cheating on her boyfriend, you ruined my relationship.”
“So, he broke up with you?” He asked, sitting back up.
“Yes, but I was going to break up with him anyway.”
“Why?”
“Because I wasn’t going to hide from my boyfriend that I kissed you and that something happened between us, I simply couldn’t live with the guilt.”
“But he was never going to find out about that.”
“Relationships are not based on lies, and now I know that what I felt for Martin wasn’t love. I care about him, but it’s not the kind of love I feel for you…” Thank God, Eva’s car honked before I could embarrass myself further.
I started walking quickly to the door, but he grabbed my arm.
“And what kind of love do you feel for me?” He slowly moved his face closer to mine.
“One that I’m sure will end up destroying me, so for the sake of both of us, stop bothering me.” I broke free from his grip and continued walking to the door.
“Who are you going with?!” He yelled after me.
“With Eva!” I yelled back.
I managed to get into her car without any problems. Nick didn’t stop me.
“You practically ran here, did something happen?” Eva asked as she started the car.
“As I told you yesterday, Nick. That’s what’s happening.” Yesterday I told her that Nick is making my life very difficult.
“So, how long have you two been together?” I slowly turned to look at her. How does she know…?
“W… what are you… what are you talking about?” I stuttered. My cheeks were burning, and I was considering jumping out of this moving car.
“Last night, when you told me how much his actions bother you and stuff, it took me a while but I started to connect the dots. How he acted when we were in the principal’s office, also when he came to sit with us before your professor came to talk to you yesterday and I also heard his conversation. You thought I didn’t because I was laughing like a maniac but I heard everything,” she gave me a look and then burst out laughing. “You should see your face right now, relax I won’t tell anyone, but somehow or other this will come out. I’m open-minded, but most people don’t see things like I do, Samantha. They judge people, and they will say a lot of things about you that aren’t true, so you have to be sure, if you really love Nick continue with this but if not, I don’t think it’s worth ruining your life at university over a simple two-month crush.”
I was stunned. I didn’t know how to respond to all that, I know what I feel for Nick is not a two-month crush… Or is it? I don’t even know my own feelings anymore. But anyway, what do I have to think about? He and I are never going to be together. Decided. Very decided, right? Oh my God, sometimes I want to hit myself and tell me to stop being so stupid.
“We’re not together,” I asserted. She abruptly stopped the car. Several cars behind us started honking.
“I hate lies. If you’re going to lie to me you better get out of the car. I like you, Samantha. A lot, but I don’t want you to take me for a fool,” she looked at me very seriously.
There’s no point in hiding the truth. “You’re not a fool and at no point did I think you were. I’m not lying when I tell you that he and I are not together, we’re not. Even though a couple of things happened… I think I’m in love with him, but he just wants fun with women, without commitment, and I don’t want to be one of his sluts. There were kisses. Also, there was…”
“Sex?” She interrupted. I shook my head many times.
“No… there were several…” I started to point to the specific place where Nick had touched me last night. I couldn’t say it.
“Oh… I see,” she said, winking at me.
A short, bald man tapped on the window several times, I forgot we were in the middle of the street.
Eva rolled her eyes and opened the window.
“Can you get moving, girl? People have to go to work and you’re in the way.”
“I’m going, I’m going,” she responded grudgingly. The car started moving again, and Eva’s mouth did too.
“So, you kissed and he touched you,” I nodded without looking at her. “Well, I think until he takes you to bed he won’t stop.”
“He already did that,” I reminded her.
“You know what I mean. Until you let him have sex with you, he won’t stop. He’s that kind of guy, I think. He wants to have all the girls falling for him, and you’re forbidden, which makes you a challenge for him and even better. I think once he takes you he’ll think he’s the best. He’ll say he’s so good at getting girls that he even slept with his own sister.”
The words fuck and sister in the same sentence made me shudder. What she said made sense, but I don’t think he’s such a bastard to do something like that.
Since I didn’t answer her, she fell silent. She parked in the parking lot and we both stayed in the car.
