Unexpectedly, Callie was caught off guard by Jaquan’s words: “I advise you to figure out whether he’s doing it for profit or for you. Don’t be trapped.”
So this was what he meant.
Seeing Callie’s troubled expression, Cora felt satisfied and turned to leave the conservatory.
Meanwhile, Nelson, who was in a meeting, seemed somewhat distracted. Several executives had caught a glimpse of a figure earlier and exchanged knowing smiles. They all had a hunch that this must be Mrs. Oconnor.
They had heard that Nelson publicly announced his marriage at the celebration banquet last night, which piqued their curiosity about what kind of woman she might be.
From the brief glance they had, she seemed quite decent.
As the meeting concluded, Nelson stood up and escorted the group out. Passing by the conservatory, he saw Callie sitting on a swing, her head bowed as if reading a book, but her gaze was distant. She propped her head with one hand, lost in thought. The late autumn sunlight bathed her in a warm glow, highlighting her calm and pleasing appearance.
He wondered what she was thinking about.
Unconsciously, the man smiled. Callie felt his gaze and looked up to see him watching her from outside.
Nelson waved at her, signaling her to come out.
Callie hesitated, moving slowly. Seeing that he made no other gestures, she reluctantly walked out.
He took her hand at the right moment, his eyes gentle as he smiled and said, “Let me introduce you all to my wife, Callie.”
The words “my wife” felt endlessly satisfying to say.
The executives were taken aback by the girl’s poised demeanor. Standing next to Nelson, she exuded a grace that far surpassed any superficial beauty.
Who would have thought that the head of Oconnor Group was a romantic?
They greeted her, “Mrs. Oconnor.”
Callie hadn’t expected Nelson to introduce her to the business world. What did this mean?
But since he introduced her publicly, she couldn’t afford to appear weak.
Following Nelson’s lead, Callie shook hands with them politely and greeted them warmly with a composed smile.
Not wanting to overstay their welcome, one of them complimented Callie as they left, “To marry Mr. Oconnor, you must be extraordinary. We thought we wouldn’t have the chance to meet you, but seeing you today, your elegance is truly remarkable.”
Callie smiled politely but without warmth, “Thank you.”
After seeing them off, Nelson gestured for her to follow him into his office and asked, “I just heard that Regan caused you trouble at the banquet yesterday.”
No wonder she seemed off yesterday.
Callie followed him inside, “Mr. Oconnor’s news travels rather slowly.”
As the automatic door opened, Regan was sitting in the lounge. She stood up immediately upon seeing them enter. “Nelson!” She stopped abruptly when she saw Callie, gritting her teeth.
Callie waved at her provocatively. “Hello again, Miss Padilla.”
“You!”
“Regan!” Nelson commanded sternly. “Apologize.”
Regan’s eyes widened. “Why should I apologize to her?”
“Have you forgotten what you did yesterday?” Nelson’s hands were in his pockets, his face calm but authoritative.
“But she provoked me first.”
“And how did she provoke you?”
Regan couldn’t answer. She sniffled and walked up to Nelson with tears streaming down her face. “But Nelson, how could you do this? You got married without any warning; we weren’t prepared at all.”
