Callie touched her hair.
The man suddenly moved in front of her, leaning close to her ear with a faint smile. “Now you know how embarrassing it is.”
Grandfather gave Nelson a heavy slap and glared at him fiercely. “Get out!”
Callie was drinking water when she heard this and couldn’t help but laugh. Hot water splashed on her lips, burning her, and she covered her mouth.
This earned her a warning glance from the man.
The hot water soothed her, and as her body sank into relaxation, all miscellaneous thoughts disappeared. Her mind went blank, only vaguely recalling Nelson walking towards her earlier, the warmth of his palm, his protective words, and his concerned gaze…
She took a deep breath of the steamy air and closed her dry eyes.
That natural sense of security now surrounded her.
She didn’t expect to see Nelson waiting when she came out wrapped in a towel. He frowned and gestured silently. “Come here, let me trim it for you.”
He held a small pair of scissors.
Callie walked slowly. Seeing the man’s face darken slightly, she reconsidered and decided against it. After all, accepting help has always been a weakness!
Sitting in front of him, in a half-embrace position, warmth rose.
When he said he would cut her hair, he really meant just cutting her hair. There were no inappropriate remarks or sarcasm.
Callie felt uneasy, a bit restless, wanting to speak but hesitating.
He cupped her ears tightly and spoke in a low voice. “Don’t move!”
She froze. After what felt like an eternity, she finally found her voice. “Thank you for today. I’ll compensate for the losses.”
As soon as she finished speaking, she heard a lazy chuckle. “Compensate?”
“Ask Cora tomorrow about the losses of the two cars.”
“But you don’t have any money left anyway, so it probably doesn’t matter.”
Callie was speechless.
This man deliberately targeted her weak spot. She looked up. “I’ll pay.”
Nelson cupped her face again. “Stop pretending. Can you honestly say you can afford it now? I crashed the car. Your husband stood up for you but you ignored it and even argued with me over the losses. Isn’t that hypocritical?”
Callie was rendered speechless by his bluntness.
Wait, did he say… husband?
Callie let him handle her for a long time. Just as the redness on her face faded, she felt warmth on her back as he gently embraced her.
The sky gradually darkened, and no lights were turned on in the room. Neither could see the other clearly.
Callie’s voice was dry, her gaze unfocused. “Hey, we’re still arguing.”
“Why did you come to me when things went wrong today?”
In this position, Callie’s back arched slightly. She couldn’t find the words and asked herself the same question. Why him?
Because it was his car?
No-
His embrace tightened.
Today, seeing Callie standing alone in the world made his heart ache with a deep sorrow.
Reflecting on his behavior towards her in recent days, he began to feel he had been excessive.
“Because at that moment, you were the only person I could think of.”
Hearing this, the man behind her let out a cold snort. “Not Jaquan?”
He was still hung up on Jaquan. Callie was exasperated and spoke seriously. “I’ve already told you, there’s nothing between Jaquan and me. I have no feelings for him. Did he tell you he likes me?”
Nelson’s eyes were calm. “He has told me more than once that he wants you to be his assistant.”
Callie laughed angrily. “You know his intentions, so why would you think he likes me?”
