“But what’s the use? You have feelings for him too, but you got nothing out of it.”
These words pierced straight into Cora’s heart. She looked doubtful and thought for a moment, “Really?”
Callie was too lazy to answer. She took the water cup from Cora’s hand and turned to leave.
“Callie!” Cora suddenly called out from behind, “What about him? Has he developed feelings for you?”
Nelson’s recent behavior had already set off alarm bells for her.
Callie pressed her lips together and remained silent for several seconds before saying, “I don’t know.”
She didn’t know how a domineering queen would tear apart a villain. She only knew that such a warning was enough. Cora had deep feelings for Nelson. Even if it was just to continue working by his side, she wouldn’t act rashly or harm herself.
For now, her life was safe.
Nelson had a meeting in the afternoon. When he came back, he didn’t see Callie. He frowned and walked into the lounge, only to find her asleep on the sofa, probably because she had stayed up too late the previous night.
Feeling a pang of sympathy, he took a thin blanket and covered her with it. Unexpectedly, she was a light sleeper and woke up as soon as he moved. She opened her mouth, feeling a bit thirsty, “You’re back?”
Nelson looked down, “Why not sleep in the bed?”
Callie felt a bit embarrassed, “I said I would accompany you at work, but ended up sleeping here. It doesn’t seem right.”
He sneered, “At least you have some self-awareness.” He took out a bottle of mineral water, unscrewed the cap, and handed it to her.
Callie took it, surprised, “How did you know I was thirsty?”
“Your lips are a bit dry,” he said casually. She responded with an “oh” and then stuck out her pink tongue to lick her lips. For a moment, a surge of restlessness came over him. He frowned and looked away.
After drinking enough water, Callie smiled and asked, “When do we get off work and go home?”
Nelson laughed lazily, “You’re like an elementary school student, only attending class to wait for recess.”
She laughed too, “I really was like that in school. I was always the first to rush out of the classroom when the bell rang. No one could beat me.”
Nelson’s smile gradually froze. When Maeve was still around, she was much like Callie. She struggled with her studies and always needed someone to push her, constantly thinking about playing.
He asked instinctively, “How were your grades?”
“Top of my class every year, no question about it,” Callie proudly gave a thumbs-up, feeling very accomplished.
Nelson tugged at his lips, hiding a trace of disappointment in his heart. He stood up, “Hang in there for another two hours until we get off work.”
“Nelson!” Callie suddenly called out to him. He turned his head at her words, only to see her suddenly pounce on him, holding his face and planting a light kiss on his lips before quickly pulling away. “I’ll wait for you.”
Nelson’s breath tightened. Although it was just a gentle kiss, the shock in his heart was overwhelming.
He wiped his lips with his fingertip and smiled in astonishment, “You have some nerve.”
She felt triumphant, pleased with her successful prank.
In the following days, Callie didn’t go to Oconnor Group with Nelson anymore. Firstly, it was too ostentatious; secondly, accompanying him at work was really boring-more boring than building models.
But no matter how busy Nelson was, he still came home every night to sleep with her. His arm always cradled her head, giving her a sense of security. Callie couldn’t help but think that if one day this warmth disappeared, she would be very sad.
Just thinking about that day coming made the current happiness suddenly vanish, leaving only endless emptiness.
Only then did she understand that extreme wisdom brings sorrow; this is what it meant.
