Callie bounced along behind him, full of energy.
Nelson was handling official business in the car. Bored, she took selfies with her phone and accidentally captured him in the frame. The picture turned out surprisingly harmonious, so she saved it privately.
She followed Nelson to the top floor. The people in the secretary’s office found it strange, so she quickly explained, “I’m here to report on work, just reporting on work.”
That made sense, and no one thought much of it except for Cora. She knew both their identities and felt a pang of sadness. Did he have to bring her even to work?
Taking a deep breath, she looked at the woman playing with her phone in the reception area and walked over to Nelson. “Mr. Oconnor.”
“Speak.”
Cora hesitated, unsure.
Nelson quickly understood, glancing at Callie with soft eyes. “If I can hear it, she can hear it too.”
“But Mr. Oconnor… this really isn’t proper.”
Cora used to think that in the entire Oconnor Group, only she and Nelson had common topics to discuss, even if it was just work-related matters and business secrets. Now, there was suddenly another woman sharing these…
Sensing the awkward atmosphere, Callie snapped back to reality. “Maybe I should step out…”
Nelson’s expression darkened, forcing Cora to relent. She took a deep breath and said solemnly, “No need.”
“Mr. Oconnor, we investigated overnight and found that Mr. Russell has been suspected of accepting bribes over the years. His salary isn’t high, but his travel and living arrangements are all top-notch. Holding a key position in Oconnor Group, he couldn’t resist the temptation.”
“How much did he take?” Nelson pressed his temples.
“Roughly estimated, around thirty million dollars.”
He sneered. “Thirty million, Jaquan sure is generous.”
Callie listened intently and interjected at this point. “Jaquan probably didn’t participate directly. That day at the hospital, Mr. Russell said he had only met him once.” It must have been his subordinates who did it on his orders.
Hearing this, both Nelson and Cora turned to look at her.
He raised an eyebrow. “You remember so clearly. Are you defending him?”
“What are you talking about? I’m just stating facts to avoid misleading you,” Callie replied confidently, unafraid.
Cora hadn’t expected that Callie had connections with Jaquan too. Truly impressive.
Nelson withdrew his gaze and asked, “Is he connected to the car accident?”
Cora froze, biting her lip. “… Yes, we found out he’s in a relationship with Skye, and she’s pregnant.”
“Organize the evidence.” Nelson’s face darkened completely. “Send it all to his wife.”
“… Understood.”
Cora paused before continuing, “The plan for acquiring Vankey is being re-prepared. Should we recheck everyone’s backgrounds?”
“No need. This is Jaquan’s last card; he has no backup plan.”
“How do you know?”
“Because right now, he’s in London, overwhelmed,” Nelson spoke calmly, a sharp glint in his eyes. Assassins preferred killing in autumn because the wind was strong and the blood dried quickly.
After reporting her work, Cora took a deep breath as she passed by Callie. Both pawns had fallen into her hands; it was truly frustrating.
“Miss Marsh, would you like something to drink?”
Callie noticed the stubbornness on her face. As a fellow woman, she naturally understood what it meant. She smirked slightly, “Thank you, Miss Weber. Water will be fine.”
Cora didn’t respond and turned to leave.
Callie tapped her leg with her fingers, recalling their few encounters. It seemed Cora didn’t like her very much.
