“I can handle it!”
A tear fell onto Nelson’s hand, burning hot, as if it had seared into his heart.
He felt a bit irritated, his brows furrowed.
Callie couldn’t quite explain why she felt this way. It wasn’t just about this incident; it was also his indifferent attitude towards her all day, which made her feel stifled.
She turned her head. “You’re right, I shouldn’t have hoped for more. I’ve already received your favor and shouldn’t aim for anything higher. Don’t worry, I won’t leave with Jaquan.”
Nelson forced her to face him, speaking each word deliberately. “You drank with him, from the same glass?”
“Yes.” At that moment, all her grievances burst forth, and Callie decided to let it all out.
He gave a cold, indifferent laugh, placing the cigarette between his lips. The flame highlighted his sharp features, making her a bit fearful. A cloud of smoke was blown into her face, obscuring her vision. Then, Nelson released her, tossed the cigarette into the trash, and walked to the bar. He easily retrieved something from underneath it, then moved to the edge of the sofa and the bathroom door, repeating the same action.
Callie didn’t understand, only watching as he threw what he had in his hand to the ground and crushed it underfoot before locking the lounge door.
She felt a bit scared of this Nelson and took a step back. “What are you trying to do? This is Jaquan’s place.”
“So what?” He loosened his tie. “Jaquan is so paranoid that he even installs listening devices in his own lounge. No one understands his suspicious nature better than I do. What I’m about to do can’t be overheard by him.”
Callie took a deep breath, supporting herself on the table. The night breeze lifted her skirt, revealing her pale ankles.
Nelson’s breathing grew heavier for a moment before he sneered. “Your appearance today ruined my plans.”
Callie shook her head. “I ran into Skye at the hospital. She was with Mr. Russell from HR. She’s pregnant. If Jaquan hadn’t shown up suddenly, I wouldn’t have been able to get away so easily.”
If she had known what would happen later, she would have dealt with Mr. Russell no matter what.
Nelson frowned, unaware of this situation. “Couldn’t you have told me first?”
“How could I tell you? Jaquan was right next to me, and my phone was out of credit; I couldn’t send any messages.” Callie quickly explained.
Nelson sat down and lit another cigarette to calm his anger.
Seeing his expression change, Callie bit her lip. “What happened?”
“He betrayed us.”
It took her a moment to understand what he meant. “… Isn’t he just an HR manager?”
“Two of the talents he recruited were involved in this acquisition case. This afternoon, they ran off with core information.”
Nelson was indeed a strikingly handsome man, sitting there quietly, filled with gloom and anger. Such heavy sins made one want to fall into despair.
It seemed that some things had become clear to him now. Callie slowly realized what Jaquan meant when he asked for her help.
And at the racetrack, what he meant by his words-Can Nelson trust anyone from Oconnor Group?
So that’s how it was; he was using her to buy time.
She felt a pang of guilt. The Vankey acquisition was crucial. She thought defeating the Blair family was a sure victory but didn’t expect other complications.
She walked step by step to the sofa and sat down. “I’m sorry, I had no idea. I only knew that he and Skye were teaming up against me; I never thought it would go this far.”
