Even the horse trainer couldn’t help but shout, “Mr. Oconnor! Stop!”
Callie gaped, staring at Nelson, who had already deviated from the set track.
Jaquan, on the other hand, slowed down and asked casually, “Worried?”
Callie’s back stiffened. “… No.”
He tightened his grip on her hand and chuckled, “You know, body language is very honest. Unfortunately for you, we’re very close right now. I can tell exactly what you’re thinking.”
He was too aggressive, and Callie could barely stand it. “I’m just nervous.”
“Then let’s stop.” Jaquan didn’t care about winning or losing the race and began to ride leisurely. “Don’t worry, Nelson has been training horses for years. He won’t get hurt.”
But accidents happen. Callie swallowed hard, subconsciously thinking of numerous news stories about people getting injured falling off horses. Nelson had completely disappeared from sight. What should she do?
“Jaquan, is this necessary?” Callie couldn’t hold back and was even a bit angry. “You know you can’t beat Nelson with me on the horse, yet you still wanted to race him. You even provoked him earlier. What if something really happens?”
Jaquan laughed at her words. “What are you saying? Do you think I did it on purpose? I have no reason to do that.”
Because of Marilyn! Callie gritted her teeth, feeling a surge of frustration.
“Let me down.”
“Don’t move.” He leaned in, staring at her face before brushing off some dust with his thumb.
For a moment, Callie forgot to breathe as his captivating eyes drew her in. “I really like your teardrop mole. It’s beautiful.”
Callie snapped back to reality and elbowed him hard. “I want to get down!”
Jaquan didn’t stop her this time. The horse trainer immediately came forward, unfastened her restraints, and helped her dismount.
Back on solid ground, Callie finally felt relieved. She looked around. “Where’s Mr. Oconnor? He hasn’t returned yet. Have you found him?”
As soon as she finished speaking, a neigh sounded from a distance. At the edge of her vision, Nelson was riding back quickly, without any sign of panic, heading straight for Callie.
He’s okay, thank goodness!
She smiled, but her admiration turned to confusion as Nelson’s cold face showed no emotion and he seemed not to want to avoid her. His target was clear-her.
Callie took a step back, her pupils dilating in shock.
Just as the horse was about to reach her, Jaquan dismounted and ran over, grabbing Callie’s waist and rolling them both to the side with a grunt of pain.
Nelson changed direction just in time and looked at the two people lying closely together on the ground.
Jaquan had cushioned her fall with his body.
Callie coughed, still shaken, as the man beneath her brushed her bangs aside. “Are you okay?”
She shook her head and quickly stood up. “… Thank you.”
Propping himself up on an elbow, Jaquan laughed and said, “Nelson, you’re still the same-no pity for beauty.”
Nelson dismounted and handed his horse to the trainer. “Its leg is injured. Take it for treatment.”
“Yes.”
Seeing that Nelson remained silent, Jaquan turned to Callie and said, “See? Your boss is unreliable. If you want someone who can protect you completely, I suggest you choose me.”
