As she turned around, the other party seemed to notice her as well. He shoved Skye into the car and walked towards Callie, his footsteps sounding ominous.
She closed her eyes, thinking that if things got worse, she would just run for it. Just as the person was about to reach her, a pair of large hands covered her mouth. She opened her eyes wide and saw a figure appear from the other side.
Gradually, she recognized him-it was Jaquan!
He was dressed in a suit, seemingly there on business. His expression was cold when he wasn’t smiling. He gave her a signal and pulled her behind him.
Then, he strode out and confronted the person, looking quite innocent.
“Mr. Russell?”
The middle-aged man called Mr. Russell suddenly relaxed his wary expression. After a moment of confusion, he quickly recognized Jaquan. “Mr. Scott? What are you doing here?” He hurriedly extended his hand.
Jaquan toyed with his car keys and shook hands nonchalantly. “Came for a medical check-up. I didn’t recognize you at first but thought you looked familiar. Turns out we do know each other.”
Mr. Russell laughed even more exaggeratedly, no longer on guard. “It’s my mistake. I didn’t expect to see you here. We’ve only met once, so it’s an honor to be remembered.”
Jaquan glanced at the Mercedes behind Mr. Russell. “Mr. Russell seems to be doing well.” He smirked. “Looks like Oconnor Group treats its employees well.”
Mr. Russell became somewhat embarrassed. “It’s alright.”
“What brings you to the hospital?”
“… Accompanying a relative for a check-up.”
Jaquan nodded politely, not wanting to chat further. He took a step back. “I’ll be going then.”
“Alright, alright.”
Mr. Russell nodded and bowed obsequiously, watching Jaquan’s back as he left, even standing on tiptoe to make sure he hadn’t seen wrong.
It shouldn’t be possible for someone like Jaquan to cover for that person. Maybe he really did make a mistake.
As Mr. Russell’s Mercedes left the parking lot, Callie immediately breathed a sigh of relief. She hadn’t expected Jaquan to appear there, let alone come to her rescue. She gestured anxiously, “That man is the HR manager of Oconnor Group!”
Jaquan leaned lazily against the car door. “I know that.”
Callie stammered, unable to explain the complexities to him-like why Mr. Russell was with Skye. Were they together? But Oconnor Group prohibited office romances, especially with someone like Skye who had such a bad record. If they were together, did Mr. Russell have anything to do with her car accident?
These were crucial questions.
Callie wished the person in front of her was Nelson.
“Miss Marsh, it’s said that business should be conducted with integrity. I helped you today; shouldn’t you thank me?” Jaquan nodded, full of amusement.
“Thank you.” Callie snapped back to reality. “But Mr. Scott, I have more important things to do. Let’s talk another day.”
She was about to run off when he grabbed her arm. “Take my car.”
Callie forced a smile.
Jaquan was flamboyant and liked driving sports cars. The blue Maserati attracted a lot of attention on the street. She felt uneasy in the passenger seat, thinking of Nelson who seemed to prefer being low-key, always driving a Porsche for business and only using sports cars for personal matters.
He drove fast and quickly caught up with Mr. Russell’s Mercedes, surprising Callie. “Mr. Scott, how did you know they would take this route?”
Jaquan turned the steering wheel without directly answering, “Can you call me Jaquan?”
