Callie instinctively resisted his excessive concern, “… It’s not that, it’s my own problem. There’s been some malicious competition at work.”
Tobias didn’t believe her, his eyes filled with pity. “Callie, I’ve told you, you don’t have to pretend to be strong. You have me behind you.”
His words crossed a line. Callie glanced at Bianca, who looked suspicious, and quickly said, “Tobias, I know you see me as a sister, but I’m actually doing fine. Don’t worry.”
Tobias got her hint and sobered up a bit, shaking his head. “Don’t let something like this happen again to make me worry, okay?”
“Of course,” Callie smiled.
On the way back, Bianca helped her down the elevator and tentatively asked, “Callie, that doctor just now, is he related to you?”
Callie had thought of an answer and replied quickly, “No, Bianca. He’s my father’s attending doctor. He’s kind-hearted and knows I’m having a hard time, so he takes extra care of me. If it weren’t for him, my father might have passed away long ago.”
Bianca seemed half-understanding. “He sees you as a sister?”
“… Yes, what else could it be?” Callie felt guilty saying this.
“That’s good then. Callie, Nelson will handle everything for you. And if things get really bad, Grandpa will protect you. Nelson’s status doesn’t allow for any mistakes from his partner.” Bianca didn’t ask further but spoke in a veiled manner. “The two most important people in the Oconnor family both like you.”
Callie pressed her lips together and nodded, not daring to say that she and Nelson were only married in a business arrangement and that he didn’t really like her.
As the elevator reached the lobby, Bianca suddenly slapped her leg. “Oh no, I left the thermos in the ward. I need to go back and get it.”
So Callie found a seat in the lobby.
Hospitals are probably the busiest places in the world; they’re always crowded with people, each face filled with anxiety.
In front of her was the gynecology department. The corridor was packed with people; some young women were crying while others with big bellies were smiling.
Callie was lost in thought when suddenly a familiar figure appeared inside, holding a paper and limping out.
Skye!
Callie’s expression changed. She squinted her eyes to make sure she wasn’t mistaken.
Why was Skye here? She still had injuries and should be in surgery. Was she pregnant?
The more she thought about it, the more it didn’t make sense. Callie instinctively got up and followed through the crowd. Skye didn’t notice her and walked straight to the underground parking lot, moving slowly due to her injuries.
Those bodyguards hadn’t gone easy on her; it should have taken her at least half a month to get out of bed. Yet here she was, not only up but also coming alone for a gynecological check-up.
So she probably didn’t drive herself; someone came to pick her up. But Callie hadn’t heard of her having a boyfriend.
As Callie followed, she texted Bianca saying she was leaving first to go to Oconnor Group to find Nelson.
Bianca replied: Be very careful.
Callie kept her eyes on Skye as she wound through the parking lot and finally reached a Mercedes. A man immediately got out of the car, opened the door, and helped her in.
The parking lot was dimly lit, making it hard to see the man’s face clearly, but his silhouette seemed familiar… Callie couldn’t recall where she’d seen him before. Just as she was about to take a closer look, he suddenly looked over warily. She quickly turned away and hid, her heart pounding.
She had seen that face just now…
