Chapter 125: Heart Failure

Callie felt a sense of satisfaction seeing Skye’s face turn red with anger.
“I won’t care about you! You’re the main designer; the responsibility is on your shoulders, not mine.” Skye, like a defeated rooster, stormed back to her office in high heels.
Once she was gone, Callie let out a mocking laugh.
But time was indeed running out. She had to work overtime to finish the design drawings. Drawing on the bus was inefficient; she had tried several times but kept feeling like someone was following her. Every time she turned around, there was no one.
Was it Joaquin? But he was already under Bridger’s control.
Callie began to suspect she was becoming neurotic from overworking, so she decided to hitch a ride with Nelson for the next few days.
Luckily, he worked late every night, and no one at the company would see them.
In the car, Callie held her laptop and smiled, chatting with the driver. “Jeffery, sorry for the trouble.”
Jeffery glanced at the rearview mirror, seeing the man’s grim face and dared not speak. “Madam, it’s no trouble at all…”
Callie ignored him and opened her laptop to the modeling page.
Nelson rubbed his temples, disapproving of her behavior. “Cramming at the last minute, what good design can you produce?”
Callie didn’t look up. “Mr. Oconnor, it’s not the field you’re expert in, so it’s best not to comment.”
Nelson squinted his eyes, too lazy to argue with her.
In the night, the Porsche sped through the neon lights. Inside the car, it was silent except for the synchronized sound of their typing on keyboards as Nelson handled emails.
Suddenly, a piercing ringtone broke the silence.
Callie took out her phone and saw it was Tobias. She quickly answered, “Tobias?”
Nelson stopped typing.
Tobias’s voice was loud and anxious. “Callie! Get to the hospital right away. Your father has heart failure and suddenly stopped breathing. He’s being resuscitated!”
Callie’s hands began to tremble, and her throat tightened. “I’m coming right now!”
She hung up the phone, snapped her laptop shut, and looked at Nelson beside her. He decisively said, “Change course to the hospital!”
Callie clenched her hands and swallowed hard, feeling like she was in a wilderness.
“My dad has been sick for years and never had this happen before. Is he…”
Nelson’s steady voice calmed her panic. “No, it’s normal for a bedridden person to have heart failure. It’s good if they can save him.”
Callie met his gaze. “But what if… they can’t save him…”
“Callie,” Nelson interrupted firmly, then softened his tone. “They will.”
As soon as the car stopped at the hospital entrance, Callie got out and ran inside. Nelson followed quickly, slamming the car door and striding with urgency behind her.
Worried, Callie sprinted almost like a hundred-meter dash, bumping into several people along the way. She numbly apologized until she reached outside the emergency room.
It was empty outside except for nurses hurrying with equipment. Callie grabbed one of them. “Nurse, how is my father?”
“He’s still being resuscitated.”
Nelson arrived and pulled her close to him, addressing the nurse. “Sorry, please go ahead.”
Callie lost her composure and collapsed into his arms. His voice came from above her head. “Calm down; he’ll be fine.”
But the red-lit words “In Emergency” above the operating room door sent chills through her heart.
