The cold touch seeped through her fingers. Skye shivered under Cora’s sharp gaze. She was smart enough to understand. “Step down?”
Cora chuckled lightly. “Just kidding. But I’ve been with Oconnor Group for so many years, and I still think you’re the most capable in the design department. So don’t belittle yourself.”
Skye absorbed the flattery but remained worried. “But there’s always been talk about Callie and Mr. Oconnor having a special relationship. If I overstep…”
“Skye!” Cora’s face darkened, her voice stern. “I am the one by Mr. Oconnor’s side. Don’t bring up such baseless rumors; it tarnishes Mr. Oconnor’s reputation.”
Skye quickly agreed. “Please, Cora, guide me.”
Cora looked into the distance where a luxury car was parked at the company entrance. “Skye, is that car here for you? I’ve often seen you getting into it these days.”
Skye glanced nervously at Cora’s expression. “Yes, it’s my boyfriend.”
Cora kept her smile. “It’s good to be in a relationship, as long as it’s not an office romance. Oconnor Group has always supported that.”
The comment made Skye shiver again, too scared to respond.
“Why not introduce me? Would that be difficult?”
Skye took a deep breath, her palms sweaty. “That… that might not be convenient.”
Outside, the person in the car grew impatient and rolled down the window, but quickly rolled it back up upon seeing Cora.
Skye panicked completely. Even she could see it clearly, let alone Cora. She exclaimed, “Cora!”
Cora’s face showed a triumphant expression. “So it’s Mr. Russell. As far as I know, his monthly salary is only a dozen of thousand dollars. To afford such an expensive car, he must have some family wealth.”
Skye was drenched in sweat.
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. But Skye, if Callie’s design passes the review, your position will be at risk. I’m thinking of you, do you understand?”
Skye could hardly breathe. “I… I understand.”
Cora was satisfied and even more pleased to see Skye’s shaky steps as she left the company.
She took a sip of coffee, the bitterness spreading in her mouth. Her brow furrowed; after all these years, she still couldn’t get used to Nelson’s preference for Americanos.
Last night, she had forgotten a document at the office and rushed back to get it, only to see that bitch Callie clinging to Nelson. Although he seemed annoyed, he patiently talked to her about Vankey and Jaquan.
This was treatment Cora had never received!
And they were so close…
Although Callie was the one initiating, Nelson never pushed her away.
Thinking of that scene, Cora’s hatred grew boundless. She wished she could kill Callie and drink her blood!
A week passed.
Callie worked around the clock at the company to perfect the design for the Splendor Estate project. Several times she had to scrap and redo her designs because she wasn’t satisfied. Finally, she had a plan she was happy with, just in time for the final review.
Skye leaned on Callie’s desk. “If you can’t deliver, just resign out of shame. Don’t push yourself.”
Callie took her hands off the keyboard and leaned back to confront her. “If I remember correctly, we’re on the same team. If I can’t deliver, wouldn’t you have to resign out of shame too?”
Skye glared at her. “If I had been the lead designer from the start, it wouldn’t have come to this.”
“Too bad you’re not.”
“You!”
“So I advise you, instead of watching me fail, think about how to help me pass the review. This is a big project; the top executives will be watching.”
