It was at this moment that Callie realized she never cared about the bonus. What she truly valued was the sense of accomplishment after she had put so much into her work.
Cora’s voice faintly reached her ears. “Mr. Oconnor, the board members are waiting for you.”
Callie looked up, peering through the crowd to the man at the head of the room. He buttoned his suit, glanced at her, and furrowed his brows slightly, a hint of irritation in his eyes.
“Let’s go.”
“What? Skye really said that?” Litzy exclaimed within the design department, not bothering to keep her voice down. “Who does she think she is, blatantly stealing credit? She’s shameless!”
Callie tugged on Litzy’s arm. “Let it go. At this point, getting the money is good enough.”
“How can you let it go? Your hard work went to waste again. Do you really want to be a nobody in the design department forever? You have a much brighter future!” Litzy said indignantly.
“What else can I do? Go to Mr. Oconnor and argue my case? He’s too busy to bother with these minor issues.” Callie retorted, laying her head on the desk and closing her eyes. “I’m going to take a nap. Don’t talk about it anymore.”
“…”
When Callie closed her eyes, Nelson’s inscrutable face came to mind. He accompanied her on this project, and yet he said nothing, tacitly allowing Skye’s actions.
For a moment, she realized her discomfort was actually due to his attitude.
“The risk of acquiring Vankey is too high. It requires half of Oconnor Group’s capital flow. Nelson, it’s too risky,” said the middle-aged man before him, smoking cigarette after cigarette as he made his closing arguments.
Nelson picked up his cup, tasting the tea with the tip of his tongue. It was bitter; he didn’t like it.
“Great-uncle, you’re old enough. You should be enjoying life at home. Who encouraged you to get involved in this matter? Tell me, and I’ll handle it.”
The old man pounded his cane on the floor. “No one encouraged me. As a member of the Oconnor family, it’s my duty to advise for the betterment of the Oconnor Group. You’re making everyone take a risk!”
Nelson set down the teacup with a clang. “Without my taking the risk, the Oconnor Group wouldn’t be where it is today!”
The seasoned old man was momentarily speechless, overwhelmed by Nelson’s presence.
“Great-uncle, some matters are best left alone. Spend more time with Grandpa; he’s sick and needs company.” Nelson left these words behind as he stood up. “Cora, see him out!”
“Nelson! Nelson!” Great-uncle Oconnor raised his hand to stop Cora. “I’m telling you, I firmly oppose your acquisition of Vankey. Don’t forget, I still have shares. I could unite with other shareholders to impeach you if necessary!”
Nelson smiled, a hint of moisture on his lips. “You can certainly try that.”
The old man stormed out, refusing any assistance.
Cora returned, looking worried. “Mr. Oconnor, acquiring Vankey is indeed risky. Not to mention Jaquan is eyeing us, and Vankey’s debts are a significant issue.”
Nelson glanced at her, a sharp look in his eyes. “You’ve been asking too many questions lately. I don’t like it.”
Cora immediately lowered her head, falling silent.
Nelson grabbed the suit jacket hanging on his chair and strode out of the office, not allowing anyone to follow. The VIP elevator stopped on the twenty-seventh floor. When he walked closer, he noticed that the desk was already empty, and he frowned.
An employee passed by and jumped in surprise when he saw him. “Mr. Oconnor?”
“Where’s Callie? She’s from your department.”
The person was Litzy, who stammered nervously, trying to cover. “Ca…Callie received a call from the hospital. There seems to be a family emergency, so she left early.”
His look was complex.
