Chapter 73 Substitute

It was Bianca who went upstairs to look for Callie. At the beginning, she didn’t find Callie in the master bedroom then she got into the study. As she got in, it startled her that Callie stood still with great grievance as if her heart was completely broken.
Bianca gingerly asked with rapid heartbeats, “Callie, something came up to Nelson, so he has left. I will ask a chauffeur to drive you back.”
Callie closed her eyes and self-questioned that she thought too highly of herself.
She thought that he could let down his guard and show his tenderness and patience to her; he could save her every time when she was in danger, which would prove that she, for him, was different.
But unfortunately, she needed to face the fact that she was wrong.
Nelson, such an omniscient man, could go through all the troubles. Every movement of him was so of leisure and dignity that others could never catch up with him.
It didn’t make sense that Callie would not be obsessed with this kind of man. Actually, she was almost overwhelmed.
However, Nelson seemed like a totally different person. The beautiful qualities of him, such as restraint, calmness, were vanished; there only left fury in his eyes which sanguinary.
It suddenly broke her illusion that his help, for himself, was a piece a cake. She was only a grass root and was never able to stand next to him.
“Callie?” Bianca called her worriedly.
Callie gave a wry smile and said, “I got it. Let me tidy up myself. I will be quick.”
Before leaving the old house, Old Oconnor seemingly wanted to say something but hesitated. Finally, he patted on Callie’s hand and said, “Kid, I feel sorry to you. But no worries, everything will be better in the future. Nelson got some personal matters. Just give him some time.”
Callie had come round to the idea that she wouldn’t have a future with Nelson, and she smiled brightly, “Grandpa, I’m fine. I quite understand him.”
The old man gave a sign.
“May I know the name of the girl?”
She didn’t ask more so Old Oconnor had to answer, “Her name is Maeve who grew up with Nelson. She was a good kid, same as you.”
“…”
She should be a good girl if she can win praise from Old Oconnor.
In the car, Callie recalled the appearance of the little girl in the photo while Old Oconnor was cagey about her. Maeve… she should be the missing child Nelson mentioned, the girl who meant a lot to him.
It turned out that they were childhood sweethearts. But why was she missing and why did she look like Callie that much?
It was raining outside, lapping against the window. The sky was dusky in the evening; a storm was brewing up.
Callie leaned her head against the window. She could not figure out why Nelson chose to marry her. Thinking about his care and these days and his gentleness he showed her from time to time, Callie felt confused. Was it all because of her similar face as the girl?
Callie smiled self-mockingly. Without this face, there was no way that Nelson should give her special treatment, let alone her run-of-the-mill ability and plain appearance.
The fury and disgust he showed is his real attitude to her.
She was only a substitute for Maeve.
When Callie arrived Paucaster Villa Complex, Nancy helped her take off the coat which was wet with rain then asked, “May I know where Mr. Oconnor is? Didn’t he come back with you?”
Callie turned to take a look at the garage but didn’t find Nelson’s car.
“He’s not home?”
“No.”
It was raining more heavily.
In the lounge on the top floor, it was completely in deep blackness since the curtain was drawn. Outsides, wind and thunder keep growling. Nelson sat on the couch quietly. The dark silhouette of his face was clear, but his expression was vague.
