Callie rushed to the hospital, drawing quite a few stares along the way.
“Dr. Tobias!” She pushed through the crowd and grabbed Tobias’ arm. “What happened?”
Tobias raised an eyebrow and gestured to her face. “Your makeup…”
Callie looked embarrassed. “Sorry, I didn’t have time to remove it. Where is she?”
“The security just sent her out. Don’t worry, I didn’t refund the medical fees to her.”
Callie finally breathed a sigh of relief and patted her chest. “Thank goodness. Thank you so much.”
“My stepmother… She’s a bit money-crazy. I’m really sorry for the trouble she caused in the hospital.”
“Don’t apologize just yet. Even though I’m not your father’s attending physician anymore, I know your family’s situation well. You don’t need to feel embarrassed.”
Tobias gently patted her shoulder.
Callie slumped into a chair in the hallway, feeling grateful. “Dr. Tobias, I don’t know what I’d do without you. Your words always give me strength, unlike some people…”
Tobias continued to smile warmly at her, seeing her genuine charm despite the ghost makeup.
“Alright, do you want to see your stepmother?”
Callie tiredly stood up and noticed Tobias following her.
“Dr. Tobias, aren’t you on duty?”
“I handed over my shift to a colleague before you arrived. No rush.”
Callie didn’t fully understand but felt even more grateful. Having a man accompany her gave her a sense of security.
In the security room, Yamilet was being scolded loudly. “Do you think this hospital is your home? You can’t just do whatever you want!”
Yamilet looked up and saw Callie and Tobias approaching. She immediately shouted, “Callie!”
“Officer, that’s my daughter! Let me out!”
The security guard looked over at the oddly made-up woman. “You’re her daughter?”
“Stepdaughter,” Callie corrected coldly.
“Stepdaughter or not, I’ve raised you for years, you ungrateful wretch! You said you had no money for your brother’s wedding, but you have 200, 000 dollars to keep that dying man alive! You heartless girl! I should’ve let you starve to death years ago!”
Callie stared coldly at the ranting woman.
Reuben had told her that his marriage with Yamilet was an arranged one and they didn’t love each other. But why could Yamilet be so heartless towards the man whom she been living with for so many years? Yamilet wanted to watch her own husband die just to get money for her son’s wedding. How incredulous.
“Enough!” Callie shouted. “Let me tell you the truth. That 200, 000 dollars wasn’t mine. I won’t give you even a cent, only my life if you want it.”
Yamilet went crazy, wanting to scratch Callie’s face. “If it’s not your money, whose is it? Oh, the doctor beside you looks familiar. Did you marry him to save that old man by climbing into his bed?”
Slap!
Yamilet’s head snapped to the side from the impact. She clutched her cheek, looking in disbelief at the doctor standing protectively in front of Callie.
Callie was also taken aback. She knew Tobias to be gentle and had never seen him hit anyone before.
“Dr. Tobias…”
“How dare you hit me!”
“That slap was on Callie’s behalf. She wouldn’t hit you, but I will. Go ahead, or call the police. See if they charge you with spreading malicious rumors!”
Yamilet’s eyes widened. She was speechless.
Callie felt a surge of satisfaction and added, “Do you want to stay here, or go to the police station? Your choice.”
