Callie really couldn’t afford to lose this job!
Nelson stood with his arms crossed, his demeanor as icy as ever. “I remember giving you a document when you moved in, clearly stating that I don’t eat sweets. Do you realize how much trouble you could cause me if you made such a mistake in public?”
Callie hung her head, forgetting for a moment that only Old Oconnor knew about their marriage.
At that moment, their relationship felt strictly professional.
“Mr. Oconnor, about that document, I…”
“Focus more on your work,” Nelson cut her off, walking past her and heading upstairs, the strong scent of alcohol trailing behind him.
Callie sat on the couch, feeling defeated. Even her favorite sweets had lost their appeal.
Understanding him was supposed to be part of her job too.
Ungrateful jerk! How could anyone not like sweets?
Life was already so bitter. People should enjoy something sweet…
“Fine, if you won’t eat it, I will,” Callie muttered, grabbing the cake and enjoying it. The sweetness spread through her mouth, but the frustration in her heart remained.
Why was Nelson so harsh? She had just made a few jokes at work. No one knew he was her husband!
Yesterday at Old Oconnor’s mansion, he wasn’t like this at all.
Nelson stood on the second-floor hallway, watching the petite woman curled up on the couch, her cheeks moving as she chewed.
She seemed to get tired of eating and, feeling aggrieved, sat there for a long time without moving.
Nelson frowned deeply, feeling a pang of strange emotion he couldn’t quite name.
He hadn’t intended to be harsh. He was just disappointed.
If Callie had put in more effort over the years, the position of design director would be hers now.
She wouldn’t need him to step in.
Sensing his gaze, Callie looked around, her lips still smeared with cream.
Nelson stepped back into the shadows.
She didn’t see anyone, thinking it was her imagination. She got up, cleaned everything up, and washed her face, feeling a bit better.
The next day, it was the weekend, and Callie got up early to head to her part-time job in the city, playing an NPC in a haunted house for 200 bucks a day.
She had missed last week because of Nelson. Just as she finished her ghost makeup, her phone rang.
It was the hospital. Callie’s heart raced as she answered, “Hello, Dr. Tobias? Is something wrong with my dad?”
The background noise was loud, like a busy marketplace.
After a moment of silence, Tobias spoke, “Callie, you should come to the hospital.”
Yamilet had gone to the hospital.
Unable to find Callie for days, Yamilet guessed Callie would visit Reuben on the weekend, so she waited there. Upon arrival, Yamilet discovered that not only had the hospital stopped asking for payment, but Reuben had also been moved to a VIP room!
A nurse calmly explained, “Your daughter has done well. She paid a 200, 000 dollar medical fee in advance.”
Yamilet got furious.
Callie had money and hadn’t given it to her!
Quickly, Yamilet began harassing the nurse, demanding the refunded medical fees for her own use and claiming she had an urgent need for the money.
“If you don’t give me the money, I’ll sit here and not leave!”
Her tantrum drew a crowd.
Tobias, hearing the commotion from his office, came out to find Yamilet lying on the ground, causing a scene.
