“You really went all out, I have to say that you outdid yourself,” Cade said as they drove home. They had just successfully been able to leave the house after all the things that Ophelia had pulled with them.
“One of us has to try,” Ophelia said absent-mindedly looking out the window. The conversation between Charles and the both of them kept on replaying in her head. How was she to get out of this situation or was she to go back on her word all of a sudden?
“Are you okay? Is this about what my grandfather said?” he asked noticing her mood.
“Yeah,” she said in a weary voice.
“You do not have to take what he said to heart,” Cade said as they entered into the estate gate. “We can go back after a moment and tell them a sob story that we tried and it was not working”
“Do you think my mind has not wandered that far?” she asked turning to him. “Do you know that there are so many medical advancements that can allow one to conceive a child out of the body”
“Do you think making a child in a test tube is wrong?” he asked. He was asking to hear her opinion and not because he was thinking of doing it.
“If I have to give birth to a baby then I must do it myself why do it with a test tube?” she asked him but she was not expecting a reply. Cade pressed his lips together because he did not know what to say. He did not want to press her about it.
“I know you do not want to do it, you have already told me that you do not want to do so, so I understand” Cade said. “I am sure that one way or the other we will find a way around this”
“Are you ready to give up on being the next chairman?” she suddenly asked him.
“No, I have prepared all my life for this and I feel like it would be unfair for me to have to give it up”
“Okay then,” Ophelia said like she had been able to conclude the conversation.
“Okay then?”
“Yeah”
“What?” Cade was confused.
“I have made a decision” she said and he nodded. He knew her decision and it was because she made herself clear on their first night together.
“Do you care to share?” he asked. This was just to make sure that they were on the same page.
“Let us have a baby together”
MEANWHILE
Harper had left the Vale house a bit distraught if anybody had asked her she would have sworn on her life that Cade and Ophelia were in it together because it was an arranged marriage but seeing them all over each other was making them think otherwise. Frances had been so open to her about everything and told her that Ophelia’s father and Cade’s grandfather had been the ones to plan out a meet and then they claimed to be in love after they met.
Harper had tried to ask more questions to see if they had met before now, maybe they were in a relationship before they were introduced to each other. Frances had said that they claimed to have been in a relationship before the time and that it was love at first sight.
She could not help her mind as it wandered to what Cade had told her when he broke up with her so brutally.
“I do not believe in love and I have been wasting your time all this while because I know that if I tell you I love you, it would be easier for us to be together”
Those words broke her heart but she pushed because she believed in the love she felt him give her, she always felt seen by him and he was genuine. She believed that it was because of his family circumstances, she had been too late to come to him and make him her. She was so sure that their relationship was a sham and that she would be able to make him come to her.
She stood in line at the checkout line in the store, she had to get a few things for herself and she was running low on cash. She had thought that since she was coming to Cade he was going to be the one to take care of her but her plan did not go as planned and the money she had saved was now almost finished. She was already looking at postings for a job.
If she was looking to survive here she knew she had to get a job. She had been smug and confident about coming out here. She had even disobeyed her mom so there was no way she could call her and ask her for money, she could not go back either. She was stuck here and needed to take care of herself.
“Maybe I should have asked Cael for a job at the company?” she murmured to herself as she closed her eyes trying to think it through. “Should I call Frances and ask her? She seemed friendly enough to help me” she added.
She was jolted out of her soliloquizing by a hand touching her shoulder lightly. She jumped out of her thoughts and turned to meet Green standing there with a half smile across his face. “Harper?” he asked and she recognized him.
“I saw you from a distance and I recognized you. Do you live around?” he asked and she nodded.
“Yeah, in one of the apartments down the road” she explained.
“So do I,” he said looking down into her basket. “Can I pay for that?”
She wanted to jump at him and call him her genie but how could she accept it just because she was in need? “Oh no need to do that, I can pay for it by myself,” she said. She wanted to beat herself up for rejecting his offer when she really needed it.
“Let me pay for it. I have a favour to ask you so take this as a bribe”
“If you insist”
