Kayden glanced back at the window. Georgia furrowed her brow and said, “Don’t tell me you climbed in through the window. I won’t believe it – this is the eighth floor!”
As Kayden was about to confirm that he had indeed entered through the window, Georgia swallowed hard and cut him off, “Never mind, I don’t need to know how you got in.”
“Why are you here?” Georgia’s face darkened, her words turning cold and sharp.
Seeing Georgia’s reaction, Kayden realized how angry she was about last night’s events.
Noticing her heavy dark circles, he knew she must have been up all night.
With a pained expression, he said, “Georgia, listen. I left Sariah’s place early last night, I swear nothing happened between us. On my way back, I came across a woman who’d been raped. I stepped in to help her. But then she followed me, claiming Felipe would kill her if she was alone. She begged to come home with me. Of course, I couldn’t bring her to our place, so I took her to a hotel to rest. She was terrified to be left alone, insisting her attacker would find and kill her. I had no choice but to stay at the hotel with her. But I promise, absolutely nothing happened between us. I swear on my life!”
Kayden’s one flaw was his inability to lie, even white lies were beyond him. Having been on the battlefield since his teens, he was a man of few words, uncomfortable with social niceties.
The word he’d uttered most in his life was probably “Kill!”
Hearing Kayden’s explanation, Georgia let out a soft sob before asking, “And what does that have to do with me?”
Kayden’s heart sank, but before he could respond, Georgia pressed on. “Do you have any idea what these three years have been like for me? The strange looks I’ve endured? Every time I speak to friends or classmates, they ask if I really married an idiot. At home, I’m ostracized, mocked. Our whole family can’t hold our heads up. I didn’t marry you because I couldn’t find anyone else, Kayden. I could have any man I wanted. But I couldn’t go against my grandfather’s will, so I waited faithfully for three years. I imagined how you might surprise me once you recovered. I just hoped you wouldn’t turn out to be the type of person I despise most.”
She paused, choking back a sob. “But you’re exactly that type of person. Kayden, I’ve fulfilled my grandpa’s last wishes. I’m not asking for anything in return anymore. Let’s get a divorce.”
As she finished speaking, tears streamed down Georgia’s face.
Only she knew how much courage it took for her to utter that word – divorce.
Though her voice had grown quieter, Kayden heard her clearly.
Her word sent a violent tremor through Kayden’s heart. Divorce! Georgia was actually asking for a divorce!
This woman had endured so much pain for him; how could he possibly divorce her?
No! Kayden would not divorce Georgia. He was determined to make her the envy of others, to show all those who had mocked her that she hadn’t married an idiot, but someone far greater than they could imagine.
“I promised to make you the happiest woman in the world,” Kayden declared solemnly. “I won’t break that promise. You may not understand me now, but one day you’ll see that every word I’ve said to you is true.”
Just as Georgia was about to respond, there was a knock at the door.
Georgia wiped away her tears and called out, “Who is it? Come in!”
The door opened to reveal a man in a security guard uniform. Upon seeing Georgia, he stammered, “M-Ms. Adams, someone just flew up the building from the ground floor! He seemed to disappear into your office. Are you alright?”
Georgia’s brow furrowed. “I’m fine. You must be seeing things. This is the eighth floor, after all.”
The guard replied, “I’m just glad you’re safe! I was worried about you.”
“Alright, you can go now,” Georgia replied expressionlessly.
After leaving the office, the guard scratched his head, muttering to himself, “Must’ve been my imagination. Maybe it’s because I stayed up late watching adult videos last night?”
Georgia turned back to Kayden, her gaze icy cold.
She spoke deliberately, enunciating each word, “That’s enough. You should leave now. I don’t have time to deal with you right now.”
Kayden realized he had no idea how to win someone’s heart. He was used to people following his orders without question. The idea of having to tread carefully and treat someone with special care, as with Georgia, was entirely new to him.
“Ms. Adams!” Before Kayden could leave, another knock came at the door, accompanied by a woman’s voice.
“Come in!” Georgia called out.
A woman in a white office lady outfit entered – it was Georgia’s secretary Lara. She looked anxious as she reported, “Ms. Adams, we have a problem. It seems our computer systems have been hacked. The entire company network has crashed.”
“What?” The news hit Georgia like a bombshell.
A system breach – was someone trying to hack into the company’s network and steal all their data?
Such incidents weren’t uncommon in the business world, but Georgia never imagined it would happen to her.
“You should come and check it, please!” Lara urged nervously.
Georgia immediately stood up and headed for the door.
Seeing this, Kayden naturally followed Georgia and Lara.
As they stepped out, the entire office was in chaos. With the system down, all the machines had stopped working.
Soon, they arrived at the system control room. Just outside in the lobby, Georgia spotted two familiar faces.
Jamie and Old Mrs. Adams had somehow arrived at the company.
Upon seeing Georgia, Jamie put on an exasperated act. “Georgia, what have you done? Grandma was in a good mood today and wanted to see how you were managing the company. But as soon as we arrive, the entire system has collapsed!”
As he spoke, Jamie wore a smug expression.
Old Mrs. Adams looked displeased as well, leaning on her cane. She thumped it on the ground to express her dissatisfaction. Originally, she hadn’t planned to visit the company, but Jamie had been praising Georgia’s management so much that she decided to see for herself.
Who would have thought they’d arrive to find such a crisis?
