“Miss. Isabelle, you’re awake already” the doctor exclaimed in surprise. “That was fast, I was actually expecting you to wake up the next morning”
“Well, now I am. Thanks, doctor, I appreciate your care” Isabelle said, a sincere smile curved on her face.
The doctor smiled back and replied, “No need to thank me, it’s my job. I quickly rushed here when I got an alert from the intercom. I was in the middle of something, that’s why I arrived late. Please, pardon me”
“It’s alright, doctor. You’re here now” Isabelle remarked with a soft expression on her face.
The doctor walked further into the room and asked, “Do you feel any pain, like a headache or dried throat?”
“Yes, I do” Isabelle readily replied.
Meanwhile, a certain someone in the room who was ignored like a fleeting air, was gritting his teeth with jealousy written all over his face. He had been watching the doctor converse freely with his fiancee and was slowly losing his patience. The smile on their faces was the last straw as his last string of patience got snapped.
“Doctor Charles, don’t you think it’s best if you do your job with immediate effect?” He asked, his voice eerie and his gaze carrying an unknown meaning in them. “You’ve chatted with my fiancee enough”
“Haha…” The doctor laughed nervously, feeling awkward after realizing his mistake. He didn’t know the cold-hearted CEO could be so jealous. “You’re right, sir. I’ll just examine her and leave”
Charles walked towards the drip stand, his back cold from the piercing gaze behind him. He couldn’t help but praise himself for being able to walk under such circumstances.
Liam’s voice suddenly jolted him out of his thoughts. “Don’t touch her carelessly. She mustn’t feel any pain”
“She won’t” Charles replied with a forced smile in between his gritted teeth. Deep down, he felt like smashing something on his torturer’s face, but that was only his imagination. He wouldn’t dare mess with a business lord.
All this while, Isabelle could tell what the problem was, her heart filled with joy knowing how possessive Liam was of her. But she also thought that his treatment towards the innocent doctor was unfair so she placed her hands on his, her gaze telling him to take it easy.
After some minutes, the doctor was done with the check-up and briskly walked away from Isabelle’s side to avoid any more misunderstanding.
“She’s fine. She just needs a little rest and she should try to exercise more to clear off the drowsiness she might feel for some days” Charles explained in detail to them.
“Thanks, doctor” Isabelle uttered again to the man who had again forgotten his place. For a man, he was really someone who couldn’t keep quiet about something.
“Well, your survival is partly because the driver was drunk and wasn’t aiming straight. If not the damage would have been worse” he revealed, oblivious to the grim expression on Liam’s face but he still wasn’t done talking yet. “I just hope those criminals rot in jail”
“What criminals?” Isabelle asked, her mind thrown into confusion. She turned her gaze to Liam,” what is he talking about?”
The doctor, sensing the tension in the atmosphere, felt like slapping himself in the face to showcase his busybody nature. He quickly excused himself and scurried out of the room, leaving the two couples to calm the storm he had brewed.
Isabelle was getting impatient due to Liam’s silence. “What criminals, Liam?” She asked again, but this time with a sharp gaze on him.
Liam sighed deeply, cursing the loose-mouth doctor in his head. He knew there was no need to keep the truth from her anymore. “Your accident wasn’t an accident, it was staged”
“What???” Isabelle was thunderstruck by the bombshell. Her mind raced with thoughts of who could be after her life. She was perplexed and didn’t know how to respond.
Liam sensing her confusion, decided to explain further. “It was orchestrated by my mother and the maid, Anastasia”
“What???.. you mean those two wanted to kill me?… Why?..” Isabelle asked astonished. “I don’t think I’ve offended them in any way”
Liam was almost driven crazy by her naivety. How could she not tell that they were jealous of her?.. he decided to ignore her questions. “You don’t need to know that. What matters now is that you’re alive and kicking”
Isabelle nodded in agreement but was still not done talking about the issue. She curiously asked,” Where are they now?”
“At the police station, awaiting trial” Liam revealed with an indifferent expression on his face that left Isabelle wondering if he wasn’t bothered about his mother.
With much reluctance, she asked,” How about your mother?.. you’re not keeping locked in jail, are you… Besides, I’m quite sure that Anastasia is the mastermind behind the plan”
“She is the mastermind” Liam emphasised with a frosty tone and a raised brow. “By the way, why are you defending her?.. I never knew you both were on good terms”
Isabelle coughed nervously, realizing her mistake. “We aren’t on good terms. I’m just worried about you, she’s your mother you know” Her voice was soothing yet cautious as she held her heart in her mouth, waiting for Liam’s response.
Liam’s eyes were closed deeply in thought. He had also searched his heart for any bit of emotions he could have for her. But unfortunately, his heart was numb. His love for her vanished when she abandoned him to the ruthlessness of the conflicted world. If it was any other person, he would have given them an earful but it was his Isabelle, so he calmly responded. “You shouldn’t be worried about that. I won’t show any feeling of pity towards the woman who tried to hurt the woman I love”
“It’s alright, I understand”Isabelle nodded, patting his back. At least, she was familiar with the feeling of not being loved properly by a mother. Her mother was no different, she couldn’t even dare to think of the emotional torture she had to go through, just to please that woman.
“I’m famished” she uttered, trying to break the awkward silence in the room. “I need to eat something”
“Alright, wait for me then” Liam replied, hearing the grumbling of her stomach. He quickly stood up and walked out of the room. He didn’t want to keep her waiting.
