For long hours since Adrian had left the room, Liam had refused to leave his current position as he kept staring at Isabelle’s pale face, waiting to detect any sign of reflex movement. Anyone who saw him now might mistake him for a human figurine placed for decoration. Even the doctor who had been going back and forth just to satisfy his unnecessary demands, was drained, both physically and mentally. He had finished another round of examination on the patient and was about to leave.
“Her vitals are stable. It won’t be long before she wakes up” Doctor Charles revealed to Liam who had a stoic expression on his face. He hesitated before adding, “I believe you also will get some rest for tomorrow morning. You need to remain fresh by the time she wakes up”
“Alright, I’ll do that when she wakes up”Liam replied with a deadpanned expression on his face, his response a huge contrast to the doctor’s advice.
Charles was rendered speechless by the unusual species before him. Walking out of the room, he just sighed. The story of the sleeping beauty suddenly crossed his mind, causing him to grin widely.
Liam, after much consideration, stood slowly from his seat and straightened his legs to get rid of the numbness in them, gently removing his palm placed on Isabelle’s hands and failing to notice the slight movement of her fingers. He silently walked towards the window, his mind occupied with thoughts about the recent happenings in his life. Everything had certainly not been in his favor. His opponents had taken him for a fool. His gaze showed how frustrated he was, the more reason why he wanted to put Damien in his place, get his life back on track, and be with the woman he loved.
“I need to cover up for my shortcomings”Liam muttered silently, but his words echoed through the room. Suddenly, the whisper of a voice startled him, causing him to turn to the source of the voice.
“I’m here with you”the raspy and hoarse voice whispered before coughing slightly, a weak am on her lips.
Liam was overwhelmed, taking a heavy step slowly towards the bed. His eyes teared up as he uttered her name. “Isabelle”.
“I sincerely do not care about your shortcomings” the weak voice uttered again, pulling Liam who had gotten to her, weakly into her bosom.
“Don’t you ever scare me like that again, Isabelle”Liam scolded her with a softened voice, cupping her pale face in his hands and placing a light kiss on her forehead. The spark he had felt for a long time was starting to rekindle.
“I’m sorry, my love”Isabelle spoke, her voice filled with guilt as she stared into his eyes. Though her memories were a bit foggy, she could still recall what had happened before the accident.
“Do you need something?” Liam asked tenderly, pouring out a glass of water from the hug on the bedside table. He passed it to her, watching her gulp it down in one go, and poured her another glass before lying beside her to cuddle her.
“This bed is quite small for two people. I don’t think you’re comfortable that way” Isabelle uttered, shifting to give him a little space.
“It doesn’t matter, as long as I remain by your side” Liam dismissed, removing the strand of hair blocking her sight.
“For how long was I unconscious?” Isabelle curiously asked. “It feels like I haven’t been up for weeks now”
“It’s just two days, my love, “Liam said, his voice soothing to calm her tensed nerves down. “The doctor said you were lucky to not have been hit on your vital spots”
“Yeah, I can tell. I mean I can still feel my legs” Isabelle spoke amusingly, in a bid to lighten up the dull atmosphere. “So, what have you been up to while I was asleep?”
Liam’s gaze instantly darkened when he heard her questions. He had no intentions of telling her about the two hardened criminals and decided to keep it to himself for now. “Just occasional busy to the company, nothing much… ”
“Occasional?” Isabelle raised a brow, her eyes glittering with concern. “Isn’t that risky?.. you must have lost a lot of business deals. you need to concentrate”
“How can I focus when my woman is lying unconscious on the hospital bed?” Liam asked with a convicted expression on his face. “I couldn’t get my eyes off you”
Isabelle effortlessly ignored his cheesy words and continued with her scolding. “That’s not enough reason to miss out on work. Be careful”
“Yes, ma’am” Liam replied with a playful smirk on his lips, the turmoil previously in his heart was no placed by a blissful feeling as he pressed his nose on her bare neck, inhaling her scent. “Honestly, I thought for a moment, that I was going to lose you”
“I’m sorry, my love. I didn’t mean to scare you that way” Isabelle apologized, trying to mask the discomfort in her voice. Before she blacked out, worries about how she couldn’t settle things appropriately with Liam were constantly tugging at her heart. She didn’t want to leave this world without his forgiveness.
After a brief moment of silence, she mumbled, “My head hurts”
“I almost forgot, I should call the doctor, “Liam remarked, massaging her forehead with one hand and the other on the green intercom button by the bedside. “You’ll be fine”
“Thank you” Isabelle expressed her gratitude, obviously enjoying the soft treatment she was getting. “I’ve missed you, a lot”
“I’ve missed you too” Liam replied, hugging her tightly, his mind distant. Then he suddenly asked, “You know, I’ve been wondering about what made you leave the house. Did my mother and the maid pressurize you or what?”
“No, they didn’t” Isabelle responded, her heart thumping widely as she cautiously waited for the next question she knew would come.
“Then, why did you leave?” Liam probed further, his eyes expecting a befitting answer. “It was too early for you to leave the house”
“Erm.. I know” Isabelle replied, still trying to think of a perfect excuse. She possibly couldn’t tell him she had gone to see a friend, he wouldn’t believe her. “I just wanted some fresh air and so I wandered off”
“Wandered off?” Liam arched an eyebrow in confusion. “What were you thinking about?”
“Well, it…..” The knock on the door put a halt to their conversation as they both gave the outsider permission to come in.
