CHAPTER 117

At first, Laura did not hear the phone ring. The noises the kids were making as she got them ready for school was so deafening that she could not hear her thoughts. Her mind was on the incident that had happened between Christian and Rian only a few hours before. It was an episode in her life that she certainly did not want it to repeat anytime soon.
“Stop it,”she yelled at one of the kids who was for a reason that was known to only him, jumping on top of the bed instead of allowing her button up his school shirt.
The little boy stopped for a moment, looked at her and then continued to jump on the bed. It was very obvious to her that the only thing he wanted right now was to frustrate the hell out of her.
She sighed heavily and rubbed her forehead as she tried to calm herself down.
Kids were little devils, she thought. Whoever called them innocent little angels must not have given birth to a kid ever. Unlessx her own kids were a special breed. If that was the case, she wouldn’t be too surprised because she was sure that if other kids had been like her own, the human race would have long gone into extinction because everyone would have refused to give birth to more kids and not only that, would have discouraged others to give birth.
The kid, as if wanting to try every possible way to frustrate her, jumped even more violently on the bedsheets of the bed, accompanying the sounds of jumping with excited screams.
Laura continued to rub her forehead. She could feel a headache coming on already.
Christ, she could not believe that it was still so early in the morning and her kids had already made it their life’s purpose to frustrate her.
The other one, since she was no longer paying attention to her, had quickly moved to the dressing table and had started to play with ths perfume bottles and hair brushes that were on it.
“Guys, stop it.”She said.
None of the kids stopped what they were doing to even spare her a minute of attention. Instead, they ignored her and continued to do whatever they were doing.
That made her lose it. She stamped her feet on the floor and said, more like shouted.”Kids, I said stop it.”
Her voice was so loud that it resonated throughout the room and even went beyond it.
Gabe was breathing heavily from what she had just done. She was glad that it had done the trick though.
The kids, were looking at her in shock after they had stopped what they were doing.
She breathed in heavily.”Thank you,”she said to them as if they had fallen quiet out of their own accord.
It was in this silence that she heard the phone ring. After her sanity had been disturbed by her kids, the jarring sound of the ringtone of the phone that was on the dressing table rattled restlessly on her nerves.
Who could be calling her?
If not for the fact that the kids could hear her at the very moment, she could have sworn loudly and violently to relax her nerves.
She marched to the dressing table with only one mission- to switch off the damned phone.
When she got to her phone though, one look at the caller ID and her not being able to recognize it made her to hesitate.
She wondered if it was an emergency call considering the fact that she was being called this early in the morning even as she picked the call and replied brusquely.
“Hello?”
The voice that answered on the other end of the phone call was a male voice. It sounded so monotonous as he spoke that Laura wondered for a moment if she was talking to a robot.”Thank you for answering the call.”
She nodded and swallowed but did not say anything.
Rather, her gaze was on her little boy who was standing on the bed but was now buttoning up his shirt quietly as she made her call.
Okay, maybe, kids were not so bad, she thought coyly as she waited for the strange caller to state the reason for his call.
Finally, the caller asked.”Do you know any Mr Christian?”
That caught her attention immediately. Her brows furrowed. She had not expected that question and now, she was getting worried.
“Yes,”she said as she turned away from looking at her kid to focusing on the marble floor that she was standing on so that she could be able to concentrate on what the caller was saying.
“Well, you. have to come to the central hospital, ma’am. Christian was involved in a ghastly auto accident a while ago. He had been taken to the hospital and -”
Laura did not hear everything that was being spoken. In her shock at what she had just heard, her phone fell from her hand onto the floor.
Her world literally turned upside down and for a moment, she thought she was going to faint.
In her dazed moment, she did not know when the phone call had ended. All she could think about was Christian.
“Christian,”she said as a sob escaped her lips and quicky ran out of the bedroom. The kids followed her to the sitting room where Riley was waiting.
One look at her and Riley stood up from her sofa, instantly worried.
“What is wrong, Laura?”She asked.
“Riley,”Laura said in a panicked rush.”Take care of the kids. Take them to their school. They just called me that Christian just had an accident and is in the hospital.”
“What?”Riley exclaimed.”Oh my goodness!”Then she looked at the kids and then back at Laura who was already at the door, rushing to go out.”I will join you later at the hospital after taking the kids to school.”
Laura breathed out a sigh of relief even as she sniffled.
She said to her personal assistant, “Thank you.”
And then she rushed out of the house to the car and then to the hospital, all the while praying that Christian would be alright.
