Standing up and turning around, I saw Lily leaning against the far wall with her guitar, watching me with a small smile. I guess this our spot now huh ? She said, looking up at the sky.
I nodded, lowering myself on to the couch and sitting down. Our spot, I repeated, the words sounding right.
Lily looked down at her guitar and strummed a couple of times, looking like she was deep in thought. I didn’t say anything else, just waited for her. The wind whipped by and her hair blew around her shoulders. The city lights were bright behind her and as I just sat there and waited, it hit me that Lily truly was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. And she was all mine. After a minute or two, she looked up at me and nodded.
The last time I was here, you heard me sing a song for my father, she whispered, a hint of pain in her voice.
Anger pulsed through me as I heard her pain and I glanced at the floor, willing it to pass. Taking a breath and unballing my fists I looked up and was surprised to find that Lily was smiling at me. But this time, she said. I’m going to sing a song for somebody else.
I watched as she started strumming the guitar, her eyes closed. And as she started singing with that beautiful voice, it sent shivers down my spine. Listening to the words, I smiled as Lily finally opened her eyes and looked at me, the lyrics telling me everything, like she was baring her soul to me.
‘I hate to see you cry
Lying there in that position
There’s things you need to hear
So turn off your tears
And listen
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No it won’t all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good
You know, it’s nothing new
Bad news never had good timing
Then, circle of your friends
Will defend the silver lining
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No it won’t all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good.’
And as she sung the last line and her voice faded away in to the night, my love for her soared. I held my hand out and she put the the guitar down on the floor and walked over to me slowly, a nervous smile on her face. When she put her hand in mine, I pulled her down on to the couch next to me and wrapped my arm around her.
Everytime I hear you sing, I whispered. It makes me wonder what a girl like you, is doing with a guy like me.
She leant her head on my shoulder and looked up at me. You’re the best thing that’s happened to me, and that’s why I sung for you Noah, she smiled, taking my hand. I sing for you.
I reached over her and grabbed the blanket, spreading it over us so we were shielded from the wind. And as we both sat there on the rooftop under the stars, we watched the city bustle with life as we fell asleep.
But just before I succumbed to the tiredness, I looked over at Lily and thought how lucky I was to have found her. The last line of her song ran through my mind and I smiled, thinking how true it really was.
‘The heart of life was good.’
Lily POV :
Yawning loudly, I stretched my arms above my head and opened my eyes, the morning light making me squint slightly. The sun was shining above, and I was surprised to find myself outside for a brief moment before I realized that Noah had taken me up to the roof last night, and asked me to play for him. Reaching out trying to find him blindly, I felt nothing but air so I sat up and threw the blanket off me, wondering where he was.
Sitting up on the couch, my eyes wandered and I found him leaning on the railing, looking out over the city. His back was to me and he hadn’t realized that I was awake so I took a minute to admire him without him knowing. He had taken off his shirt as it was so hot, and his sweats were riding low on his hips. I had never seen anyone that I had wanted so badly, and I smiled when I realized that he was already mine.
Crap, I muttered, seeing my reflection in the glass from the skylight a few feet from the couch, out of the corner of my eye.
My hair was all over the place and I still looked like I was half asleep. Great, I thought to myself. There’s Noah looking like some sort of Greek God or something, and there I was, looking like I had just driven miles with my head sticking out of the car window. But just as I reached up to try and do something with my hair, Noah turned around and leant against the railing, a grin forming on his face when he saw that I was awake.
Hey gorgeous, you’re finally awake, he said happily, pushing off from the wall and starting to walk towards me.
But after a few steps, he stopped walking and paused, a thoughtful look on his face. Mentally slapping myself for not trying to tame my hair sooner, I just stared up at him. After a minute, I let out a small laugh and cocked my eyebrow at him.
What are you staring at ? I smiled, startig to feel self conscious.
You, he whispered. You look beautiful in the morning Lily.
I was taken by surprise as the words left his mouth, and I could do nothing but stare at him and wonder how this guy standing in front of me could always make me smile, when no-one else could. Thanks, I mumbled, feeling my cheeks heating up as I stared up at him.
Are you blushing ? He laughed, amusement in his eyes. Because oh I do love it when you blush Lily.
Wha I am not blushing, I stuttered, pushing off from the couch and standing up. I’m just hot up here that’s all. In case you haven’t noticed, the sun is literally beaming right down on this building.
At this angle, I was practically eye level with his bare chest, and my eyes were glued, following the hair trail that disappeared underneath the waistband of his sweats. I bit my lip as I thought about running my hands all over him, his broad shoulders and muscled arms.
Ahem, Noah cleared his throat, obviously trying to fight the laughter that was threatening to break through. I know I’m irresistable but please, you’re treating me like a piece of meat here !
I burst out laughing as I walked over, and Noah just kept his eyes on me, a small smile on his face. Something tells me you don’t really mind college boy, I smiled, running my finger up his chest when I reached him. In fact, I think you quite like it, am I right ?
Maybe, he shrugged, trying to look non-chalant.
Chuckling softly, I stepped closer and pressed my body against his, standing on my tiptoes. Very lighty, I trailed kisses down his jawline, all the way to the hollow of his throat. I felt his pulse quicken under my touch, and a low growl came from his throat.
That’s not fair, he mumbled, placing his hands on my hips tightly. You know my weakspot. I still need to search for yours.
I smiled up at him and took a deep breath, feeling slightly nervous at what I was about to say. I’m almost ready Noah, I said, closing my eyes as his mouth dropped open in surprise. I mean, I just need a little more time, but I know I’m desperate to be with you. Just give me a bit more time.
My eyes were still closed as I felt him reach up and take my chin, forcing me to look up at him. Open your eyes and look at me Lily, he whispered softly, barely audible.
Taking another deep breath, I opened my eyes and looked straight in to his. I gasped in surprise when I realized his face was a mere inch from mine, and he was smiling at me. Whenever your ready, he said. I’ll be here waiting for you.
And from the understanding look in his eyes, I knew that it was true. And anyway, Noah said suddenly, winking at me. I have my dirty dreams to hold me over.
I slapped him on the shoulder, laughing hard as he faked serious injury like his arm had just been broken. There’s the annoying guy I fell for, I chuckled, my laugh stopping as soon as the words had left my mouth.
Noah’s laugh silenced as he heard me. Oh God, I thought, What did I just say ? Spinning around quickly, I walked over to the couch and started to reach for the blanket lying to the side, anything to avoid eye contact. But before I could grab it, I felt Noah grab my arm and turn me around, forcing me to look at him.
What did you just say ? He whispered, still holding on to my arms so I coudn’t move.
I I, I stuttered, looking down at the floor, trying to think of ways to explain, or think of something else to say. I just…
Because it sounded to me, Noah said, leaning down slightly so he was at my eye level. That you just said that you’ve fallen for me.
Yeah well, maybe I did, I argued defensively, challenging him. So what ?
I stood there as Noah just stared at me, a faraway look in his eyes. Crap, I thought to myself, what have I done ? But to my surprise, a huge grin appeared on his face as he looked at me. Suddenly, he picked me up and spun me around, a cry of surprise escaping as he laughed loudly, a sound that made my happiness soar.
Noah ! I cried as he hugged me tightly, still spinning me around
Lily, he smiled, gently putting me down and placing both hands on my face. You have no idea how long I’ve waited to hear you say that !
Really ? I whispered, seriously fighting back tears of joy as I looked up in to his eyes.
Yes, he laughed, as leaned down and rested his forehead against mine. Because the truth is, I’ve fallen for you too.
