Diego’s POV
Kamara had turned red at the question. I wasn’t expecting it either, but I have no intention to pretend in front of my Nana. I wanted to tell her that there is nothing like a close relationship between us.
But knowing her, she wouldn’t hesitate to express her disappointment in me and make me end the contract. Which would never happen. I have invested too much time and energy.
“W.. we….” Kamara stuttered.
I groaned inwardly, interrupting her. “We didn’t exactly date. It was a very short fling.” I said. To my surprise, Kamara burst into a fit of cough.
“Are you okay, darling?” Nana asked looking worried.
Kamara waved her hand. “Y…yes, I am thank you.”
Nana chuckled lightly. “There is no need to feel bad about that, Kamara. I have learned that there is no rule to attraction. As long as it makes you happy.” She said in her usual way of acting cool. My ear would end up being pulled after dinner.
“I hope your parents know about your condition. I wouldn’t want them getting angry at you for nothing.” Nana continued.
“Not at all,” Kamara replied.
Both of them kept having light discussions to my annoyance. I don’t know what I was expecting when I agreed to let Kamara come for dinner. At this point, I really need to make an escape. Reaching for my phone, I texted Fernando. He replied in the affirmative.
I was super relieved when dinner came to an end and Kamara displayed exhaustion. Nana was sensitive enough to ask me to drive her home after making her promise to come around again and they exchanged contacts.
“It would be best if you ignore my Nana and not take her too seriously. I don’t want any kind of familiarity.” I said to Kamara as I drove out of the compound. Kamara turned her face to the window, not responding to me. “I guess you heard me, didn’t you?”
She hissed. “Do you have an obsession with me or what? The last time I checked you were the one who insisted on dinner. It’s not like I asked for the meeting. Now you expect me to turn her down because you are scared I might slip up the actual truth.”
“I am not scared of anyone.” I gritted.
“I thought so.” She mumbled, remaining quiet.
I gripped the steering wheel hard all through the ride to her house. Kamara is so annoying that I wish I could show her a glimpse of how cruel I can be. But she is carrying my child at the moment. Dropping her off and ensuring she got into the apartment safe. I drove to meet Fernando at our usual spot.
“Two shots,” I ordered.
“Bad day?” Fernando inquired.
“Draining night. I want to squeeze her neck so bad.”
“I will gladly charge you for assault. You act like you are an amazing person who does no wrong. Whereas on the flip side, you are a total asshole who is too obsessed with himself.”
I stared mouth agape wondering where the eulogy was coming from. “Did you have it written out or it has been in your head all day long?”
“I have memorized it since the day we became friends.” He snorted taking a sip of his drink.
I chuckled dryly. “I was almost tempted to admit the truth to Nana about how I met her,” I told him.
Fernando had an amused expression on his face. “You really do love playing with fire. Every one of us knows Nana Isabella stands on oppressing people who aren’t on the same level of finance as one. We have come this far it would be wrong of you to ruin it. ”
I scoffed. “You can’t blame a man for trying. I don’t know how long I have to pretend to have caught any interest in Kamara. I am sure she feels the same way about me.”
“You both hate each other. That is a raw fact. I am just scared the child might come out with a dark heart.”
“That would only mean he is my true son,” I said with a serious face.
“Asshole!” He cursed laughing.
Taking a long sip of my drink, I shut my eyes tightly feeling the sensation burn my throat. Truth be told I might be regretting this decision of mine to have a surrogate. Not only does the mother despise me. But I am not confident that I have the ability to take charge of fatherhood. Not having my parents grow with me, makes me feel weary when it comes to discussions of family. It is easier said than done. Until thoughts of losing one another crosses the mind.
I felt a hand tap my neck. “Why are you so carried away?” Fernando yelled in my face.
I hissed feeling the urge to knock him out. “Can’t I have my drink in silence?”
“If you wanted silence you wouldn’t have called me out for a drink.”
“Just a drinking companion not exactly a talking one.”
“Lucky for you I am not mute.” He grinned.
“Maybe I should have just gotten someone pregnant or discussed Nana’s worries. I won’t have to be subjected to this right now.”
“Is she bothering you?”
“Not at all.”
“Then see it this way. You helped her family get off the street. It’s a win-win situation. Don’t overthink it. You are probably just scared to become a father. You don’t want another monster like you being born.”
I raised my brow, glaring at him. “You are so close to being murdered and becoming fish food.”
He chortled without remorse. “I know you too well, Diego. You act all tough outside but deep within you, you want something different from the life you grew up to know. I trust that you will make an amazing father. There is no need to doubt it. How the child came to be doesn’t matter. The love he or she gets will be the only thing to keep them happy and reformed. Also, leave it to Nana to handle it.”
I chuckled massaging my temple. It’s how much he understands my plight without me having to say anything. I lifted my glass nodding.
“Cheers to life.”
