Kamara’s POV
I scoffed in distaste at the box of clothes and shoes Diego sent for me to wear to dinner. It isn’t so bad, but I would hate to give him the satisfaction of wearing it. He seems to like being in control and I detest being controlled. It drives me nuts.
Chantelle chortled behind me. “It is such a pity that he spent so much to get you this attire. If only he knows you won’t wear them.”
“He has lost his mind. You need to have seen how he spoke to me that day. I just wish there was another way out of this. Men like him shouldn’t be seen parading the streets freely.”
“You can’t talk vile about someone who saved your family. Don’t forget it’s more of a transaction here. You just have to put up with it until you put it to bed.”
I kissed my teeth at how lightly she said it. “It is so frustrating when you act logically as regards this situation. As my friend I expect you to get mad when I do and curse out anyone I complain about.”
She got up and massaged my shoulder. “You are all I care about, trust me. But if you don’t keep your anger at bay, you might do something you will hate and I don’t think that is a good thing at all.”
I sighed tiredly, feeling frustrated all over again. “It is just so surreal.”
“It will be fine. I have got you.” She beamed brightly. “So, what do you plan to wear?”
My eyes rested on the short sequin dress that I had just made. It had a fringe under that stopped just slightly above the knee. The dress is tight-fitted with just one long-sleeved hand. It feels just perfect to annoy the shit out of Diego.
Chantelle gasped clasping her mouth. “That dress is drop-dead gorgeous. He is so going to be mad that you dumped his luxury dress and Louboutin heels to wear your design.”
I rolled my eyes caressing my belly. “That exactly is the plan. I don’t have any intention of making this easy for him. So you can have it.”
“Are you joking?”
“Not at all,” I replied.
Chantelle screamed in excitement and did a 360 roll before coming back to hug me almost squeezing my juices out. She is part of the reason I don’t want to lay claim on the package even though I have wanted the brand in my collection for a long while. But I think I would rather support my growing brand than please Diego.
Also, my friend looks excited now and that is enough delight for me.
Diego sent a car over to pick me up just as he promised. I don’t know what I was expecting, but the mansion had my mouth agape in awe. It had such a large and beautiful space that I envied the child that would grow up here.
Diego is definitely rich but might be too loaded for his own good. The main door opened and he stepped out looking dapper in the navy suit he had on with a white shirt that had three buttons down.
I caught myself quickly and turned my face away before he thought I was checking him out.
I detest people like him who flaunt their handsomeness like it is so priceless. His perfume filled up my nose when he came closer. He smells really nice. Diego let out a scoff as he stood in front of me giving me a quick rundown.
“Where do you think you are going?” He asked with a cold glare.
I blinked in confusion. “To dinner of course.”
“You almost fooled me. I thought you were headed for a disco club instead. What the fuck do you think you are wearing? Did I not send you something more appropriate to wear?”
My face relaxed and I snickered. “Oh, that. Thank you for the gift my friend loves it. If you think you can toss me around like a ball to do what pleases you. You are in for a cold ride. I am not some lost puppy. I can handle myself. If this doesn’t suit your taste, I employ you to adjust it. Because I have no plans to listen to you in any way.”
He clenched his fist looking livid. I expected him to say something, instead, he just kept mute and stormed off. I walked rigidly behind him, giggling in delight at my win. This won’t be the last of me. I will make him regret messing with me.
If I thought the house on the outside was nice the inside is magnificent with the white walls and beautiful chandeliers. I have always heard of big houses feeling lonely the minute you step in. But the reverse is the case here. There is a homely feeling to this one.
Makes me wonder why Diego turned out like that. Anyone who grows up here should definitely be a better adult. I guess the theory begged to differ in his case. A beautiful old woman with a comforting aura appeared with a bright smile on her face. I can tell she is Diego’s grandmother. The striking resemblance can’t go unnoticed. She must have been a top beauty during her younger years. Beauty does run in the family.
“Oh my dear, this silly boy didn’t tell me you are this gorgeous. How are you my darling? I am Isabella.” She said smiling. I almost thought she might be trying to play nice. But her eyes told the truth. She is no doubt happy to see me.
I mirrored her expression. “Nice to meet you, ma’am. I am Kamara Hermes.”
“Please call me, Nana. Your dress is beautiful. What brand is this?” She asked
“I made it myself.” I beamed with pride.
Isabella’s eyes shone brightly as she looked between me and Diego. “That is so amazing. I love raw talents like yours. I assure you have come to the right place. I am going to patronize you and have all my friends do that too.” She giggled like a child.
“Can we just head to the table and have the food already?” The joy killer spoke up. I gave him a side eye and he pretended not to notice.
His grandmother glared at him openly. “He is always so rude. But I am sorry for making you stand for so long, Kamara. Especially in your condition. Please come sit. Everything is all set. I can’t wait to get to know you better.”
“Me too,” I replied. Her liveliness is rubbing off on me quite well.
Linking our arms, I caught a whiff of her expensive perfume. She smells like rare lavender, I can almost taste it in my mouth. “How do you cope with that grumpy man?” She asked in a whisper.
I scrunched up my nose. “He is a handful.”
“I can hear you two .” He retorted from behind.
We both rolled our eyes at the same time. Thank goodness there is one nice person around here. I would have dreaded dinner. Seeing the colorful display of food, my mouth watered and my belly rumbled greedily. Even if grim reapers were everything this house offered. I would eat to my delight and spread my arms out to be taken away after. Should be worth it.
“So how did you two meet?” Isabella dropped the bombshell and I lost my appetite just the same way it came.
