Chapter 13

Kamara’s POV
I was barely listening to anything the doctor was saying. My life seemed to be floating in a storm right in front of me and all I could do was sit and watch it consume me. I was affirmed fit for the procedure and have been scheduled to return to the hospital when next I am ovulating. For a moment I wished the tests would come out negative.
However, it appears the universe has it in for me. I practically ran out of the hospital as soon as the doctor gave the order. Standing rigidly next to the car, I held onto my bag tightly as Diego walked towards me with an unreadable expression on his face and a brown envelope in his hand. Next to him was the guy from the club. They seem close.
“Here,” Diego mumbled handing me the envelope.
“What is this?” I asked with a frown.
He looked bored. “I worry that your slow ability to catch up on things will affect my child. That right there is the contract you are to sign. Read it and sign. I don’t have much time to waste.”
“If I sign this does it mean my father’s debt has been paid?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure? You can’t go back on your words now. I won’t let you cheat me.” I stated flaring my nose.
Diego kissed his teeth impatiently. “Well, that is why my lawyer here indicated it in the contract. You will know that if you read through it. You will get your copy the minute you sign it.”
“It’s on the first page.” The lawyer said.
I glared at both of them suspiciously before reading through the first page hungrily. He had truly indicated there that the house would remain my family’s own for as long as I fulfilled my part of the contract. I didn’t bother to read through the rest before snatching the pen from the lawyer.
“Are you sure you won’t like to read through properly?” The lawyer asked.
I shrugged furrowing my brows. “The most important thing here is that my family’s home is safe. I will deal with the rest of the content later.” I mused and signed the two papers handing one over to Diego while keeping mine.
“Nice doing business with you. Don’t forget you need to let me know about your ovulation or you can forget about the house.” Diego threatened.
I snickered, “Well I am not like the people you make deals with. I keep to my words. I will see you when I see you.”
“I need your contact if that would happen. I can’t have you showing up at my doorstep like we are close.”
I rolled my eyes, snatching the phone from him. I punched in my number and turned around to leave. Just then I remembered something. “Please can you help call my father and tell him you no longer intend to take away his home?”
“Do I need to do that?” He asked with an amused look in his eyes.
I hate this young man’s guts so much. Gritting my teeth I inhaled deeply.
“Please, we had a deal. This is all I am asking.”
“You make it sound like what you are asking hasn’t drilled a hole into my account.”
“So you think my womb will remain brand new now that you are about to have it punctured?” I retorted not willing to back down.
The lawyer chortled but Diego’s glare shut him up. “I don’t do those kind of calls. My right-hand man will handle that.”
“How long will that take?”
He squinted his eyes in a bid to control his obvious anger. “Not too long.”
“I expect that before I get home they would have gotten the good news. Don’t make me call you for that.” I stated firmly and turned away to flag down a taxi.
My eyes were filled with tears as I rested my forehead against the window. I can’t believe I am letting it all go like this. A year off the grid will take a huge toll on my career. Many talented and potential designers come out every year, fresh off college is a huge chance for me to hit the rod when it’s hot. Now it’s all gone.
Inhaling deeply as the car stopped in front of the hospital. I got down and tried to look as fine as I could. Ciara rushed towards me looking very happy.
“Kamara!” She screamed, hugging me tightly.
I held her back. “What’s wrong? How is dad?”
“Dad is fine. You wouldn’t believe it, Kamara. We just received a call from the mafia that he is letting the house go.” She said.
My heart thumped faster. I know I have been firm with my request. I probably just wasn’t expecting him to do it so soon. I rushed to the room and saw my mum smiling alongside my dad.
“Is it true?” I asked.
“Yes, baby. We don’t have to end up on the street any longer. Our shop would be saved with the money we have and our lives will be back to normal in no time.” My mum said.
I fell on my knees and cried loudly. Ciara knelt next to me consoling me. “Stop crying, Kamara. It’s all over now. We are safe.” She said.
I nodded with my head still bowed. Raising it I stared at everyone, the smile on their faces made me feel assured that I did the right thing even though I might have regrets later on. I should back to this moment and see where this bumpy road leads me.
“How are you feeling now, Dad?” I asked patting his hand.
“Elated. I am so sorry for putting you all through this mess. Forgive me.” He said slowly.
“It’s okay, Dad. As long as you are fine. When is he due to be discharged?” I asked Mum.
“The doctor says he needs to be observed for the next two days. I think you should go home with your siblings and rest up. You look exhausted.” She replied.
I patted my cheeks quickly. The last thing I want is to be caught off guard. I held up a weak smile. “Ciara can go on without me. I need to see Chantelle and pick up some things from my apartment. See you later mum. Bye, Dad.” I kissed them and left the room.
Tears laced my eyes heavily as I hurried out of the hospital after waving Ciara off. I want to be by myself and let out the pain strucking at my chest before it chokes me to death.
