“Tell Adrian to upgrade the security system with a stronger antivirus”Liam ordered to Sarah whose fingers were typing away on her laptop, jotting down the necessary criteria for the new project. “I don’t want the last incident to occur again”
“I will inform him sir” Sarah replied with a solemn tone and walked out of her boss’s office. The whole company was deeply engrossed in getting the company back to its initial power before the scandal. Even Liam was no exception, he needed a breakthrough and the new project was the starting point.
Liam’s mind darted back to the event of last night. His mind was brooding on the state he had met Isabelle. She looked so vulnerable that his heart was pained but the walls around them prevented him from comforting her.
A shrilling sound from his phone jolted him from his thoughts. It was Adrian.
Liam’s expression turned somber as an ominous feeling filled his heart. He had asked Sarah to deliver a message to him, why then was he calling?…..
“Hello sir” Adrian greeted with a panicking tone in his voice. Overreacting to bad situations was a rare occurrence for Adrian.
Liam was a bit stunned by his outburst but kept calm and composed. “What is it, Adrian?”
“Sir, it’s Penelope” Adrian revealed with an austere tone. “The doctor informed me that she was found in a critical condition last night. The cause of the occurrence has not been disclosed yet”
“That’s insane” Liam was baffled as his expression darkened. “How did such happen, she’s been responding well to treatment, what could have gone wrong?”
“The doctor revealed that a dangerous substance was detected in her system. But how it got there is still unknown” Adrian explained with severity in his tone. “There seems to be something strange about this incident. I have asked the doctor to check the security cameras in the hospital”
Liam inhaled deeply as he tried to decide on the next line of action. The main plan was to sponsor her treatment till she woke up, to tell the truth about her accident and the one responsible for it. The doctor already said that her brain was conscious, she could hear voices and sounds around her. Now, she was in a critical condition. Something just wasn’t right. He decided to go to the hospital himself and find out about the real circumstances.
“Adrian, I’ll go there myself” Liam voiced out after much contemplation. “But I need you to come with me. The hospital cameras must have been tampered with, we can’t take any chances”
“Alright, boss” Adrian replied with an enthusiastic tone. “I’ll meet up at the garage”
Liam and Adrian both arrived at the hospital after getting frustrated by the traffic congestion and road safety marshals’ trust issues.
“Welcome, Mr. Callahan” the doctor greeted with a troubled expression and dark circles beneath his eyes, a result of sleepless nights. “We’ve been expecting you”
“What’s the situation?” Liam berated, ignoring the greetings of the anxious doctor. “What information do we have?”
“Nothing yet, sir” the doctor mumbled as he tried to avoid Liam’s piercing gaze. He deemed himself incompetent for letting such a thing happen in his hospital. “The security camera was tampered with, we can’t find anything”
Liam threw a meaningful glance at Adrian who stood beside him, observing the scene. It was just as he had predicted, the mastermind was quite meticulous in his actions but they couldn’t escape Adrian’s keen eyes and skills.
“Let my technician check the problem”Liam ordered to the doctor who nodded immediately. “By the way, what are the chances of the patient surviving the ordeal?”
“Well, we were able to extract the drugs out of her system. But her condition has worsened” the doctor revealed with a grave expression on his face as he adjusted his glasses. “It will take a miracle to wake her up. I suggest we transfer to a neurologist, they specialize in her type of condition and I’m quite sure her rate of survival will be increased”
Alright, Doctor. I’ll look into that” Liam uttered in agreement with the doctor’s words before a fleeting image popped up in his head. “Where is her daughter?”
“Oh! Right. She’s been crying endlessly in her grandmother’s arms regardless of the persistent consolation. She was the last person who saw the culprit’s face but she has refused to cooperate with the investigation” the doctor explained as he threw a glance at Sabrina’s spot.
Her eyes were so red and puffy from too much crying. One could guess that she had no more water to exhaust so she just stared blankly in the space.
Liam had a great dislike for little children because of his personality. He saw them as just a bunch of troublesome and ignorant little beings but he needed to approach the little girl if he needed more information.
“Hey. Sabrina right?” His cool voice brought Sabrina back to earth as her eyes brightened up at the sight of Liam. But the sudden change didn’t last for long as she became sad after searching for the person she was anticipating but didn’t find her.
Liam noticed this action and sighed in frustration. He knew at that moment, he wasn’t getting any answers from her. Then he thought of something; maybe he should ask Isabelle to come speak with the little girl. They were good friends so it should work.
Liam hesitated for a little before dialing the number on his phone screen. The phone was answered after multiple rings. She must have been wondering why he had called her.
“Hello…” Her delicate voice came through the line causing Liam to feel a tingling sensation in his chest.
“I need you to come over to the hospital where Penelope was admitted” he uttered with much reluctance. “It’s urgent”
“Oh! Okay,” Isabelle sounded disappointed. “I’ll be there in a jiffy.
Meanwhile, Adrian came back to meet his boss to deliver the latest update.
“Sir, we’ve recovered the video clip” Adrian revealed. “But there’s another problem that makes the situation more complicated”
“And that is?” Liam’s brow furrowed in suspicion. “What is the problem now?”
“A lady dressed in a nurse uniform visited Penelope after the doctor had examined her but the problem is no one knows who the lady is. She’s not a worker here at the hospital”
